Is there any solution if you are already booked on the all dates offered and you cannot rearrange your commitments ? Can you do a phone interview?
Do you have to decide between programs? Thanks!

So someone on gradcafe results posted that they were ‘directly admitted’ to U Wisconsin - Madison Genetics. Is this even possible? I was called by the admissions chair in mid-late December apparently immediately after the committee met and he told me that ‘essentially’ everyone who ‘interviews’ is admitted, but didn’t congratulate me on my acceptance if you catch my drift. He did tell me that I was at the very top of their list though so I’m kind of confused. Anyone know anything about this ‘direct admit’ thing?

Also anyone heard from Yale MCGD in January yet? (anyone still waiting?) I am really anxious to know when they send their second round of invites out… Have another interview right after that weekend and I need to book tickets before I kill my chances! :(

Kurplunk, I wonder if the gradcafe post was a misunderstanding re: Wisconsin. I don’t know that they do direct admits, but I also didn’t know they made any calls in December. The invitation letter/email says that virtually everyone interviewed will be admitted.

hmm yeah, just curious… thanks though!

@sirtuin
when are the interview weekends for UCLA ACCESS?

I called UCLA and they said that interview weekends were: last weekend of January, and then every other weekend after that through ~mid-March. However, when I received an interview invitation they only gave me a choice of 2 weekends. Presumably this is to simplify organization by grouping people into batches.

They only offered me two dates, the second weekend in February and the last weekend in February, so it does look like they’re alternating weekends.

Guys, it is worst to be interviewed later?

I was invited to go to UCD during the last week of January (their first wave) and for now, thats the only grad program that invited me. I dont live at the US and I will spend some money to go there, so they are offering to interview me later at a time closer to another interview from other grad program (so that I dont spend a lot of money to go to the US). Do you think it affects my chances? Im worried but I prefer that option, of course.

@Immunol: I have the same question…does anyone know if you place yourself at a disadvantage by preferring to be interviewed on the later of two dates? I just got an offer for a school that has interview dates in late January and mid February and I would prefer to go out in February.

@labtech: I looked at these forums for last year and I have seen school that have two interview weekends that have accepted interviewees from the first weekend before the second weekend had occurred. IMO if they have interviewed a candidate and already think they would make a great fit there would be no reason not to accept them already. So I guess inadvertently some spots are taken, but still I don’t think it affects the second weekend candidates too much!

@Imm2010: thanks for the speedy response! I will keep what you’ve said in mind!

How come nobody uses WhoGotIn anymore? Does anyone know of any other sites to check app statuses other than this site and gradcafe?

[WhoGotIn network: admission, rejection, interview, notifications for graduate school application](http://graduateschool.whogotin.info/)

UPENN CAMB interview!!!

@mendel: Which interview date is your invite for? I know they have three interview weekends so I am curious whether they send out three groups of invites. Still haven’t heard anything from them.

@overcast:

The second weekend Feb 3-5. They haven’t sent out all of the invites for that weekend yet so the fact that you haven’t heard from them doesn’t mean you won’t be invited.

@mendel: Thanks, and good luck with your interview.

Woohoo! First interview with Duke Developmental & Stem Cell Bio Program (on Feb 3-5; they have an alternative weekend Feb 17-19). Was starting to get a bit worried not having heard back from anywhere Weight off my shoulders… pheww…

@Immunol and labtech

I agree with Imm2010 and I’ve kind of been wondering the same thing… I took the later date for two schools that I’m really interested in, but I figured, if they gave the option of either date to all candidates, they know that half of the candidates that they equally wanted would be in the second group, so I’m assuming that those in the second group are not at too much of a disadvantage. I think that maybe those schools that accept some after the first weekend may be those schools that tend to tier their interview weekends rather than those that just give the same options to everyone…?? but that’s just a thought.

I have also heard of schools that have told those at their interview weekends that they won’t give out any acceptances until all interview weekends are over.

That was a long response to say that either way, if they want you, I don’t think you being at the second weekend will make a difference. :)

I just got a call this morning from Boston University microbiology for an interview. Their date is the second week of February. It sounds like they have one big interview shindig for the biomedical sciences. I was on the bus so I don’t have the details written down yet, but something was said about planning to fly back on Tuesday the 14th! I visited BU during the fall and loved it, so at least I know I’ll be spending a long weekend with people I like.

Also, this is the second micro program I’ve heard back from of 4 total applications. It looks like micro programs are going through apps early this year!

@sconecakes and Imm2010,

Thank you for the answers!
But, now I dont know what to do
hehe
I guess Ill wait and be interviewed later hoping not to be harmful to my application.
