2010 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

Does anyone have conflicting interview dates? If so, what would you do if you liked two schools equally and they were being inflexible about rescheduling?

I joked with my girlfriend that, if that happened, I’d have them play against one another in NCAA Football for my Xbox 360. Winner gets my attendence.

Ok, two questions:

  1. Is it true that a first-round interview invitation to most schools means that you’re likely to get in, unless you really mess up your interview…?
    and
  2. Do some of the top-tier schools only do one or two interview dates?
Is it safe to assume that anyone who’s gotten an interview invitation so far is pretty high up on that school’s desirability list… seeing as it’s not even Jan 15?
    !
    Wow, this is stressful…!

received today…
UNC-Chapel Hill BBSP call to let me know of interview invite and
interview invite from UCI CMB through email

University of Chicago offered interview through email last month
Wisconsin rejected me this week

I think both of those questions really depend on the school. I’ve heard Stanford admits 50-70% of interviewees in one of its programs, whereas one of the schools I’ve talked to essentially said, “We don’t give invites lightly; we just want to make sure you’re as good in real life as you are on paper.”

Good luck, though, and keep us posted on how it goes.

awaywego:

When did you submit your application to UNC-Chapel Hill? And what program did you apply to at Wisconsin?

for Wisconsin- Microbiology
and I submitted my UNC application Dec 7th I believe.

hamster09:

did you apply to pharmacology program at cornell?

did anyone else get Yale bbs neuroscience track and Columbia neurobiology and behavior invites for the same dates?

n7el: I am probably going with dark pants (maybe with pinstripes or something) and a dark sweater. I think anything dressier will be too much and anything like jeans will seem like I don’t care. How about you?

talisshort: I am not going to apply to Tufts after all… The Sackler program looked better to me (deadline Dec. 15th) than the psychology program with a biopsychology track. I also emailed the program director with questions, and she hasn’t written me back yet.

Anyone heard from these schools yet (so I can get depressed again): UCLA (Neuroscience, gosh please say no), USC (Psychology, Brain and Cog Science), FSU (Neuroscience), University of Maryland (Neuro), University of Miami (PIBS), University of Illinois, Chicago (Neuro)?

I think I am out of the running for the Ivies, as I figured I would be, so still hoping for a couple more interviews from one of these schools (especially UCLA, UIC, and Miami…) Thanks!

Yeah, but I think with some planning both can be pulled off. See you there!

Some schools have distinct “priority” and “regular” interview weekends, and others don’t. Many top programs have two weekends, but applicants can choose between them and there’s no priority given for people who attend either weekend.

Re: attire for interview weekends, it’s really about what makes you feel confident and professional. I am amused, however, that faculty horror tends to be about over-dressing rather than under-dressing: one of my undergrad professors, when asked what I should wear to interviews, replied that he would be wearing a Hawaiian shirt and shorts, and that I shouldn’t look like I was “going to [my] grandmother’s funeral.” Similarly, when I asked my grad school advisor if I should wear a skirt to my preliminary exam defense, he looked at me, horrified, and said, “Well, don’t make it look like you’re trying to distract them from the science with your clothes!”

Did Columbia (Neurobiology & Behavior) send email invites already? Domestic or international too? Waves or no?

Any internationals hear from UChicago neuroscience? (I put Computational Neuro as first choice). And internationals from Yale BBS (MCGD)?

neurohopes: I am wearing what I usually wear day to day (I hate and never wear jeans). Boots for walking, black pants or black striped pants or something, and some one color sweater. Casual, but not so I will freeze or kill my feet by the end of the day. I don’t think it matters too much. Just wear nice, clean clothes. Put pants on and a nice dress shirt, and maybe some nice sweater and you’ll be fine. That’s what I think, anyway. Clean and fresh is most important, in my opinion.

safetypin00: hey just found this thread. i’m an international waiting for a reply from yale bbs (mcgd) as well. some earlier posts said mcgd was reviewing intl students first week jan? any updates as to when they will be sending invites out?

noooo idea. soon i hope, i hate the wait!

Safetypin: We should look similar. Still haven’t gotten flight info yet…

Is there even any news on Yale’s MCGD program for domestic students? One person up-thread posted that they have an interview, but I can’t find anything on Grad Cafe (or anywhere else).

@shannonista yes i did apply to cornell’s pharmacology program.

just to respond at the discussion earlier, i don’t think any school invites students if they are not interested in accepting them since it would be a waste of money on their part.

@ Molbio- I think Yale MCGD sent out all the domestic interview invites. I got my invite in mid Dec, and then I got an email yesterday from the MCGD track coordinator regarding the travel info and schedule. The email was sent to at least 40 other invitees that all seemed to have email addresses from domestic schools, so I imagine they invited everyone they are going to invite at least for now. Who knows, I could be wrong though. Best of luck.

Oh well, it was probably a long shot. Thanks for the info!
