TBQH I’d think this demographic would have a top/top-half percentile (whichever it is) higher than 221. Although maybe not, maybe I’ve become too focused on the Deerfields/Andovers/Exeters to realize that there are hundreds of “average” boarding schools in NE/Mid-Atlantic!

Oh that’s interesting, one of my friends (in NC) had a 1590 and didn’t make it… I wonder if she just didn’t meet a deadline for taking the SAT or something?

“IL too I think- it requires a 36 at least, which may not be exactly the same thing, but similar.”

Someone from another Pres Scholar thread was from Illinois and s/he posted s/he got on the list with a 35 ACT this year. My son got a “high” 35 in Missouri and did not make it. (34-36-35-36 = 141) No sour grapes here, but I am curious what score it took in MO to make the Pres Scholar Candidates list.

Has anyone started on their essay yet?
I just noticed that they give us like 11000 characters for our essay. That’s one long essay. I don’t know if they want us to write like a 5 page single spaced essay or if we’re just not expected to use all of the given space.

“i got in with a 580 math and 800 reading…then again im puertorrican so…anyways…do universities see this or take it into consideration…?”

You or your GC might want to write the colleges you applied to, and let them know you were named as a Presidential Scholar candidate. It might help the school put into perspective that your SAT score (1380) was one of the top 20 scores for your gender where you live (PR?). In short, it couldn’t hurt, and it might help.

Wait so to notify colleges, would I just send an email to the general admissions email address?
“Hi! BTW, did you know I’m a Presidential Scholar candidate! Bye!” like that basically? >_>…

Or can you send it with your midyear reports?
Also, are you guys doing the application and recommendation forms online or through old fashioned paper?
Thanks!

My friend was selected last year; she said it was amazing.

I got in with 36/36/35/35 ACT (sum of 142) and had a friend with a total of 2380 SAT (not sure of the subscores) get in, but another with a 36/35/34/34 ACT (sum of 139) didn’t make the cut.

We’re all from MN, and Minnesota as a state tests higher than average, so I’d imagine someone with an ACT sum of 139 could get in from somewhere else.

And about the essay: the 10000 characters (counting spaces) is about 5 pages, double spaced, by my count. That’s a lot longer than the 2-3 pages they apparently gave on the PDF. Or maybe they expect those submitted in PDF form to be single spaced?

I got it with a 36, 35 on the ACT (first time I studied and took it with writing, second time was required for CO and I hadn’t done any test prep in months). I know it was my ACT score because my SAT scores were definitely not as good.

It’s always interesting to see who got pick vs. who didn’t. I know a girl at my school who got 35,35 who didn’t get it, yet a boy who got a 35 on one sitting and got it.

For the teacher, do we need to inform that teacher we’ll be “nominating” them?
