2012 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

@greenertea: congrats! what specialization within the columbia CMB track did you choose?

@OopsIdiditagain Lol, yeah it’s definitely not convenient.

@mufamuscles There wasn’t an option to choose a track. Maybe you’re thinking of the Basic Cell and Molecular Biology program? I applied to the Integrated Cellular Molecular Biomedical Studies program. Whew, these program titles are too long…

Interview from UCSF BMS!

My UCSF Neuro application “status” page now says:

“The application is scheduled to be updated and may be unavilalbe from 10pm Friday to 2am Saturday.”

Does that mean anything or is it just maintenance??? It says my status is still “under review”…

so is columbia done with interview decisions for integrated by now?

I can only guess that we find out interviews and rejections by 2am. Seeing as how a BMS interview has been sent out already, I’m rejected…

It was a huge reach anyway…

@langerhans i don’t think you should assume so…mainly bc i too applied to ucsf bms! must keep hope!

congratulations dorian14! totally jealous.

duke2012neuro: Columbia is prob not done with interview decisions, just be patient.

@dietcokehead7 Thanks, good luck too!

Now my app for UCSF is back to how it was, “Under Review”. Does anybody know if there are waves of invites AND rejections for UCSF BMS?

@abqNOLA
@musttryharder

Do you mind telling which area you applied in? Also, could you please post your stats?

Does anyone know if Harvard Neuroscience sends out only 1 round of interview invites? I was told they send out all invites before Christmas.

@NeuroTheory, I’m wondering the same thing. No interview invite for me, hope there will still be more interviews to come

I don’t know anything for sure, but I suspect that Harvard Neuro would send all interview invitations at once. My PI was telling me the other day that they only invite 28-30 students to interview, and I know that the committee met on Thursday.

@greenertea oh you’re right - i thought CMB = basic cell and molecular bio in your post. had a small heart attack. thanks!

@musttryharder: Can you please post your stats? Thanks!

hey molliebatmit, I have a few questions for you. Can you tell me what the size of MIT’s neuro department is? Do you have any information regarding the interview invitation from the Biology department? Thank you.

@NeuroTheory

I applied to the PIN but if you mean what focus then molec. neurobiology. They didn’t make you specify anything like that though other than talking about research interests etc. As for stats:

GPA: 3.9
GRE: 730 (Q), 630 (V), 4.5 writing (womp womp…)
1.5 years interning at a national lab
2 years research experience in dev/molec. neurobio
2nd author on a Neuron paper (the only reason I got an invite probably)
presented a poster at SfN this year

Does anybody know if Northwestern invites in waves or did I miss the boat on that one? Really want to visit Chicago…

so i’m wondering about RSVPing for an interview weekend i’m not 100% sure i’ll be able to go to…i really want to, but the only reason i would end up not being able to is if i hear from another program higher on my list and their weekend is at the same time as this one. but i don’t want to put off RSVPing and be rude…

I don’t know how many grad students are in the MIT Brain and Cognitive Sciences department – I was an undergrad there, but I’m not sure what the size of the grad program is.

My year, the MIT bio department sent out invites during about the second week of January.

@mufamuscles

I would email programs higher up on your list and find out when their interview dates are on the chance that you are invited to interview with them. Then you can more or less plan your spring interviews around those dates.

But, don’t confirm unless you are committed to attending.
