Objective:[ul]
[] UC GPA: Not sure, I have 18 years worth of college units and even the counselors had trouble picking through them. Over 40 A’s except and 1 B and 1 C.
[] Major Pre-reqs Completed: All of them
[] Intended Major: Geography
[] TAP?: Nope
[] IGETC?: Yes and CSU Breadth both
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis) & Job/Work Experience & Volunteer/Community service: 15 years in Fire/EMS including fire mapping, Volunteer Firefighter, Volunteer EMT, Tutoring, Network Admin, Home Health Aid, and a bunch more. 35 years on this planet racked up a long list.
[] Personal Statement: Detailed my fight to overcome a learning and later medical issue that hindered me early on.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes, and from what they show on their, I’ll be getting a full scholarship!
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] School Type: Went to LMU, and over a dozen Junior Colleges
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): First gen I guess. Don’t know if that ever came up.
[] Attending Transfer Admit Day? (if admitted): I believe so.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: 18 years of Academic excellence, 15 years of work in the field of my major, ability to overcome a severe learning disability and still get high marks
[] Weaknesses: Lots of W’s on my transcripts from semesters where I had to drop classes due to fire season. Low marks on 1st year classes at LMU before learning disability diagnosis, and were later retaken for A’s.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: A member of the UCLA review board came to my community college to speak and one thing she mentioned was that students who struggle early think that they can come back, put in a year of good effort and that’s good enough. They care about WHY you struggled. Were you partying? Were you just not serious? Showing just 2 or 4 semesters doesn’t show them that you’ve changed in her opinion. When she saw my LMU transcripts, she was not impressed, and said I’d need to do some major work to make up for that. When I handed her a giant stack of 16 years worth of A’s since, she looked at me and said, “THIS! Is what I’ve always wanted to see. Someone who can show not just a quick change, but steady proof of academic commitment.” That’s exactly what I gave her, as well as the medical documentation showing why I struggled before simple accommodations like graph paper were implemented. [/li][/ul]General Comments: I was told I was an iffy chance, even with the above. She said I was by no means a slam dunk and I had applied to UCSB, UCSC, UCLA, CAL State LA, SDSU and CSUN. UCSB, SDSU both said no. UCSC, CSULA and CSUN said yes. I really felt that with the UCSB rejection, I was probably going to be told no by UCLA too and I was probably going to settle for Cal State LA. I was pretty shocked, and happily surprised to see that I got in, and now I’m simply going to make the most of it. My advice to everyone is don’t ever let anyone tell you to quit. That you can’t do it. That you’re wasting time. I may be on the 20 year program, but I’ve worked hard, I’ve got 7 AA/AS’s, 4 Skill Certs, 2 Certs of Achievement and I’ll have my bachelors, and a masters in however long it takes. NEVER GIVE UP.

Congrats everyone!! I just have a quick question.

Is that the GPA you guys applied with? So the GPA up until the Spring semester before the Fall semester when you guys applied? In other words, it doesn’t include the Fall semester (when you guys were applying) GPA correct?

I don’t know about the others but I listed my GPA as 3.5, which is my overall GPA from all the semesters. My GPA for the fall semester only was 4.0.

Could you be more specific about the subject of your personal statement? I am at a loss about what to write for mine and it’s scaring the hell out of me! I am also an anthro major.

Decision: Accepted

Decision Date & Time: 4/26/13 5:00 PM

Objective:[ul]
[] UC GPA: 3.578
[] Major Pre-reqs Completed: NO (3/5… thought this meant an instant rejection)
[] Intended Major: English
[] TAP?: No (Really wish I completed honors program)
[] IGETC?: Yes
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Average at best, but not related to my major. Includes: Freelance Music Composer, Freelance Web Developing, some clubs back in HS, and Journalism my junior year (talk about throwback)
[] Job/Work Experience: NONE
[] Volunteer/Community service: 32 hours of wielding a hammer for Habitat for Humanity
[] Personal Statement: I honestly believe this is what got me in, but after re-reading it several times before decisions (paranoia…), I’d say they were decent but could definitely have been better (for an English major, at least).
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: 15k in grants (EFC over 13k)
[] School Type: CCC (Santa Monica College)
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Male
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): None

