Hi Peruano,
my main interests in BBS are Physiology and Cell Biology. Good luck to you :)

Just got an interview from Cornell!!!

good to know ashmaniac… u international or domestic student? Good luck to you as well! :)

well done RNAi001… I didnt know they can reply on weekends…

I’m international

hi ash just wondering…only around 4 people in this forum have got calls from harvard bbs…when they are supposed to accept nearly 100.where are the remaining.

good… where from? do you know how many spots for international students?

Peruano…Apparently there are around 20 spots for internationals.

fallbiomed2011, yeah that might be good. means they will likely continue to send out invites. let’s hope for the best!

peruano, i am from Austria. I heard that BBS offers around 20 spots for internationals (and last year, they had 140 intl. applicants)

20 spots, 140 wow… thats a lot i think… i wonder how much for the program I apply for…
Ashmaniac, Austria… nice! I am from Peru but currently in Australia… i hope things turn out well for everyone here

sorry, my mistake: they received double amount: 280 applications, and 20 spots :(

wow… thats sounds even worse… hope my programs save a spot for me!!

@ashmaniac09: man that’s some bad odds for internationals. guess i should be prepared to strike harvard off the list :(

Accepted to Harvard BBS yesterday afternoon! So excited!

what field, BMC2011?.. r u domestic or international?

Hey all,

I’m curious about my chances on getting into virology/microbiology PhD with low GRE. I am currently a MS student with 3.7 gpa, extensive research, position in a competitive research assistant (besides my regular research lab), undergrad GPA 3.5 with a year of of research, however my GRE is 1090 (450V, 640Q, 3W).

Any suggestions: should I retake the GRE or use that time to take more courses? Also, with my current scores and gpa, would I be competitive in mid to top level programs? I would love to go to Stanford or Harvard.

Thanks!
Cory

@mantidguy: retake the gre, it’s the only thing holding you back from an otherwise strong application (i’m assuming undergrad was respectable at least?)

@sirtuin: There are not really “waves” of acceptances, which is done at once. Notification used to be done by phone and snail mail, so there could be “waves” of notification within a small window since its up to the professor calling you when he/she wants to call. This year, since official notification will be done by email (on Tuesday I believe), professors only had Friday and this weekend more or less to call if they want to.

@ashmaniac09, fallbiomed2011: Harvard BBS does not interview domestic or international. All students, domestic and international, are collectively ranked based on their application.

@Peruano: Unlike Stanford, the programs you listed as having an interest in on your application have no bearing on acceptances insofar as those programs don’t each have x number of spots.

@Jennie56: Both my undergrad and masters universities are pretty good state schools. All of my LOR will be very strong and from well known scientists.

My BS is in microbiology and my masters in biology. Also, I will have taken graduate courses in virology, infectious diseases, molecular genetics, biochem I & II, and epidemiology.

Thanks for the advice. I wasn’t sure if retaking the GRE would be necessary since it judges how well a person would do in graduate school - given that I have a 3.7 grad GPA.

I just an email invite to Stanford Cancer Bio! The email did say that a paper copy with the same information will be sent by first class mail.

OMG: I just went 8 for 8 in terms of interviews and acceptances! I’m so excited.
