2010 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

Congrats Cooper. You seem to be getting better luck than I am with these immuno programs.

historically (and i mean last year), stanford doesn’t invite until january

@ SAPI3NS:

I don’t think Stanford Biosciences has gotten back to anyone yet. I think I am going to ask the Berkeley folk what their preferred course of action is, but I assume that it will be to hold off making flight plans until you either have interviews from the other Bay Area schools or know that you aren’t going to get them.

@TCelldude I would just relax…from what I can tell you got this Yale invite before alot of other applicants…which means they really want you…so stop whining about your “only invite”

and this goes out to all the applicants…its not even Christmas yet. I would not be freaking out just yet…they are sending out invites to their favorites first…and then to the good but not favorites. And who cares if you are a favorite or not…as long as you get the invite…so you may be getting an invite in the next two weeks…

For now…all you people in the NE…sip some hot cocoa and enjoy the holidays with your snow. To everyone else, best of luck, relax, and get off this forum…it is not good for your sanity or for the sanity of your loved ones.

Stanford doesn’t begin reviewing applications until January.

At earliest, late December.

I called a school today and asked them if they allowed for any alternate interviews (because I already have interviews booked on both of their dates), and the lady said absolutely not (and was very rude about it, too! If I didn’t know from you guys that this was okay to ask, I would have been horrified at myself for daring to ask).

Does anyone know if MIT, Caltech, and Harvard MCB allow for alternate interviews if you can’t make it?

I wish everyone would just announce their dates so that scheduling would be easier!

Also…would love people’s opinions on how many interviews they would need to have to feel reasonably secure that they will likely be going to grad school next year.

Anyone have any idea on GSK interview to acceptance ratio?

First interview invitation from Columbia (Genetics and Development)!!! finally!
by email. submitted Dec 6.

Sorry if this is a really specific question, but does anyone have any idea of what percentage are accepted from those interviewing with the Harvard Program in Neuroscience?

@TcellDude

Thanks! And I’m pretty sure that an invite from Yale means that you’ll have plenty more luck coming your way. ^_~

WashU Neuroscience interview request by phone

WashU DBBS MCB invite by phone

file completed on dec 1, international student

MIT and Harvard MCB both have two recruitment weekends (and both usually are back-to-back for convenience). I don’t recall if Caltech had two weekends or not.

This would be my advice. There’s no need to buy plane tickets at this point – you’ll know when and where you’re going in plenty of time.

I seem to recall that I had one of Berkeley/Stanford pay for my ticket, with the understanding that they would contact the other school to ask for half the price or something.

I have interviews for the neuroscience programs at:
WashU
U Iowa
Michigan–Ann Arbor
Wisconsin–Madison

Has anyone heard from neuro at:
Northwestern
Stanford (sounds like not til Jan)
U Penn
Yale
UCSD
?

Thanks!

@ ceclarlinetlo
Thanks, I guess I’ll just have to be patient…
A person from Duke Grad School replied my e-mail today, asking exactly for that (patience), since they have like 7,500 apps to go over…

Well, congratulations to all of you who have interviews, and for those, like me  that got nothing so far, best luck ever ;)

Dang. I applied at UW Madison, and no invite yet. Here’s keeping my fingers crossed nonetheless!

I’m just getting a bit freaked out. Berkeley said the interviews are on a first come first served basis and that spacs are limited. What do they mean? Did they send more interview invites than they can pay for? Is it a race now to see who gets the spots for an interview? What should I do???

@SAPI3NS- you should sign up for the second weekend, and then just wait to make travel plans until you hear from all of the california schools. My year Berkeley released interview decisions relatively late-- I already had interview invites for UCSF and Stanford (which were both weekends surrounding berkeley that year), and I was trying to figure out what to do for 3 days in the bay area when berkeley called. The first come first served refers to which weekend you get to go to-- most people prefer the second weekend since a good portion of people also apply to UCSF and Stanford, and would like to minimize flights.

No, they can accomodate 55 per visit, and the amount of invitees numbers about 100, so as ec1234 mentioned, “first come, first serve” refers to whether you are within the first 55 when you request a first choice. Obviously, 55x2 is enough for all interviewees to attend if they are all flexible with the second choice if they cannot reserve their first choice in time.

The bottom line is, if there is the possibility of getting any other Bay Area interview, you’ll want to take the second visit time slot. That’s the first thing I did the second I got their e-mail.
