2013 Bioscience Admission and Interviews

MIT Biology is a fairly large umbrella program, but it’s not as large as Harvard BBS. There are currently 242 students total in the MIT biology program, so they probably have about 35-40 per class.

Harvard BBS has about 60 students per year, though there is some fluctuation – my year was 70. (But this does include a fairly healthy number of HMS MD/PhD students, who are admitted separately.)

Microbiol: Congrats! Could you tell me when you got the interview offers from Yale and Duke? Thanks

molliebatmit: Could you provide some information about MIT microbiology program? Thanks

not much action today?

MicroB2012: Sure, what information do you want about them?

Basically though, Duke was via phone (with a followup email) on December 20th.
Yale was via email (It’s the BBS microbiology program there), on December 19th.

I haven’t heard from any of the UC programs I applied to (UCSF Tetrad, UCB NST, UC Davis Nutritional Biology). Should I be freaking out? UCB’s invites have already all gone out I think…

On a related note, if you’re not at the top of the candidate pile, is it possible to be considered after the dust settles from first round interviews? Maybe after decisions start coming in?

Thanks! Good luck to all!

I’m also curious about whether or not all of UCB’s invites have gone out already (though I applied to MCB)…

Does anyone know if having attended undergrad at the school you applied to helps or hurts at all?

Has anyone heard back from Harvard BBS (the Microbiology and Immunobiology track, specifically)?

micro2012:Prob Next week.

@micro2012

micro/immuno track? they send out invites for different tracks? do you remember where in the application you indicated a specific track that you are interested in? thanks!

I just took a look at a copy of my application, and there’s not actually a place where I formally chose the track. I did include in my personal statement that I was interested in this track though. I guess I was just confused because (according to previous years’), Harvard immuno might have already sent out their interview offers… not sure. Sorry for the confusion!

@ princebear and micro2012 - I think you may be confusing applying to Harvard DMS and the various programs (of which one is Immunology and another is BBS) and applying to BBS with a track (of which one is Microbiology and Immunology). The various programs have independent notifications while BBS with all its tracks share one ie Immunology and BBS while have two separate methods/dates while Microbiology and Immunology will share its notification with 7 other tracks. I think I got this right.

Last year, the Harvard BBS invites went out starting Jan 10.

PS on the last page of the BBS application you had to rank something like the top 3 or 5 areas of interest.

@edukimi
this is very confusing…i just looked at my application and didn’t find the area of interest section you mentioned…oh well…it was already submitted and there’s nothing i can do at this point

It’s been a long time since I saw the application. (I am not an applicant but a parent.) But I recall seeing that final page only directed towards BBS applicants and there being a list of areas of interest to select.

Found the following on the HILS application info page:

It’s been a lot quieter than I expected today…

Yes it has, and it is driving me crazy

Next week will be crazy.

I hope so, even a rejection would be welcomed right about now

It is too early to prepare for the worse? :(
