Assuming textbooks and the meal plan are covered, what is a reasonable monthly ‘allowance’ for a freshman?

I’m planning on giving my son about $100 a month for ‘misc’ expenses and entertainment. I’m interested to see what other parents are planning on.

Zero. My son worked during the past two summers and has saved quite a bit for spending money at college. He also won’t be taking his car to SLO. If it turns out that he spends more than a hundred or so every quarter on transportation to come home & return to campus, then I’ll give him money for that. I’m willing to pay other expenses as well, especially for food if it turns out he needs more, but the initial expectation has been set that extras are on his dime.

Zippo. They worked during the school year and over the summer. Plus they have the savings we started in middle school for their college. Now, they are accountable to themselves for studying, spending, and getting through this portion of their life.
They’ve always looked forward to leaving the nest and, now, they are about to embark on their journey of their choosing.

I worded my question incorrectly.
Try this: What is a reasonable monthly burn rate which will cover items such as mood altering compounds, junk food, prophylactics, transportation to & fro, laundry etc., etc.? You know, life’s other essentials.

GP: Last year, when our son was a freshman (without a car), we gave him $100/month for dining off campus and entertainment. It worked out perfectly. We did give him extra to give to buddies who gave him rides home (or the train). This year, he pays all spending $ and gas $. He’s living in Poly Canyon. He should be fine with the $100.

Thanks CalPolyMom. Sounds quite reasonable. My son thanks you too.
