2010 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

@lifesciencesgeek:

That would be a much easier question to answer if you knew what the target class size was. For instance, Biochemistry and MCP, from what I’ve heard, have class sizes of 5-8 and 3-4, respectively. If they both made 9 invitations, the potential rate of acceptance post-interview at Biochemistry would appear to be much better than at MCP.

I was referring to MCP. The thing is, not everybody who is offered a spot, actually goes. I mean they are competing with other top programs for these ppl. Does anybody know the acceptance rate post interview at MIT? Also I know this is everybody’s question but nobody has found out definitely when harvard’s next BBS round of acceptances will go out do you?

oh and PS. the head of admissions at my school lead me to believe that even at the top places only ~50% accept spots.

Hi Everyone! I’ve been reading the forum for a while now, as I am also anxiously awaiting word from one more school. Has anyone heard from Stanford Developmental Bio program? All I’ve heard about is Cancer Bio.
Here is my application info:
Applied: Stanford, Harvard BBS, MIT Biology, WashU DBBS, U of Chicago, UPenn CAMB
Interviews: UPenn, MIT, Wash U, U of Chicago, Harvard
Acceptances: UPenn (already did interview), Harvard BBS
Waiting: Stanford

I’m also wondering about the MIT acceptance rate post-interview… but I have no idea what it is!

I know, I was already taking that into account. If 3-4 is the result of a 50% matriculation rate, then it would seem 6-8 are accepted.

Are post interview thank you notes expected, or necessary? I don’t want to come off as insincere in some of the notes, yet if they are expected I guess I should send something. Thoughts?

@newbio

Last year, UC Berkeley Infectious Diseases adcom didn’t even meet until 1/27, so don’t worry. Last year, interviews were February 17-18 (which was mid-week, so watch out for that little surprise if you get invited).

Also, it might be wise to call them to make sure they have your complete application… one of my now-classmates (somewhere else) had her application lost and only heard from them in March when they asked if she still wanted to come interview.

Good luck!

caulobacter? you should work with lucy shapiro at stanford…

Hi Kryptonsa36,

Sorry, I didn’t realize you were taking that into account. i really don’t know what the atriculation rate is at all. I really don’t but that’s what my cell bio prof said and he’s head of our admissions this year.

Anyway, best of luck to you all.

So I’ve been freaking out about interviews. I only have 2 interview offers and am starting to feel like I should apply to more programs. Does anyone know of Biology, preferably Cell, Molecular, Microbiology or Biochemistry programs that are still taking applications? The time of everything is awful

@newbio

Yeah there’re still a few more schools, such as UT Southwestern, University of Alabama Birmingham that are still accepting applications, I think even Vanderbilt is still taking applications even though their proposed deadline was Jan. 15th. They are all great schools with no application fees (unless you are international). Good luck :)

I’m going to be applying for 2011 but I think my questions are still relevant.

College: Auburn
Undergrad GPA: 2.9
Major: Molecular Biology
Graduate GPA: 4.0
Major: Biomedical Sciences (Molecular Biology)
GRE: 490 V 720 Q 5.5 A
I have one published Abstract, one journal article in J. Applied Micro where i’m 3rd Author and I’m submitting one to J. Clinical Micro where I’m First, so it should be accepted by August/September.
Techniques: Conventional PCR with Multiplex, FRET-PCR, qPCR, Pulse Field Gel Electrophoresis, Multi Locus Sequence Typing, Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism, HPLC, Rep-PCR, Primer/Probe Design.

I’m looking to apply to UNC, Vandy, Emory, UGA, Ga Tech, UAB, UF, FSU, and Tulane.
I’m interested in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology.
My GPA is pretty low in undergrad, but I have since found out that I have been drastically under-medicated and when I went to my psych and got it all sorted out I’ve had a 4.0 since. I’m planning on re-taking the GRE with my accommodations to raise the Verbal score but I’ve been worried about really how competitive am I? I have 3 years of research experience and I’ve accomplished a lot…I just don’t know if I’m overshooting or undershooting with these schools.

MCP does not have a historical 3-4 size for last few years. Where did you get this stat?

@MolSysBio

Haha… I actually work in a Caulobacter lab now (have for the past four years as an Undergrad), but am wanting to study development in a system more analogous to humans in grad school. Also really interested in stem cell research. Working with Caulo has been fun though!
Are all the Stanford programs sending out interview invites? I’m just wondering about Dev Bio.

MIT’s (Biology) acceptance rate post interview is somewhere between 65-75%

A Stanford Biosciences graduate student told me that’s how big their entering class of 2009 is.

hope everybody is having a good weekend. any additional invitations from upenn bgs? there was a post sometime last week about the stem cell track completing reviews this past week. it seems nobody has heard back yet…or maybe the review process was over a long time ago…

about stanford: i think it’s safe to assume that all invitations have been sent out for cancer biology and developmental biology. i’ve noticed at least 5 invitations for the former and 2 for the latter. damn…

Also @ Izh,

Thank you for your info, I’m just anxious for that invite from Dartmouth.

I know someone who got a Dartmouth Neuroscience invite yesterday.

Her stats are something like: 4.0, 2 years research, combined 1350 GRE with a 5 in writing. She’s brilliant, and the invite did not surprise me one bit :)

isn’t 1350 kind of…average?
