2012 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

@bunyabum I haven’t heard from them either. I tried emailing to ask about it last week, but no reply yet.

why is caltech bio funny?

Did anyone here hear back from Stanford or Princeton neuro programs?

Thanks guys, I e-mailed earlier as well to no avail.

yup sameee about no travel arrangement/more details for UCLA ACCESS on Feb 11-13th…I just emailed again…since its been like a month since I got the invite…

ucsf ipqb invites are out!!! interview is feb 9-10.

Just had my first interview we talked about literally everything there was to talk about including other schools I applied to. He didn’t grill me but he did ask a lot of questions about my research. It was a bit over an hour, I think others are going to be limited to 30 mins.

He showed me a PowerPoint for his research, and asked me if I wanted to us a whiteboard to explain mine… I ended up just talking but I’m thinking about taking my laptop with my research presentation for next time. Anyone else do this?

Question: Would it be appropriate to bring a camera and take pictures of the campus during the tours? Did anyone else do that? Obviously we only get to choose 1 school, so you’d think you’d want to capture the memories cause you may never be there again. Or is that bad because it might tell them that you don’t plan on being back…? Lol. Hmmm tough. You know what I mean?

Also flutterfly, did you interview with only 1 professor? Is there a difference in terms of flow and laid-backness between bioscience umbrella program interviews and department-specific interviews? Which ones are usually “easier?” Which type was yours?

I got Weill Cornell to let me interview at the same time as Sloan Kettering (same location sameish faculty so it made sense). So yeah not your typical interview.

And a small camera on tours should be fine. I don’t know if i should bust out my DSLR though lol.

Thanks.

Sorry I have no idea what you mean by this and you didn’t answer how many professors you interviewed with. Could you clarify?

@flutterfly_28

I am also interested in the questions that ssssmmm asked. Do you mind telling what school you applied to?

Also in my SOP I mentioned that I had a wide range of research interests and so I mentioned a few professors from different areas of research in my field. I’ve got a few interviews, but when asked what research I would like to get into, how do I answer this question? There are several fields that I am interested in and I am not sure which one I would like to commit to without finding out about all the projects available to me at all the schools. Does this make me sound way too unorganized?

Also, a lot of us do research projects as undergrads, but what if we would like to do something different from what we did then? I don’t want to continue in the area of research that I participated in as an undergraduate. I find it annoying when people automatically assume that you want to continue into the field of research that you were in as an undergraduate. What if my previous research has nothing to do with the research of the people I am interviewing with? Just explain what I did in a simple matter without too much detail?

@ssssmmm, I didn’t see anyone bring a camera at my interview but I don’t think it’d be looked down on if you wanted to, especially for the casual/fun activities.

I was actually wasn’t thinking of using the camera forthe casual/fun activities, rather more for taking pictures of the campus. A lot of these top schools have beautiful campuses and how often do you get to travel cross-country (for free) to visit these places? Probably never. It’d be nice to show the friends and family and just to have as a keepsake…

I think it’d be weird to take pictures during the casual/fun activities. You know, since they’re people you basically don’t even know. Might seem kind of creepy. Haha.

@ssssmmm, Yes, by casual I guess I meant like the campus tours and stuff, not the interviews with professors. Don’t think I would bring a camera to a one-on-one, might be a bit awkward…

“Hey Dr. ____. Say cheese! Blinds him/her with flash Ok you were asking me about my research?..”

By casual/fun activities, I thought you meant the night outings and lunch/dinner events, which I consider different from the day-time campus tours. During those other activities, I wouldn’t snap pictures of people I don’t know because, well you hardly know them, and you don’t want to be remembered as the guy who was more interested in taking pictures than making conversation or having fun.

Is anyone else still waiting on a bulk of responses? I applied to 12 schools and only got interviews at two so far, should I worry? One of the interviews is with a school really high on my list but without any others it puts a lot of pressure on my performance.

@fender…I think there’s nothing to worry about, since it seems a lot of west coast schools are starting to pick up steam (i’m assuming maybe you’re waiting on west coast ones!) I applied to 4 schools all in California and have not heard back from any yet, and I know that those programs are still meeting about applicants and whom to extend invitations to. I think u maybe should start worrying if after the first week of February, you don’t hear back from some, but at least you have 2 interviews!

@PDStemcell, thanks for the pep talk! I’m actually on the east coast and they are all east coast schools but my one solace is that many micro programs (what i applied for) are still not reported on grad cafe or here. We all just need a little reassurance some times haha.

@fender, no worries…I definitely needed some reassurance and my POI at UCLA told me that they’re meeting soon to discuss applications for the M&MP program, so i’m positive that some schools, especially with late deadlines are still meeting this week! good luck with the rest of ur interviews

anyone else waiting on an acceptance decision from Mount Sinai? their 5pm deadline today for letting me know has now passed…just annoying to anticipate all day
