Official USABO 2012 Discussion

Hey guys, I know this is a year in advance but I'm pretty pumped. This is my first year taking this exam. Feel free to talk about Bio and what was on the test in previous years. Also, does anyone know how hard it is to make it to the boot camp thing? If you've made it, then awesomee!

Bumpppppp!!

I had never heard of this, but it seems very interesting…

Any links. I wish to be part of it

I’m actually not too sure of it either. I was hoping that past participants would share info with us.

Comeon guys! Let’s keep this thread alive for those who don’t know about the olympiad yet, and so we can share info.

Uhm…I made the camp this year. Basically you should talk to your AP Bio teacher about taking the test…he/she should know. I actually didn’t know about the test until February this year when my Bio teacher suggested I take it…the week before the actual test T.T. Anyways the first round is called “Local” and any student who wants to take it may take it. About 10,000 people take the test this round. 500 highest scoring of the test move on to the second round and 20 move onto the third round, which is the camp round. After 2 weeks of camp at Purdue University, the 20 finalists take 2 8-hour tests to determine the 4 to represent the U.S.

If you’re doing very well in Bio AP then you have a strong chance of making Semifinals. If you want to make Finals, read Campbell/ Campbell’s PP.

This thread should be moved to High School Life where the other USABO threads are.

Wow, nhi1605! You made the camp by only doing well in AP bio? I want to make the camp that’s pretty much my dream. How are the kids at Purdue in the USABO?

Last year, one of my friends on the Science Quiz Bowl team made the camp and was supposedly very close to being on the US team but didn’t make it. Anyway, his suggestions were that one should find a study buddy, who’s equally as motivated as you are. He said that he picked out a section each day that they did not cover in AP Bio and learned it, and his study buddy quizzed him on that section. The next day, they’d switch and every week or so, they’d review the concepts that they had covered that week to not forget it. He was very ‘into’ bio as he carried around the 6th edition Campbell bio book and pretty much read it everyday.

That’s a very good plan. Did his buddy make the camp?

Nope.

10char

lol than what was the point of his friend helping him but then failing?

Lmao diagnostician, im sure his friend didnt’ know he was going to fail. What a stupid question to be quite honest.

The open exam covers basic bio knowledge, passing it to get to the semi finals exam is in no way difficult. The semi finals exam is somewhat difficult in the sense that the top 20 people REALLY know their bio, and they score extremely well on it. And the person WongTongTong was talking about knew everything there was to know about anything bio related we asked him. He learned it all because he was interested.

What? Since when is not making to the camp considered failing?

I made USABO without even reading the campbell’s book… or any book for that matter. It’s all common sense.

^■■■■■.

10char

I didn’t mean he failed. I was wondering how far he got? I would be mad if my friend and I did that then I got to semis and he made finals. Just saying…

lol ya got me. you know who I am, right?
