So Yeah..that's the profile

Why do you both mentioning your 8th and 9th grade GPA? Michigan only considers your 10th and 11th grade GPA. Your GPA is solid and your SAT is good...but you really need to do something about your math. Try to improve your Math by 100 points. Ross is a toss up for any candidate, but if yuou improve your SAT math by 100 points, I really like your chances.

Your SAT score is good, but it isnt that good for UMich. Considering the writing is relatively unimportant and will continue to be for atleast the next couple of years, your SAT score is 1300, which probably is a good 50 points below the average SAT. I'd try to raise that math like Alexandre said, do amazingly well senior year because I have a hunch you'll be deferred, and, of course: apply early!

This year I made the mistake of thinking I was a shoe-in for Michigan because of my relatively high SAT score, difficult courseload, and legacy. Although I was ultimately accepted, I was really humbled. I had the same GPA as you with the most difficult courseload and a 2130 (my M + V was 1400) on my SAT and I applied in late September and was still deferred, so its pretty competitive and I can only imagine what it'll be like next year.

I think you have a really good chance, though. Good luck!

Remember CC, Richkid is African American. I'd say his chances for LSA are good as is. If he can rais his SAT by 100, I'd say he is looking at a good scholarship and probably a shot at Ross pre-admit status.

Well, I definitely overlooked that. Alexandre is right.

thanks for the insight alexandre and CC!

well, I didn't really like the math on the reasoning test, I'm taking Applied Calculus 1 at my local community college this sumemr, in preparation for Math 2C in the fall..

OH! yeah, taking Applied Calculus 1 over the summer:D
will this help?

hmm...actually, his admissions chances could depend on the results of the ballot initiative in the fall...

What ballot initiative?

The initiative to end racial preferences for college admissions, job recruiting, etc. in Michigan.

It's almost certain that the ballot initiative will pass. That's why groups like BAMN have been fighting to keep it off the ballot.

I have mixed feelings about it. I definitely think there are minorities who have had a rougher time than most others. I don't know about the status of richkid here, but if his nick is any indicator of his income level, than I don't think it should help him. Kids growing up wealthy or in the upper-middle class shouldn't be getting preferential treatment just because of the color of their skin.

dsmo - from what I have read, the ballot initiative will pass and likely survive legal challenges (it mimics the Civil Rights Act in key areas, and is similar to the State of California's).

Would this be enough for Michigan to consider going private? They receive a remarkably small percentage of public funding as it is.

decent chances. Starting your own business seems to be a pretty good hook.

Michigan wouldn't go private over affirmative action. That would probably **** off a lot of alumni with kids hoping to attend UM.

Is going private even a possibility?

While the UM could stop accepting state funding in the future, there is a lot of infrastructure that was paid for by past state funding.

I imagine that for UM to become private, it would take a vote by the state legislature to allow it to go private. I doubt that the state legislature would approve it.

regardless, the ballot initiative doesn't take place until the fall, so it would only affect the class of 2012 at the earliest.

Elections are in November. Since this would be to ammend the state constitution, I think it would go into effect immediately upon certification of the vote.

ahh yes, but my denial or acceptance would come before november:D

I'm not so certain of that...its VERY unclear whether or not MCRI would affect the admissions process midyear. We've actually been engaged on this particular issue on the student government side of things, since the administration has not shown that is has a plan in place to transition to a non-race admissions policy...so who knows....
