2013-2014 Applicants and their parents.....

Congrats to Wowmom’s D!

Great news, WOWMom!

Ok, I need opinions.

D working on a secondary for one of her top schools. Looks like technically she is short a writing intensive class. She thinks she might be able to use a music class that she needs for graduation at her UG but the woman at the medical school who would give ok is on vacation until Monday of next week. D has had secondary for 9 days.

So,

 1. submit and check that you will be finishing requirements in coming semesters
 2. submit that you have completed requirements in hopes of getting the ok to use class
 3. wait to submit until after Monday (going over the 14 day goal)? The secretary of the person in charge told D that she has many emails awaiting her return so she may not reply to D for some days.

Virtual high five to WOWmom’s D! I’m sure this is the first of many.

Spring, I would probably go with number 3. Although if your D has room for a writing intensive course during the upcoming spring semester, she could probably go ahead and submit it if all the essays and what-not are already filled out. 2 weeks is the rule-of-thumb, but I doubt an extra day or two will matter in the long-run. Is there anyone else that might be able to answer the question at the specific med. school? Maybe, they can let you know if such exemptions have been made before in the past.

@spring162,
I’m waiting for someone to return Monday also (same school?). Since it’s the only school where I’m not currently complete, I decided on choice 3. I really don’t want to take additional classes if I don’t have to.

Best wishes to WowMom’s D2. Congrats!!! And it’s still July!!! :)

Congrats to Wowmom’s DD.!!! This is just the start of many to come for her.

Plum my D feels the same way. The extra class would put her at 19hours and (hopefully) with interviews, this would be a full semester which does not sound fun at all.

Thanks everyone. She was bouncing with excitement when she called this morning.

Now [the financial] reality sets in…plane reservations, finding a place to sleep the night before the interview, using up her vacation days.

With regard to housing, many schools have a list of students who volunteer to host applicants. If she’s OK with couch surfing (which can obviously be hit or miss in terms of good pre-interview sleep), your D should ask every school she gets an II from if there are opportunities to stay with students. It’s also a great way to get more info about the school if they’re not too busy (i.e. have an exam coming up) to chat.

D decided to freak herself out and add up cost of all apps, secondaries, and now plane trips and all expenses related to interview travel! I asked her to please not tell me that number LOL. From now on, that number going up is a positive thing and we all have to see it as such.

For her first II she was able to find a student host and schedule it for a day before school starts at her UG. Yay!

I’ve hosted at least a dozen students in two years. I always do dinner with them and help work out some pre-interview jitters by talking about what the interviews were like and what the school is like. They always thank me profusely! It’s fun.

Spring, tell her that the cost of interviews is a drop in the bucket compared to the cost of med school. And should she get a great scholarship to med school, then that $10k will have been all she spent. It’s sick that she shouldn’t worry about it, but really, she shouldn’t worry about it.

Yes Kristen, I tell her it is a blessing that we have to spend this money! I keep telling her that to not spend money at this point is bad news.

I think D2 said something about staying with a current student so the couch surfing option has probably been mentioned to her.

But thanks for the heads up!

Congrats to WOWMom’s D2! I bet more II’s will come. It appears she’s a very competitive applicants and she has done everything right in the application cycle.

During DS’s application cycle, he constantly argued with us about choosing a cheaper way and we kept telling him he should not worry about this necessary cost. I also think one of the reasons why he stays at the dorm where there is no AC is that it is cheaper. This summer is particularly hot and humid, and we now think it may not be a good idea to live there.

Congrats WOWMom!!!

Ive had good experiences with all of my hosts. Hosts are volunteers and want to host people. So usually they will help you out. Unless its like the day before a test or something

Verified! It took roughly 5 weeks, so the 4-6 verification time frame holds true. Tomorrow should be a busy day for my inbox.

It must be a relief, mrpenguin.

Happy writing!

Committee letter finally received : )
