2010 tuition

Does anybody have any idea how much it will cost by the time it’s fall 2010?
I know right now it’s roughly $21,000 per year…does anybody know how much more it will be next year?

Don’t know about Fall 2010, but Tuition for 2009-10 is $2,066 per quarter.
The freshman dining plan (for dorms) is just under $1,446 per quarter.
The dorm is about $1,800 per quarter.

Not counting books or spending money, that is $5,312 per quarter or approx $16,000 per year (3 quarters).

My freshman son in the dorm does not go through much spending money (maybe $100 per month), and his books are approx $300-$400 per quarter but can be re-sold.

So I would say that your estimate of $21,000 is too high. For us, the total is more like $18,000.

It is now posted on the Cal Poly site.

Including tuition, room & board, books & supplies, transportation & personal/misc. you are looking at $21,582.

For me personally though I don’t like to factor in the transportation and personal expenses as I feel they already exist today and I don’t see this as an increase in expenses.

If you take those costs out of the equation, you would be looking at $18,243, which still includes the books and supplies estimate.

say 15k for tuition + dorm+ food.

then add books, extra food, and travel money to and from home

Isn’t $15,000 a bit high just for tuition? Ralph4 has tuition in 2009-10 as $2,066 x3= $6198. Your estimate would more than double that. Again, I’m talking about just tuition as you stated.

The figures I posted above are for 2010-2011.

Given the CA budget meltdown the chances are good that the 2010/11 figures are fiction or we’ll get another retroactive increase like we did last year. So, I’m budgeting on the high end of the spectrum; the mid $20s.

Still a much better deal that the UCs and or a private school. I will be happy to pay that for a great education at CPSLO for my son. His dad brought up that we could really save $ if he stayed home and went to SJSU, but we want him to have the whole college experience. I am going to miss my son terribly, but i still want him to have the chance to go away to college and CPSLO seems like the perfect balance of academic challenge and a friendly, supportive atmosphere in a beautiful location.

I do worry about the state of the economy here in CA (I am a public school teacher myself), but I have faith in the programs that are well established at CPSLO. Most states are in a similar situation. My bigger worry is that there will be a job for the graduates when they are through. But I am being hopeful and optomistic that things will be better by then!

GD i said 15k is for everything

No problem. It just looked like tuition PLUS the other things. Gotcha! :)

Thanks for all the replies!
so we’re looking at like 20-23k for everything?

There’s one huge catch though: Summer school was cancelled and students will have to pay $260 per unit out of pocket. That’s like a private school!

@momofmv “Still a much better deal that the UCs”

Yeah, but we will never be able to compare CSU vs UC for as long CSUs can’t conduct significant research. The ammount of federal grants given to the UCs is in the billions whereas CalStates like SLO get about 20 million/year in federal grants. Also, I just read that Cal Poly SLO’s president is resigning and that will definitely have effects.

That is a worry about the President.
Internships are also important and just good teaching is a plus. I would prefer my son have an excellent education so that he can pursue research in grad school if he chooses to. Otherwise, being ready for a job sounds more important. I agree that UC’s are an excellent education as well. My point is that you can get a great education at a CSU and for a better price. All public schools will be hurt by this economy.

maybe going to the local CC for summer school would be best. If there are any GE classes to be taken there. That is what I hope my son will do to save monay and to be at home in the summer. At least for the first couple of summers.

make sure the classes taken at the community college articulate with comparable calpoly classes…go to [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org)

Thank you for the link and advice cccounselor!
