Does anyone know if Rice requires that applicants submit 2010 tax returns as well as 2011 tax returns?

Only if you apply ED. RD decisions will only need 2011

@Valerieplame Looks like my D is applying to some of the same schools you are asking about :)

2011 Tax documents need to go to Rice through IDOC by March 1, 2012

Good Luck

Looks like I answered too quickly…
The financial aid site now says that you’ll need to send both. That’s new for the first time this year. It’s also new that they want you to use the IRS population tool to fill out the FAFSA (If not, they may request an IRS official transcript later).
I guess they are trying to cut down on “creative” need requests.

Where did you see that? The link you posted clearly shows 2010 returns are only needed for ED.

@valerieplame: if you’re not sure, send a quick email over to Financial Aid. Can’t hurt to ask!

Sorry - you are correct ED only for 2010. I clearly need to take the course “web-page reading 101”.

It is interesting that they ask that you use the IRS population tool when filling out the FAFSA. I dis use that new tool when I completed the FAFSA for my D’s returning-student aid, but was unaware that they might ask for official IRS tax transcripts had I not done so.

When you log into the Esther account, it says:
Complete FAFSA by using the IRS data retrieval tool by March 1
Federal income tax forms must be submitted to IDOC by March 1

Then at the very bottom it says:
*If you are not able to complete the IRS DRT, then provide our office with an IRS Transcript. *

I filed my returns on Feb. 7 and I am still unable to DRT. If Rice has requested the actual Tax forms via IDOC why they need the IRS transcript is beyond me. Just have to wait until Feb. 29 and see if DRT works to save some additional work.

^ to be on the safe side, you should request the transcript now, as it takes some days to process. March 1st isn’t so many days away. I’m sending my H to the local IRS office today to get a transcript. We filed more than a week before you and still cannot use the DRT.

The following is from my own experience, and I cannot guarantee this is still true this year, so contact FA with any questions.

For various reasons, my family cannot have their tax returns ready until very close to the April 15th deadline (much later than the March 1st deadline). I was told that not having a complete FA application does not reduce your ability to get aid. It simply means that you will not get a correct aid notification with your admissions decision if you are admitted. Unless the Office of Financial Aid asks you to, I would not worry too much about this deadline. They told me to use estimates on the FAFSA and PROFILE and they would make any necessary changes once they received the tax returns.

Again: This deadline does not mean you will not receive aid if you do not apply by this date. It means you will not know your aid with your decision. Please contact FA if you cannot meet the deadline, and hopefully they will tell you the same thing I just did.

@adamb529’s observation is my current understanding of how FA works. The final number is based on the final Tax return. All the FA office needs by the deadline is an estimate (if you can’t finalize your Tax return). The FA will be adjusted up or down based on the Tax returns sent to IRS.
