^^ The collegeboard often disappoints with curves. To us at CC it might seem like oh yeah everyone missed it, but a lot of people miss these questions anyway (even if its not as poorly phrased) -3 raw for 800 IMO

Do you think it will be generous enough that -10 raw is 700?

I thought the CR was much more difficult than usual. The vocab was hard, the short passages were harder than usual, and there was no easy long passage. And considering the amount of debated questions, I think this curve is accurate.

The curve is -3 raw 800, the top 800 is -0

i expect the curve to be something like
(starting w/-0 raw)
math: 800-770-750-730-710-690-680
reading: 800-800-800-790-770-750-740-720
writing MC: 80-78-76-73-71-70

writing scaled:
MC 80 (essay 12, 11, 10, 9) 800-800-800-790
MC 78 (essay 12, 11, 10, 9) 800-800-790-770
MC 76 (essay 12, 11, 10, 9) 800-780-770-750
MC 73 (essay 12, 11, 10, 9) 780-760-750-740
MC 71 (essay 12, 11, 10, 9) 760-750-730-710

this is based upon my own personal opinion that math was ridiculously easy, critical reading was medium hard-hard, and writing was average.

So how many could I get wrong if I omitted like 6? I’m aiming for a 650.
On math that is.

3 or 4 wrong

can anyone who has taken the sat in january and another time comment on the difficultly of the january test?

I took the January SAT US East Coast version.

The writing and math sections were easy. The critical reading section was actually pretty difficult. And I’m one of those people who never had to study CR to consistently get 750+.

there is absolutely no correlation between the difficulty of the test and the month it’s administered. there is, however, a correlation between the difficulty of the test and how generous/harsh the curve is.

the jan 2010 sat had the harshest math curve seen so far (800-770-740) and had a pretty harsh writing curve. the critical reading curve was about average.

just by coincidence, the curves for this jan '11 test may be similar to the jan’10 test. i think the general consensus is that math was pretty easy, writing was about average, and critical reading was between average and hard, and more people generally say it was hard. however, personally, i don’t expect collegeboard to give us a lenient curve in CR even though it was probably more difficult than “normal”.

rd2012, I took the December 2010 SAT and I thought the CR of the January was noticeably harder. I studied much for the December test, so that might have contributed to my feelings. Math and Writing were generally the same. The essay topic was much easier.

^ Same here. I noticed that the CR for January was much harder than that of the November SAT. Besides that, math was equal in difficulty and writing easier.

bio1995, Yeah… the thing is, looking at the general responses in the CR thread for the Jan 2011, it seems like a lot of people actually got the “difficult” questions right, so I don’t think the curve will even be that generous… that’s why I’m cancelling haha

@1x612: I think you misinterpreted what he asked - he was asking for the relative difficulty of this test to any past ones, not to last year’s January one.

I would say that both math and writing were on the easier side (writing being the more difficult of the two), and critical reading was harder than normal. On a scale of one to five, easiest to hardest, I would label math a 2, writing a 2.5, and critical reading around 4.

^^ Then again, the curve is predetermined. I don’t blame you for canceling when you have already gotten an 800 in both the math and writing sections.

Oh, I never knew the curve was predetermined… how do they determine it in the first place? And I thought the experimental section was a section used from an old test to compare the test’s relative difficulty. Am I completely off? haha

I hate math. What do you think my score would be if I omitted like two and got two wrong?

-5 would be around 700-690

^I took January 2010 and received an 800 in CR, but I felt that this time around it was more difficult.

October 2010 I feel was definitely harder in terms of math and writing, but CR was about the same. Then again, I probably learned some math between October and January.
