2013-2014 Applicants and their parents.....

is plumazil the newest ACE inhibitor? [Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors](Treating Heart Failure with ACE Inhibitors) :D

plumazul is doing MD/PhD and therefore there is no OOS/IS bias since it’s federal funding - although I just googled and saw that UTHSCSA is not an MSTP ([Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) Institutions - National Institute of General Medical Sciences](http://www.nigms.nih.gov/Training/InstPredoc/PredocInst-MSTP.htm)) so actually there might be an OOS bias.

Adding my congratulations, Plumazul. Way to go!

Thanks everyone for the kind words. :)

I had a wonderful time at the NIH G&P Fair yesterday. PDs and staff from MD/PhD programs all over the country were there. It was great to be able to talk to so many people in one place, all for the cost of Metro fare. ;)

Plumazul, Congratulation on the interview.

Great news Pluma…and good luck on your interview.

D was notified that Vandy screens before sending secondary out. Would a school let you know if they choose not to extend a secondary or do you not hear a thing? D hasn’t heard from Northwestern either. Do they screen before sending secondary out also? If they do not screen, should an applicant contact them to ask them what is going on? D has enough to keep her busy now but these are the two schools that she has heard nothing from.

Once the applicant submits their secondaries, are schools good about letting you know if they are not interested or do you just get nothing?

My D is still waiting on Stanford. It’s only been 3.5 years.

“My D is still waiting on Stanford. It’s only been 3.5 years.”

Its like the old days when we used to send paper resumes by mail and get a letter back saying we are keeping on file. When they did not respond, there was a lot of hope. These guys are taking money not to respond?

Some schools will reject you right away. (Like within 12 hours getting your payment…) Some schools will let you linger in limbo forever. I believe D1 got one rejection sometime during Sept (after she’d been in med school classes for 2 months).

I’ve seen this mentioned a couple of times here on CC. Which schools are bad about doing this? If I recall, I believe U of Chicago has been mentioned a time or two. (D’s not applying there.) It does seem a bit sketchy to do this after taking your $. I must say, I kind of like the premise of screening; at least you know you’ve made the cut before handing over your money. I mean really…within 12 hours of receiving your money and secondary, they’ve read your application throughly, discussed it (along with God only knows how many others), and determined to reject you and several others? Hmm…that quick? Seriously?

Well, the school that rejected D1 (and her at-the-time BF) in under 12 hours screens its secondaries…so a screened secondary really doesn’t mean much, IME.

Can anyone recommend a good handbag for interviews?

Do you want a large tote-type bag? Or something smaller?

D2 is going to carry a tote so she can carry an extra pair of shoes: flats for tours; heels for intervews

Less expensive: the sak’s kendra tote, nine west ‘it girl’ large tote
Moderately expensive: fossil sydney shopper
More expensive: michael kors medium jet set saffiano tote

Check out styles at overstock to see if there are any that might work. Get a leather handbag if you can afford it.

Remember you want something basic and classic.

Tote will work better . Thank you for your suggestions.

The sak makes 3 or 4 relatively inexpensive (under $100) totes.

Look on Amazon, at eBags, at the sak website, overstock.com,

This is likely a dumb question, but I can’t find a definitive answer anywhere … For secondary applications, the schools email you when they’re available, correct? (or at least notify you to go to their website or something?) I have a few secondaries that I finished - I received them despite my ACMAS app not being verified yet, though I wasn’t sure if I should go searching for the other ones or if I just have to wait for verification.

Thanks!

If you want to pre-write your answers, you can check school-specific thread on SDN to see if the prompts have been posted.

However, there are a number of school which haven’t sent out secondaries to anyone yet. (D2 is verified, but still waiting for secondaries from about 6 schools yet.)

I wouldn’t send completed secondaries to any school unless you’re received an official link and opened a school-specific file.

phillipb,

correct, you get an email with a link or directions or something like that. I would not go searching for the secondaries (although do occasionally check your spam filter in case an email got routed there by accident), but as WOWMom says, nothing wrong with using SDN to get a head start.

Thank you both! What I meant about the secondaries I finished was that a few schools emailed them to me already, despite my app not being verified (which seems like it’s taking forever…). I’ve heard of people searching for the prompts, but I’d rather wait to get it officially.

Hi phillipb22,
Yes, some schools will send out secondaries to everyone on their app list, but some wait until you are verified(while some schools have no secondary at all, :D). I don’t know what you mean by “I’d rather wait to get it officially”. The prompts for schools that only send to verified applicants are already known and you could be working on these while waiting for AMCAS to finish with your application. Why wait around doing nothing?