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Personal Statement, Non-impacted major, Upward grade trend (2.82->3.3->3.58 in 3 semesters)
[] Weaknesses: Incompletion of Pre-reqs (!), Lower than average admit GPA (3.72 for English), Lack of work experience, Relatively average ECs (of which none relate to my major except Journalism back in HS), and the list goes on…
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Honestly, UCLA must have seen something in my application that I did not see in myself. I always considered UCLA the “numbers game” vs. Berkeley as more holistic, but I was proved wrong. I can only predict that my personal statement is what got me in as I had lower than average stats in almost everything. Also, my major was slightly easier to get into, although I was lower than the average admit GPA (3.58 vs. 3.72). Needless to say, I’m so grateful for this opportunity and look forward to attending UCLA. Go Bruins!
[/li]

Advice for future applicants:
[li] WORK HARD: Choosing to go to community college was the best choice I ever made. If not for CC, I would currently be at Northern Arizona University (a school I did NOT feel I deserved). Now, I have the opportunity to attend a true dream school of mine, just one I didn’t think was possible. The past two years have been a grind, and I dealt with serious anxiety my first year and got a 2.82 my first semester. I felt ashamed that my friends were all going to great universities while I was at community college. Now, after getting into a good school, I’ve learned that the person who beat me up the most about going to community college was MYSELF. True friends don’t care where you go to school, they will support you whether you go to Santa Monica College or UCLA.
[/li]

As for getting into UCLA specifically (in order of importance):
- FINISH your pre-reqs (Use assist.org, plan your schedule in advance, and lastly, focus on getting A’s in them versus your other classes)
- GPA (Research your professors, study hard, and it WILL pay off. The feeling of getting into your dream school is life-changing!),
- TAP Program (my only regret is not doing TAP because it is such a good advantage in several ways [priority application review for UCLA, you have a second chance to get in through your alternative major, priority for classes at CC, etc.] and is not too hard to complete),
- PERSONAL STATEMENT: After months and months of perusing the College Confidential forums for advice on personal statements (specifically for LA/Berkeley), I have come to a conclusion that HONESTY is the best policy. Listen, as an English major especially, I sometimes fall into the trap of being pressured to use BIG, complex words and creative narrative structure. I’ve read advice from several admissions officers and one thing they stress is to stay away from trying to sound “smart”, and instead, just be smart. My personal statement was honestly very simple, but 100% honest. I didn’t ask for sympathy, I didn’t use big words, and I didn’t even have it proofread by anyone! All I talked about was why I liked my major, what I planned to do with my major, and one example that related to my major. It must have played a role if you consider that I didn’t even do 1, 2, or 3 in this list of admission factors (oh the irony…)

[li] BELIEVE IN YOURSELF: Be courageous! The secret to happiness is FREEDOM, and many people deny themselves freedom due to FEAR. Don’t be afraid to pursue a top school, or top anything for that matter. Don’t be afraid to do badly in a class. Instead, focus on LEARNING and the OPPORTUNITY you have to go to college, because some people are not afforded the luxury.
[/li]

And if all else fails and you don’t get in, so WHAT!? Life goes on. College is but one SMALL stage in your life. There will be struggles and regrets. Trust me, I’ve had my fair share. What’s important is NOW, not THEN. YES, I got rejected by every school I applied to as a senior in high school (except one safety). YES, I wish I had gotten a 4.7 GPA, gotten a 2200+ SAT, and became president of some stupid clubs (Why? “Oh, because it looks good for COLLEGE”). YES, I got rejected by a handful of pretty girls from my high school (smh lol). But NO, I will NOT let these regrets weigh me down in the present. They have made me who I am today, and I am damn proud of that. Every experience counts! (Even getting rejected by all those girls because now I’m no longer nervous to talk to any pretty girl hereafter. It was good “practice” you could say…). Despite all of these mistakes, I’m here now and things aren’t so bad after all

**Life happens wherever you are. Take risks and don’t be afraid to fall. **
