If curm’s D were a slacker, DS would be more so. Recently, he said he wanted a research year because the rotations in MS3 are too exhausting and he could use some “break” after the MS3 year. What?! It is not about beefing up the credential; it is about the badly needed break! Another famous saying as an UG student a few years back was he valued the evening club activities more than the day time school work. If you did not know he still made the premed worthy grades, you would think he is a real slacker.

Taking a break seems to be the trend these days and I wonder if it is because they are trying to give themselves time to decide what to apply for?

Several students I know in Houston from Baylor and UT have done MPH or going for MPH after 3rd year right now.

DD sincerely wishes she could take her MS4 rotations, then decide her specialty. There has been major angst over this decision!

^ somemom, best of luck to your D with applying for residencies! I’m sure she’ll find something that she enjoys.

In other news, my LORs have finally been uploaded to AMCAS. Things are coming together quite nicely.

D2’s committee letter was uploaded–a full month earlier than she was told to expect it.

"…Recently, he said he wanted a research year because the rotations in MS3 are too exhausting and he could use some “break” after the MS3 year. What?! It is not about beefing up the credential; it is about the badly needed break!"
-This is sooo true, so to the point!!
D. had few weeks of Research (she had broken it into 2 parts, so she will have more Research later to finish (hopefully!!) her project and have a publication (we can only pray for it!). OMG, she is so glad that she had done Research between her Step 1 and Surgery rotation (currently). At her SOM, Research seems to be considered almost a vacation. Her current rotation is absolutely overhelming in all aspects, including physicallly challenging. We just pray that she finishes it without getting sick. Frankly, it is first time in her academic career when I absolutely do not care what grade she would get on her exam (aside from passing it), I just want so badly for her to be done with this rotation and at this point we do not know how challenging the others will be, but at least there is a Research break scheduled for the end of the year. I am very sure, she is dreaming about it already after only 1 week of surgery rotation…and she is not even done her 24 hours stay yet.

“DD sincerely wishes she could take her MS4 rotations, then decide her specialty. There has been major angst over this decision!”
-Mine has decided, but we know that residency application is the most challenging in a process of becoming an MD. She will apply to about 60 programs, but first, she needs to survive her MS3, and I have not to fall apart over this one…

Thanks, MrPenguin, she is liking too many of them; she doesn’t want to give up any of the ones she enjoys!.

Miami. Just nod and make cooing sounds. She’ll make it through and so will you. And you are right and I have posted much the same. Physically demanding for sure.

Here is the subject of the e-mail my son received from Mayo, requesting the secondary fee - “Mayo Medical School - Request For Fee”. How can you not love them? My kind of people. No pretentions and no BS here. :D

Aren’t they a free med school?

^They do offer a lot of assistance and their tuition is pretty reasonable to begin with. That’s why they can afford to admit so few - just 2.1% acceptance.

And Mayo is opening a new med school campus in Scottsdale in fall 2015 or 2016. (I’ve seen both dates mentioned in their press releases.)

D2 is disappointed it wasn’t going to be open for fall 2015. She’d go there in a hearbeat. (Mountains! Hiking! Rock climbing! Bouldering! All in town or close by. Only 3 hours to the Grand Canyon. Less than 2 hours to Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon.)

The Phoenix campus will focus on community medicine and all students will earn a MPH as part of the program.

My D’s year everyone at Mayo got a half tuition scholarship. Some years it is even better.

First II @UTHSCSA.
Must go shopping for proper attire, suitable for 40+ degree weather.

For interviews, do the Medical Schools give you a specific date or can you pick? Can you ever try and group schools that are close (like your home state schools) for around the same time? Is it a dangerous game to try and push off an interview at a school that isnt one of your top choices in hopes of getting an acceptance from one of your more desired schools early in the fall? With applicants applying to alot of schools, is there a way to try and save trips?

Interview dates— that’s school specific.

Some schools will let you pick from a limited list of dates; othesr will say be here on this date or forfeit your interview.

You can try to group interviews in the same locale. You can always ask once you’ve been tendered an II–saying I’ll be in the area on this date, could you schedule my interview then? Just don’t assume the answer will be yes.

I wouldn’t recommend trying to postpone interviews unless you already have an acceptance in hand. Much too risky. Remember: interview does not equal acceptance. Some schools interview 3-5 times the number of eventual acceptees.

DD did schedule some interviews for Dec-Jan, they were schools in which she had less interest and she hoped to cancel the interview, which she happily did in November upon admission to #1. So, yes, if you have the list divided into schools you want and schools you would accept if you did not get a better offer, you can put tier 2 schools later, but it is a risk as some schools will fill up positions before your interview date if the date is too late!

Congrats on the interview, Plum!

With regards to secondaries, what approach do most people take with the “additional comments/is there anything else that we [adcomms] should know that wasn’t listed elsewhere?”

Congrats Plumazul. What are your chances as an OOS?
