2010 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

@ PipetteKid (Post #2168):

When people tell you that your resume would be stronger with MIT-Harvard than MIT-MIT, is it because you’d be going to grad school at a different institution from your undergrad, or is it because it’s… Harvard?

GCN2:
Congrats on your acceptances. I am so glad that the process is almost over  and I will have a school to attend next year. I am sure I will see you and other CC people at Cornell next week.

Congrats to all of the CC-ers who got accepted and good luck with the upcoming interviews.

It’s better to get away from your undergrad for graduate school, if only to make new connections. Science is a lot about networking, and presumably you already know a decent number of faculty at your undergrad pretty well. You also definitely don’t want to continue in the same lab for your graduate degree-- it’s a good time to try something new. It’s also pretty boring to be required to take the same classes again.

I cannot believe it…I got an invite from Dartmouth MCB this morning. I thought they were done sending invites. What a pleasant surprise!

I just got the acceptance email from U Penn, I hope the rest of you are hearing good news too. It’ll be great to meet you all in NYC next week!

re whether Harvard-Mit makes for a stronger resume than MIT-MIT: what makes a strong resume is what you’ve done, so pick a place where you think you can best do it.

To the person asking about UChicago’s post interview acceptance rates. I’m an undergrad there and my professor told me 75%. Hope that helps.

Accepted to MIT! I’m not sure I can breathe I’m so excited :-)

Did anybody interview at Duke for the DSCB program yet? I went on a separate weekend and wanted to see how everybody else felt about the program…

Thanks to all for the replies!

I just had a day of open house with Harvard BBS, and I DEFINITELY saw enough happy, well-balanced, non-competitive students and faculty to convince me that rumors are quite skewed when it comes to this place. In fact, once I got past that, I found that my thinking really cleared.

Honestly, pre-clinical/translational research excites me more than anything else, and even though I’ve never tried it, there’s a lot more opportunity to try it at Harvard Med than at MIT. If I find that it’s not for me, there’s dozens (hundreds?) of faculty doing basic research on almost any topic I could want. So I almost think I should go for what I love right now, especially with their enrichment program for translational research. At MIT, they’re really big on staying open-minded, because you might love ____ research and not know it, but…I feel like there’s room for me to pursue _____ research at Harvard if translational doesn’t work out; I can’t really explore translational so much at MIT.

Oh, and I found out I got into MIT today. There’s so much more emotional complexity stemming from my love for my home institution, but I think I should weigh the research options pretty heavily, no?

AHHHH brain explodes Sorry for the rambling.
:X

Pipettekid:

I absolutely love the BBS program and agree with whatever you wrote. You have over a thousand faculties to choose from for rotations haha…thats absolutely incredible. I actually brought up that “competitive blah blah…” rumors at the faculty dinner today and I was very convinced with their answers about where the rumors come from. And we got to have dinner with amazing people in science (Matthew Meselson for example from Meselson-Stahl experiment we studied for DNA replication models)

PM me who were you among those recruits  I am sure I am going to see you tomorrow :)

has anyone that interviewed at the University of Chicago (Micro dept) heard back yet?

Just keep in mind that having so many faculty in a program is not necessarily, by itself, a good thing – you still have to choose 2-4 to rotate with, and only one whose lab you will join!

I won’t make it out to the dessert event tonight – husband’s sport is on the Olympics tonight – but I will definitely be there with my collaborator during the next BBS recruitment weekend.

Hey guys,

First post here. I interviewed at Berkeley MCB this past weekend and got my acceptance on Thursday! Quick turnaround… I loved the program and will probably be there in the fall.

Have Scripps, Princeton, Cornell Weill, and Rockefeller stopped sending out invites? I haven’t heard a word from them. Do they just silently reject you?

No big deal though… I’m going to CALI!!!

I got my acceptance to Columbia pharmacology program! I went for an interview there last week. Yaaaayyyyyy ~~~!! I am going to have some tough decision to make.

Princeton neuro is done for sure, I’m not sure about MolBio, but probably close to done if not done.

Suffering from HMS BBS recruitment withdrawal already. So awesome! :(

Anybody else fall in love with MIT?

So who else is coming out to Princeton Molecular Bio Interviews next weekend? I guess I’ll see you there. Hopefully there is no crazy snow storm. ;-)

Has anyone interviewing for Yale neuro gotten a list of their interviewers yet? I haven’t heard from them since setting up travel info a month ago.

Does anyone know about the post-interview acceptance rate at Wash U in St. louis?
