LOL, well maybe I suppose if your goal is FP, otherwise, there are people at Stanford, UCSF and UCLA who might want to argue the point. :D

LOL, well maybe I suppose if your goal is FP, otherwise, there are people at Stanford, UCSF and UCLA who might want to argue the point. :D

Please clarify, are you saying that FP is UDubs only strength or are you deriding people going into FP? Or both?

Did you notice the quote in my post? I mean exactly what I said. I take pride in being precise in what I write.

I will rephrase. If you are looking at FP, then you could make a strong argument that UW = “Harvard of the west”, otherwise, there are better candidates for this distinction out west. After all, there can only be one number 1, right?

How anyone can construe my comment as “deriding people going into FP” is beyond my comprehension and obviously the result of subjective bias.

:eek:

^I think it came off as derisive and sarcastic because you started it with “LOL” and ended it with the cheesy-grin emoticon. Additionally, the guy who wrote “To me, UW = Harvard of the West” was just stating his own opinion–not stating some fact based on research dollars awarded or quantity of high-impact journal articles written or Nobel laureates on staff, so I guess I don’t get how the opinions of those at Stanford, UCSF, and UCLA are relevant.

Actually, no. While ordinality suggests that there is only one number 1, all ranking systems (of med schools, sports teams, best pizza…) are subjective so the distinction of being number one is moot.

Entomom- when she did her interview did she get a chance to look around so maybe she would not need to fly back out to …(i’m assuming seattle and hanover?). It helped financially and time-wise when thinking of doing second-looks.

My mistake on assuming her app to Umichigan, her list sounded so similar to son’s!! Although he wasn’t as gungho on Curmy’s daughter’s school, too Montessori for him! HMS and Cornell were much more to his likening.

But eventually the money or the want to have not much in loans won out. I fugured it would in the beginning but let him figure it out as he went along.

kat

Totally something my pops would say. You parents and your tendency to always be right. Really grinds the gears of hard-headed kids like me. *grumble grumble

+1 what Kristin said in post #364.

Since you mean exactly what you say and take pride in being precise, your LOL is now easily interpreted. You’ve extinguished any ambiguity.

@kristin, I don’t see how I can be held responsible for the psychological insecurities of others. My post was a light hearted response to the apparent hyperbole of another. I was merely , “keeping it real”.

?? This is a very common “figure of speech” in the English language.
Example:
speaker1: “I think the Green Bay Packers are the best team of all time”
speaker2: "Well perhaps, but there are fans in Dallas, New York, Pittsburgh, San Fransisco, etc. who might have something to say about that.

Kat,

She’s spent a fair amount of time in Seattle over the years since we live in the NW, and she really likes it, both for the urban amenities and the access to outdoor activities. And she’s actually spent more time at the UW Med Center than she can remember as her dad had many surgeries there when she was young.

It was her second trip to Hanover as she visited during the UG process, and she did stay an extra night and was able to meet lots of the current med students.

I agree, kristin!

It’s amazing just how much smarter I’ve gotten in the past few years. Just ask D1.

~~~~
Also +1 to post #364 and #368.
@entomom,
There was a quote immediately preceding the “LOL”! IMO, the quote was obvious hyperbole. I disagree that UW is the “Harvard of the West”. Am I allowed an opinion on this forum? It was a light hearted post. What is the problem? Is this thread “members only”?
entomom,
Did not see it before “She didn’t apply to Michigan” - from our experience, good for her!! This one did not send my D. a peep in response to her application, nothing at all. Believe me even rejection is better than having no idea what is going on after seeing posts on SDN with lower stats getting accepted (but MI residents!!). Keep in mind UMich is a public school. Absolutely nothing to regret here! Awesome so far!
I didn’t think there was anything wrong with plumazul’s post.
I see what you’re saying now. I think the difference lies in that you interpreted it as hyperbole, and I thought he meant it sincerely; that is, he sincerely thinks UW is the “Harvard of the west.” I originally thought you were just being funny and replying much like the way you’re suggesting with the football analogy. What threw me off is your emphasis on meaning exactly what you said because you take pride in being precise. If that’s the case, then it seemed more likely to me that you were being derisive toward the school as evidenced by your (purposely selected?) words as I mentioned in 364.
And of course you are entitled to your opinions and I think it is great that so many different viewpoints are represented on this forum. Unfortunately, it’s hard to get the nuances of language from strangers typing, so I think it’s easy for posters to get defensive when they interpret something as rude or derisive (which, true or intended or not, seems to be how your post was interpreted).
For what it’s worth, I wasn’t trying to attack you; whether you like or hate or are neutral to any school or major or program or whatever is entirely up to you. I wouldnt have even responded except that you wrote that you couldn’t see why it would be derisive, so I was trying to point out the pieces of your post that could be misconstrued.
Hmmm, shall I order DD a new hoodie: UWSOM- Harvard of the West, we’ll go with a crimson hoodie with a bug huskie on the back :D
Heck I thought the harvard of the west reference was to their ranking in us news for primary care as #1 vs. hsom’s #1 ranking in research.
Kat
Didn’t mean to cause any controversy. I said “To me UW = Harvard of the West.”
Besides being #1 in primary care, its #10 in research. If you have ever used Zovirax or Valtrex you have Lawrence Corey [Lawrence Corey, MD - Faculty - Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases - School of Medicine - University of Washington](<a href=“Home | Allergy & Infectious Diseases”>Home | Allergy & Infectious Diseases) and the UW faculty to thank. (Yes you also should also thank Nobel prize winner Gertrude Elion) Anyway, rankings are subjective but its a wonderful school.
Congratulations to all the proud parents and happy kids!
I am freaking out!!
D only finished 2 of her 10+ schools’ secondaries (about a month ago), and “finishing up” the rest.
So many people already got interviews and offers, she is so late, are we pretty much out of the game now?
I feel your pain! My D1 also applied quite late. Sent her primary in over Labor Day. Did her seconadries in late Sept to mid-October. I think she hurt her chances quite badly.
She was very fortunate that our state school doesn’t start interviewing until October and doesn’t release decisions until March. She was accepted there and is now a second year there and doing well.
