So, I've been surfing around CC, and a lot of people seem to think that this year is ultra/insanely competitive. My question is, do you guys think it's the most competitive year in the history of college applications? If yes, why? If no, what year do you think was the most competitive?

Yes, I think the number of applicants has generally gone up.

As long as 2011 is less competitive, I don’t care :)

I think so too. This year is also the most competitive year my high school has ever seen

I think for the most part it gets more competitive every year. I wouldn’t doubt 2011’s standards to go up higher than 2010, and 2012 higher than 2011.

It is, because everyone insists on applying to ten or more schools each.

And someone’s going to come on here and defend it by saying “you’d be foolish not to!” but the only reason that it’s gotten this bad is because of that mindset. I doubt that most applicants would be happy going to more than six or seven schools, yet they all apply to more.

2012 was pretty tough and so is 2013, I curious about 2014 though!

I only applied to 6 schools, and of those 6 there were two I had no intention of going to at all. (UCR and UCSD)

Most people realize that admissions are getting more competitive, so they apply to more schools. This drives up the number of applications at lots of selective schools, making admission more competitive. It’s probably only harder to get into places because many people are applying to a whole laundry list of schools.
