2012 USABO Thread

@oldguy, crazymomster

I didn’t technically find out directly, but my teacher gave me a certificate stating that I was only an “honorable mention” (i.e. participated in semifinals), and the tone of the letter they gave was somewhat apologetic, so it’s pretty likely I wasn’t accepted. I know that the scores weren’t released, but I heard somewhere that finalists are notified earlier than everyone else, so I assumed they found out.

@kbolisetty23

I don’t think that’s the notice that they send out to finalists (or non-finalists in that matter). I think you are referring to the semi-finalist certificate (which everyone receives if they made semi finals); It’s not an indication of whether you are a finalist or not. In fact, I personally think that CEE is not even done grading all the tests yet. So I wouldn’t worry about that notice.

On that note, hope everyone makes the cut :)

Grading is only just started. Which is good, 'cause there was a mistake in the answer key.

The drosophila chi-squared test question, how did everyone find that? It was unintentionally harder than it was supposed to be. But you got calculators, right?

^ what was the answer? i put unacceptable just based on the data, b/c i don’t know chi squared stuff.

that problem would’ve taken more time than i thought was worth the 2 pts, so i skipped it

@ cadaeibfed - S said he did the math in his head and saw that the there was only one answer that was anywhere close.

@ crazymonster

Well there is a good chance to get it right if you guess. There was only 3 answer choices.

Does anyone remember whether there were more or less repeated questions compared to last year? I think there were fewer.

Definitely fewer repeated questions; I saw about 6-8 by my estimates. I remember seeing one question that was repeated on past tests 3 times!

Yeh, the question that always seems to get repeated is the bacteriophage set of questions. It seems like its been on 1/2 of the previous semifinal exams.

which bacteriophage questions lol? i’m drawing a blank right now…

I think he’s referring to the ones about the macrophages and E. coli that were on the 2006 Semifinals.

what did you guys say for the relative numbers of colonies on plate 1 versus plate 2?

plate 1 > plate 2

Still like to know if you guys can remember any other questions that you thought were ambiguous or poorly written. So far just the annelid/mollusk one, seems.

I think there was a question about exciting a neuron in Part B. I thought there were two correct choices: one choice was that sodium rushes into the neuron, and the other choice that the action potential will propagate bidirectionally.

But it seemed like there was only supposed to be one correct answer so I ended just choosing the sodium one.

the grasshopper appendages one was a strange question to ask… though i’m not complaining XD

unimpossible: agree, I got two choices for that one too.

The grasshopper appendage question was fairly easy if you just knew human anatomy since all of the bones but one were the same as in humans.

@ cadaeibfed

Two of the questions where you had to match cycle/process to the location in the cell had more than one answer since they took place in more than one location, meaning that they started in one location and ended in another as the cycle or process progressed.

I can post the specific questions when I get home.
