2013 Official UCLA Transfer Decision Thread!

@BioToUcla

congraz!!! i got accepted toooo. lol. too lazy to post status. prolly do it after my 2 midterms. so have you decided where to go? LA or SD? I am so torn. i heard the mcdb program at UCLA is a gpa killer following neuro and physio science. lol.

Congrats to you too!! I have noo idea right now, all the UC’s are such great schools and I’m torn between them! I heard that about MCDB at UCLA also, and I’m sure it’s not any easier at UCSD. Basically all the schools are really competitive for bio right? So I think location is what matters at this point.

@BioToUcla

environment indeed is a factor. have you looked at the ucsd major requirement? i think they have somewhat easier requirement and the classes are more interesting.(maybe because they have a fancier website than UCLA :))also check out their human bio major, i feel like if i decide to go to sd i would switch to human bio. lol. it is going to suck so bad if our GPA drop. what is your plan after graduation? i am aiming for pharmacy school, so this plays a role. sigh~~~~~

Posting a little late, but here I am!

Decision: Accepted
&

Decision Date & Time: Friday, April 26, 5:01pm

Objective:[ul]
[] UC GPA: 3.55
[] Major Pre-reqs Completed: Yes. Also took a lot of language-related classes.
[] Intended Major: Linguistics
[] TAP?: No
[] IGETC?: Yes
[] Applied: UCR, UCSD, UCLA, UC Berkeley
[] Accepted: UCR, UCSD, UCLA, UC Berkeley
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]

[] Job/Work Experience: Work at a private school as a language tutor; have worked with translator teams in the past
[] Volunteer/Community service: Working with animals
[] Personal Statement: Good. Writing is definitely one of my strengths so I think I was able to set up and deliver my life story as it relates to my major in a positive way.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] School Type: Santa Monica College
[] Ethnicity: Hispanic
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: Low
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): First generation, have a language blog that has been featured on LanguageLog, interested in different cultures, proficient in Latin.
I started my application a day or two before the deadline, and submitted it right on the deadline.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: My experience with languages, and incontestable interest in linguistics. I was away from school for a few years. I came back last fall, took 15 units, and passed with a 4.0, all while working part-time. I speak 4 languages fluently besides English. This semester, almost all my classes are language-related: American Sign Language, Linguistic Anthropology, 2 linguistics courses at different college – 17 units total, while working still.
[] Weaknesses: My GPA.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My passion for linguistics and potential to succeed in the field[/li][/ul]General Comments: Having gone through this process now, I can tell future applicants: don’t just talk in your application about your interest in your major; show it with the classes you’re taking, and some heavy unit loads each semester.

I also had an F from a class I didn’t drop from when I first attended community college a few years ago. I was able to get academic renewal on that in January, and informed all the schools in February.

Finally, I got accepted to all the UC’s I applied to, although I saw myself getting into UCR only (lol). The moral of all this is: work hard, and the top schools will recognize that.

ACCEPTED!!!

Intended Major: Political Science
UC GPA: 3.51 (3.6 UCLA GPA)
Major GPA: 4.0
Major Pre-reqs Complete? Yes 1 IP will be done end of Spring
TAP: Hell yeah
IGETC: Yes

Which other schools did you apply to?
Applied: Berkeley, UCSD
Accepted: UCLA, UCSD
Rejected: Just Berkeley
Waitlisted: NA
Pending: NA

Extracurricular’s: Various sports teams, honors student, MUN, Political science club
Job/Work Experience: Worked for a few months at a candy shop and at a US Embassy while living in Asia.
Volunteer/Community service: BLAST after school program, Lots of community service abroad while in high school
Achievements/Awards: Deans list, various awards from orchestra/sports teams,
Personal Statement: 9/10 Amazing feedback and help from various English profs/counselors

School Type: Community College
Ethnicity: Hispanic
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 100k

Reflection: F*** YEAH UCLA!!!
Strengths: Personal statement, well rounded/unique EC activities, a very good excuse explaining my subpar GPA (and perhaps still having a somewhat decent GPA even with those setbacks)
Weaknesses: Crappy GPA due to one bad semester.

Other UCs I applied to/was accepted to: UCB, UCSD, UCSB

Strengths: Possible my 3.7 GPA and 4.0 Major GPA. Doubt my 29 ACT, 1960 SAT helped T_T

Weaknesses: Yeah… I don’t know if being out of state crippled me, lol. Also, my essays could’ve been infinitely better. It sucked though. I was working 40 hours a week while going to school full time  . It was poor time management of my part, but certainly my writing in that essay wasn’t an accurate reflection on my actual writing skills.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: It’s rough for out of state transfers  . Also, I would have worked more on my essays  . I worked on them while I was working full time. In retrospect, I knew that my essays weren’t the best quality (I typed them up while I was chopping up food for kangaroos). No regrets applying though :)
