2010 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

Hi, guys. This is my first post in CC.

First of all, I hope all the best for you guys. I’m not a PhD candidate for the Fall 2010. Right now, I’m considering PhD programs to apply for the Fall 2011. I’m interested in Virology/Microbiology/Microbial pathogenesis programs.

So, I have a question for you: Have any of you applied to Harvard Virology PhD program? I’ve been following the forum, but i haven’t heard any news regarding this program. I’m thinking about applying to this program, but it doesn’t seem to be a strong program. I could be wrong, after all it’s a program from Harvard University. What do you think?

neurohopes: i havent received travel itinerary yet…

If anyone has questions about interviews at UT Southwestern (about specific faculty members, the grad programs, or life in Dallas), feel free to PM me.

ooh, caltech bio seems to be sending out invites…

Hey, Dengue,
I am not familiar w/ that specific program, but what I think is somewhat usefull in evaluating the “strength” of a PhD program is just going to pubmed and search for papers of the faculty. At least you’ll know if they are active in their area. Not to mention that you are probably familiar with researchers (and research institutions) that are outstanding in their fields, so this might guide you as well.
Boa sorte!

BTW, good luck to everyone!!

Very few people apply to very specialized programs, such as Virology. Out of all the graduate school applicants I know, from all years, only one applied to Virology programs.

has anyone heard anything from stanford neuro yet?

There are so many people here applying to Stanford Biosciences that you can rest assured, the minute someone hears back, it will be posted.

i have an interview at sinai on 1/11 (monday) but havent heard from anywhere else. is it true that yale bbs/penn cmb are done sending out interviews? yesterday i called columbia and they said they havent even started sending them out…

I almost applied to Harvard Virology, but I ultimately decided Boston was not for me. It seemed like a great program though.

wait, so nobody else heard from caltech? that one interview invite was just an anomaly?

Hi, has anybody heard back from Dartmouth MCB yet?

Got my first interview today!

Applied: Duke (Dev & Stem Cell), Harvard (MCB), University of Washington (Biology), Berkeley (integrative bio), UCLA (Ecology/Evolution), Scripps Institution of Oceanography

Interviews: Duke!

Acceptances: none
Rejected: none

The person at grad cafe said they received the caltech invite email on Jan 6. That happens to be the same day I received an email from them saying that my application file is complete…what this means, I have no idea, but hopefully they are still reviewing applications.

Ditto on the Stanford Biosciences comment.

jeez, i thought submitting my apps early would lead to a quicker decision, but i guess not. sucks…

RIO2016, kryptonsa36 and lassathrax

Thank you for the reply. I think I’m gonna give this program a shot.

stanford neuro decisions made last night. will be sent out today or next week. good luck guys. actually if he doesn’t send it out by early afternoon i don’t think it’s coming this week.

i can’t wait until all these neuroscience invites are sent out…

I sure hope UCSF tetrad hasn’t finished making phone calls because I didn’t get one yesterday :/
