2011 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

ponomabound:

Im an undergrad student at UW, so I regularly talk with the admissions people for the NeuBe program. I was told that all 40 invites had gone out (sometime in mid december?). I wasn’t invited, so, i took it as an unofficial rejection… or unofficial wait list, I suppose.

i do know that 198 students applied, and they chose 40 interviewees. out of that bunch they will choose ~15 students. i’m not sure when the “official” rejection letters will go out… hope that helps

I got a call this weekend for a Tufts-Sackler interview for the molecular microbiology program. Does anyone have any idea about their interview process and if it will be a large cut? This is my first time applying and I’m not sure about what to expect.

The due date was only two weeks ago, as well, so I thought they were quite early, but maybe this is the norm? I also applied to Harvard BPH and Brown Pathobiology which had similar due dates and haven’t heard anything.

I had kind of resigned myself to working another year, so any news is good news, it seems!

congrats rabbitstew! i don’t know much about tufts interview process, but i know its a great school =)

you guys, help me. i’m going crazy. i just impulsively e-mailed all the adcom people asking when they’d make their decisions and let applicants know… UIUC and Carnegie applications weren’t even due until today… but it seems like so many people are getting interviews, except me!

I feel you! I’ve only gotten one official rejection from the University of Washington and NO interviews. I don’t have great stats and I applied to 27 graduate schools. It was crazy expensive and the majority of schools I applied to are way out of my league. I’m just hoping for at least one!

@biology123: 27 schools? I think by sheer probability you should get at least one interview. Best of luck!

I’m at 3 out of 9 schools as far as getting invited to interview. I don’t believe any of the programs I am waiting to hear from have begun to send out interviews, at least from what I’ve seen online. I think the next 2-3 weeks will be a mass invitation period for most schools, considering stats from previous years.

@biology123: I applied last year and had a really bad cycle. Out of 14 schools that I applied to, I had one acceptance out of 2 interviews. I think with 27 schools you’ll be able to get into a few. Then it just depends on if its the one you want to go to.

With me, I decided to work another year. And that can only boost your resume. I retook my GRE and did infinitely better, had more lab experience and learned more things that I was able to write about in my statement of purpose. I also learned a lot about what type of program I wanted to be in (big v. small) and ended up applying to a whole different group of schools this year. I’m much happier with my selection and currently have 6 interviews lined up.

I assume you applied to a range of schools, with that large a number of applications. I think you’ll be fine even if you don’t get into your top choice schools.

Has anyone (recently) been invited to interview for the following programs:

UPenn CAMB
Princeton Molec
Duke CMB
UNC BBSP
WUSTL Dev
Hopkins BCMB

I know that some invites went out in early/mid December but I haven’t heard anything since then. I’m anxious to know if they have started their second wave of invites

Congrats to those of you who have interviews lined up and to the rest of us—hang in there :)

A professor at UC Irvine for Cell and Molecular Biology said that their interview dates are end of January and first week of February. He also said though that he doesn’t think they’re done reviewing all the applications. So perhaps there’s hope for those January interview dates? I’m just obsessively passing on any information I can garner.

@biology123, I got my email for the UCI interview right before christmas and that only indicated one date. They then were out of their offices from christmas until yesterday. When I told them that I had a conflict with the date they gave me they me about the second weekend at the beginning of feb. (I’ve noticed that many schools only tell you some of their interview dates but not all of them) I would imagine that they sent out a round of invites for the first weekend around christmastime, and will probably send out the second round this week or so. So thats my guess.

Looks like we should start hearing from Weill soon. This was just posted over at The Grad Cafe:

Weill Cornell Medical College Immunology And Microbial Pathogenesis, PhD (F11) Interview via E-mail on 4 Jan 2011 4 Jan 2011

@mendel: One of my friends got an e-mail about a Hopkins interview yesterday, so I’m assuming they are still some of those to go out!

Interview invites were sent out this morning for Cornell Weill IMP. There’s only one interview weekend available, which is Feb 16-18. My email said the deadline to RSVP is Jan 14, so if many people decline maybe more spots will open up.

My interviews: Emory MMG, NYU Sackler, Cornell Weill IMP, Dartmouth MCB

@charwang, when and how did you hear from Emory MMG? I applied, but also to the special M2M program so I’m not sure how my application will be considered…

Thanks!

Also, I found out that UCSD BMS is still slowly working through applications and definitely not done sending out invites. Yale MCGD also has one more interview weekend to fill (they only filled one when those offers went out that day in december), and will probably make offers this week or next.

@charwang Were you contacted directly by MMG or by the GDBBS? I also applied to Emory but to the IMP program.

Heard from Hopkins Immuno yesterday. Their interview is in Feb. Heard from Yale Immuno in December. Interview also in Feb.

Has anyone heard from Harvard Immuno?

Hey, I was just going to throw things out there…

I also applied to Emory for MMG, when did you hear from them and are you domestic or international?

I also applied to Dartmouth and was wondering when you heard from them.

@Compubio I have not heard back from Emory yet but charwang has. I am equally waiting to know when and how charwang was notified.

@chopin71

I received an interview invite from Berkeley PMB in mid-December. Nobody in this forum has reported hearing from Stanford, but there is a post in the 2011 Official Admission Results forum on gradcafe.com saying they recently received an interview invite from Stanford Biosciences.
