2011-2012 Med school applicants and their parents

Thinking of you all, remembering this time last year son was trying to figure out what to do and how much it was going to cost!

And the agony of staying on a waitlist pushes off the decision-making timeline into the summer- UGH!

Again my very best wishes and good thoughts.

Kat

Any final decisions? Any tough choices?

My D has finished with MS2 as of today. Classes ended yesterday and she has some sort of practical “test” today that she’s not too worried about. Then it is hunker down time for Step 1. They will take a 4 hour “shelf” exam as some sort of prep for the 7 hour test. I’m out of the loop but I know she is putting the time in.

Congrats, curm! Great accomplishment. My D. has only 2 blocks in her 2nd year, so her 3rd year will start in March, 2013.
Does your D. know what specialty she wants? My D’s list of non-wanted is growing fast, but about 3-4 are on desired list. I know it will all change after rotations and board score will make it much more clear, they have time.

Wow, my DD does not finish until the end of May with MS2 with about 5 weeks to prep for Step 1. She has gotten her rotation scheduled for MS3, it looks pretty good.

^^Not too much bumping all around the state I hope!

D1 received her summer placement for her practicum. She’ll be only 2 - 2 1/2 hours from home. (But more importantly only 45 minutes from primo rafting/climbing/kayaking locales. She just bought a kayak in celebration. And doggie life vest for her wolf.)

D2 has reserved her seat for the Jan 2013 MCAT. Hang on to your hats—I get to ride the roller coast again next year!

(Is it too soon to start a 2013-14 Med School applicants thread?)

somemom. D and I had a conversation last week about her rotation schedule. She had a plan that seemed to make sense so…she submitted it. The panel discussion she attended had a student who received their exact order of their choices and one that received exactly the opposite of their choices. lol Who knows? The good thing is that she doesn’t have to do any real traveling to sites and will sleep in her own bed at night.

As to what she wants as far as residency/fellowship…??? Clearly something “procedural”. Still probably surgery of some sort. Maybe ENT. Opthalmology is being mentioned again. And for the first time and with no explanation, pediatric surgery was mentioned. In other words, I know nothing.

Edit: Just knowing my kid, it will be something virtually un-obtainable and stress- inducing. ;)

“Wow, my DD does not finish until the end of May with MS2 with about 5 weeks to prep for Step 1.”
-My D. will have a choice when to take Step 1. They have one rotation devoted to Step 1 prep. and some are taking also Research rotation to prep. She is thinking about taking her first rotation for prep and not include Research rotation, just be done. But she still has to finish the last (hardest) block of MS1 and 2 blocks of MS2. So, plenty of time to think/plan.

Curm, your D. is considering what mine has put on her “NO” list. Kind of funny. When I mentioned ENT, she said that it is very competitive. Well, your last sentance explains this. Re-phrasing for my D: Just knowing my kid, it will be something relatively obtainable and as min. stressful as possible, since these have been her criteria since I remember her talking about medicine.

Dear financial aid offices,

PLEASE, please send FA packages. Yes, she knows she can only hold one acceptance after May 15th. Yes, she will gladly sign in blood on the dotted line. Yes, she will put down a deposit for housing, tuition and promise you her first born. However, she can’t do any of this until you let her know how much money you would like for her to give you over the next four years.

Thank you,
GAKID’S MOM

^Yearly tuition is available on web site, unless you are looking for Merit award. Then, it should come soon, although I heard story that one recieved $100k to go to one school on May 14. Needless to say, it was too late and an applicant ahs chosen another Med. School. I am not sure that she has lost so much as she has chosen school that she liked the best regardless of money, which is a better choice. Mine has recieved hers much earlier, but it was so low, that I told not to consider it at all as well as price tag of any of her choices and just go to the one that matches her best.
It will work out at the end.

GA2012Mom,
I’m with you. It is quite nerve wracking waiting for the FA packages. My son did get a call about a merit scholarship to “help him with his decision making”, so ultimately that will make it easier, I’m guessing. Just cannot wait until he can sign on that dotted line as well. And what about the Waitlist? Do you just have to put that to rest on May 15th even if you haven’t heard?
Grateful my son has choices, so not complaining at all. Just a wee bit stressful again! ;)

Waitlists don’t count for the May 15th deadline.

Does that make things any easier? Or just harder?

Miami. I think GAMOM’s kid is hoping for a need based package at some of her more generous schools.

As to my kid and her choices, I just watch in amazement… and sometimes a little bit of horror. But, we’ll see how this goes.

BTW, she is still thinking a research year after MS3 so she will be going through the match with those kids finishing their first year now.

She thinks that will set her up very well for the residency process and reduce some stress.

WowMom- DD is very happy to have one segment in Alaska! Overall she got a great schedule so felt lucky.

Do your kids do: Psych, Family Med, Surgery, Internal Med, Ob/Gyn, Peds plus electives in MS3? Or is it a different set? Maybe that should be something obvious, but I never asked.

DD has some likely areas of interest, but is really trying to maintain an open mind and see how she feels after her rotations.

Curm- are you saying the research year happens at some other school and she has to match into it?

It could happen at another school but there is no “match”. She’ll likely be doing her year or most of her year at Yale. YSM requires every grad to do a thesis based on their research . It reduces the stress level mightily to shove a couple course over there, too. Don’t ask me much more than that, 'cuz I dunno beans.

I was talking about the residency match.

That makes more sense, not sure why I did not read it that way the first time. Typical lame Mom moment, I suppose.

@ somemom–

kiddos do rotations in OB/GYN, surgery, psych, peds, IM, family medicine… and oddly neuro.

D1 will be doing her practicum in an ER this summer. She’s thrilled. There were only 3 slots for EM and she was lucky to have a high enough lottery number to get one. Of course, it’s in an perfectly awful town.

Ooooh Alaska! how cool! D1 would be jealous. Her roomie is a UAlaska grad and roomie has totally convince D1 she needs to spend some time in the 49th state.

From my kid’s school:

Internal Medicine
8 weeks

Ambulatory Medicine
4 weeks

Surgery
8 weeks

Emergency Medicine
2 weeks

Anesthesiology
2 weeks

Pediatrics
8 weeks

Clinical Neuroscience
4 weeks

Obstetrics and Gynecology
6 weeks

Psychiatry
6 weeks

6 8-week rotations for me: internal med, surgery, OB/GYN, psych/neuro, pediatrics, family medicine

This summer (between M1 and M2) I’m headed to Mexico for a medical mission trip (primary care), Colorado for a week-long conference, and back home for a clinical internship at a cancer center. Of course, will have plenty of time to just hang out and be a kid too.

Glad it’s working out so well for you guys! Good luck with your decisions :)
