2012 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

Don’t give up on the Harvard BBS invites yet… Here is what I found on their website

Applicants who have not received an invitation to interview by January 20, 2012 should expect to receive a letter from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, regretfully informing them that they have not been accepted. These letters are generally sent in March.

I did not see any email from them… But I am crossing my fingers still and hoping for that invite.

Hello
I want to check my application status in BMS/UCSF but I don’t have the URL. In addition, I didn’t find the link in UCSF website
May you give me the link please??

Regards

i got a rejection letter but it still says under review

Forivy
thank you so much

Me too I got rejected
Do you know how I can print the receipt of the payment to UCSF (application fee) because I need it
I didn’t find it on the application status

Hey been following the forum. I applied to CCB UCSF and Chem Stanford but havent heard back from anyone. Kinda worried now. Was the rejection letter from UCSF an email or hard copy letter in the mail???

Does anyone know when final letters whether rejection or acceptance should be out?

I know UC Berkeley sent out some MCB invites already, but does anyone else still just have “submitted” as their online application status? Guess this means I’m in limbo.

@khemicalkk - I heard back from Stanford Chem/Systems Bio yesterday, and from thegradcafe, it looks like at least one person has heard back from Chem, but it does seem like they’re still working on it - good luck!

@larken I called Berkeley’s MCB office yesterday. The remainder of the interviews were sent out last week.

I am going to have an interview next week and I am so nervous. I tried to prepare what I am going to say about myself and the questions to ask the professors, but it’s so hard. I am not a native speaker and I am worried about my pronunciation. Besides, I can’t think out the questions to ask the professors. I read their resume and some of their papers but I can’t think out any questions. I can only think of questions like" could you tell me something about your current research or research plan?" " How do you like it here?" . I am going desperate…Can anyone tell me that what people usually ask the professors during the interview?

any lurkers out there hear from Brown or Yale evolution and ecology programs? Also, any of you NYU interviewees apply to the molecular evolution “section” of the biology program?

… waiting is painful!

Hi Littlemouse.

I’m a little worried about those same questions. But I think you’ve found the perfect first question. Professors can talk endlessly about their research…and my bet is that its more important to ask questions that prompt him or her to elaborate, such as “could you clarify that” or “what methods do you use to investigate this” and so forth.

@kryptonsa36: To clarify, I certainly didn’t read too many papers (only did for my first interview, but then realized it was not that important), but I did want to take a look at the profile page for each interviewer so I could get a general sense of what it is they do and what their background is. I found this helpful as it generally improved the flow of conversation.

Congratulations to all those who got invites to Harvard BBS!
I look forward to meeting you all in the very near future.

To address a question that has come up a couple times, it does not matter which sub-specialty an applicant declared an interest in on the application. Harvard BBS is a single program for the purposes of admissions. People who are interested in Cancer Biology are considered in the same applicant pool as those who are interested in Microbiology.
However, also note that Harvard BBS is a distinct program from Harvard Immunology, Virology, Neuroscience, Systems Bio, Chem Bio, MCB, etc. (I realize this is confusing…)

Unfortunately, my understanding is that Harvard BBS is emailing in one wave. I suppose there could be technical reasons that emails are not received until tomorrow. I hate to be a downer, but I sincerely doubt that any applicant will receive an interview letter as late as January 20th. For logistical reasons, we were told that we should expect a list of attendees to our interview weekends sometime next week.

Anyone know when Harvard MCB is sending invites?

@mufamuscles - if the grad cafe is to be trusted, this friday at the soonest and next Thursday at the latest… Fingers crossed for both of us ; )

Johns Hopkins CMDB (12/27) MIT Biology (1/6) Stanford Developmental Biology (1/7) Yale BBS (1/10) Harvard BBS (1/10)

Did not get a phone call from any Stanford PI I mentioned in the application…I think someone was wondering this earlier. And Harvard MCB has not sent out invitations yet.

Did anyone else apply to UCSF Developmental and SC Biology…

Thanks canttouchrim. I got a call from one of the people I mentioned so I was wondering if this was standard.

I applied to UCSF Developmental and Stem. Got an interview invite today.

Also got a call from UC Davis. But I’m thinking about turning that offer down…I just feel bad for doing so :(

@xiv21 Since this is the first year Harvard BBS requires interviews, do you know the estimated post-interview admission rate (in the form of # of projected matriculating students/projected admitted students/total invited students if possible)? Thanks.

Has anyone heard back from Stanford, MIT, or Johns Hopkins Neuro? Getting a little nervous here haha.
