2014-2015 applicants and their parents

Yes, WOWM was correct in that my daughters UG didn’t send out committee letters until August 15th. Frustrating, yep!

DS’s school will send them out as soon as they are complete. Wish we could get this last letter taken care of. We know it’s been written because he sent DS an email copy. Sigh. I think his office must be at fault and he seems to be out of touch–he could be traveling or already deployed. Hopefully he’ll get the emails eventually and DS can get this finalized.

Does your DS really need the letter from the military doctor? IOW, does he have the minimum number of letters his school requires (if the school requires LORs)?

If your DS is otherwise in compliance with the pre-health committee, he can ask the committee to go ahead and submit his committee letter without this reference. Later when the missing letter arrives and (I assume) get uploaded to AMCAS, he can then go into AMCAS and have the letter sent to his schools.

If he doesn’t have the minimum number of LORs, is there another reference who might be willing to write a letter for him? Might be faster than waiting for the military doctor’s letter.

WOWM–thanks for the great suggestions. Luckily he got hold of the Dr. Dr. sent an emailed electronically signed letter and put another signed copy in the mail, so hopefully that is fixed. He’s applying to USUHS which specifically wants a letter from Dr. who knows of his clinical experience-or whatever they called it (he shadowed this doctor).

So how many schools did your DS apply to? How many secondaries written? I don’t remember this for the college process. Ugh!

Limabeans–ugh is right! He applied to 18 medical schools. That means potentially 18 secondaries (which have a separate application fee, too–$$$). He has received 14 secondaries so far. Most want between one and three essays (some are very similar and can be tweaked for the different schools). Most have a word or character limit for the essays (and most are pretty short–some as short as 750 characters). Many schools send out secondaries to everyone. Some schools screen original applications before sending out secondaries. They “suggest” you return the secondaries in 2-3 weeks. It’s a lot of work, that’s for sure. I’m glad I’m not applying to medical school!

Once they have the complete application (which DS is still waiting for those LOR’s to be sent in to AMCAS for his application to be complete) and they get the secondary applications then the schools will start sending out interview invitations (II’s). Then the schools will determine who to accept after those interviews. I believe this is all correct, but I defer to those who have been through the entire process, which is why we so love WOWM with all her knowledge and expertise!

Great news! The school finally received the signed copy of the LOR that was missing. So DS’s packet is complete and now he just has to wait until the school puts together their committee letter and sends it to AMCAS. I’m hoping that happens sooner rather than later, since they’ve been sending reminders about the missing letter and immediately emailed when they received it.

Very nice VAmom. My son applied to 18 I think, but was especially keen on those that had no secondary essays. Unfortunately, although his Recommenders wrote their letters, my son took forever to get them sent out. In fact, he says he finally got all that done this weekend. I checked that “other” site and it doesn’ look like many schools have sent out their iis yet. (whew!) I just hope he picked a good mix of schools.

Limabeans–good move applying to schools with no secondary essays!!! Good luck to him. Yes, so far there aren’t too many schools sending out II’s yet. We’ve got several good schools here in-state, so I’m pretty sure he’ll get II’s to at least some of them! He’s got a number of “reach” schools (although aren’t they all???) so he may have just donated that extra application fee to a number of them.

How many did your son apply to? Is he sticking to just your state, and then “reaching” further out, like to NYC and Boston or did he apply all over? You’re lucky Va has many choices. Our state has only one med school and my son needs to see it to “fall in love”. If it was in a city, he’d be much happier.

It helps to find out what schools offer “rolling admissions”. An early October acceptance resulted in DS eliminating three schools. Among those, was the one instate school, which was a private school.

My S applied to ~18 schools. Our state schools are “rolling admissions” schools. But not sure about the rest of the schools. When do medical school start sending out II? Do they post Interview start date on school website? Thanks!

I don’t think they post anything about interview dates on the websites. DS has gotten emails from schools that give a time frame when some schools offer interviews. There are some schools that have already started giving out II’s. There is a thread on SDN where they are posting if they received an II from a school and the date they received the II.

DS has not received any II’s because his school is still working on his committee letter. He had one outstanding LoR, which they finally received last week. I don’t know how long it will take for them to upload the committee packet to AMCAS. Until AMCAS gets his LOR’s and they are then downloaded by the schools he’s applied to, it is my understanding that he won’t receive any II’s (they want the LOR’s before offering II’s).

II’s are not posted on websites. DS applied to 14 schools 2-3 weeks after AMCAS opened. 7/25 he received first Secondary.By 9/24 he had already received 8 IIs. So you guys still have plenty time for II’s. Good luck. All it takes is ONE. Keep the texts with the alerts from the kids, fun to re-read.

D recently received her first II. Very exciting for her (and us). Here’s to more in the coming weeks hopefully!!

Congrats to your DD Camomof3!!! DS is still waiting for the committee letter from his school to be sent to AMCAS. Holding pattern until that gets done. How do they schedule the interviews? Do they offer a specific date or give the choice of several dates?

Different schools do things differently regarding interview dates. D was offered a specific date. I hope your S gets his letter completed soon.

Me too, although he really can’t start interviewing until September. He gets back from his ROTC leadership training on the 11th, leaves on the 16th for his thesis research in the Caribbean (on a live-aboard so no internet) for two weeks. Arrives back in country at the end of August. No moss growing under him this summer!

Vamom, my guess, the first set of IIs have gone out for those schools who started their interviewing early. For instance, I heard URochester sent out interview invitations mid-July, but I’m not sure if I’ve seen they’ve sent out others since that flurry. Like your son, my son also missed out of that early-early cycle. He dragged his feet somewhat with his secondaries and then getting his school to release his LoRs. For each one, he didn’t go over the 2-week timetable, but they were close. Then once his school released their LoRs, it took another week or so for the med schools to acknowledge them. These days, I read some kids over on SDN complain they’re having trouble scheduling all their interviews, while others are asking, “where should I apply?” I keep reminding myself this is a L-O-N-G process. I used to think I’d be settled if he got just one acceptance by Oct 15th. These days, I’ll be thrilled if he just has one II.

Congrats about the II, Camom!

Congrats Camomof3!

My son applied to a lot of schools and it seemed to take forever until he received all of the secondaries and was able to submit everything. What a stressful process! I could tell he breathed a sigh of relief when he received an II just over a week ago. A few more have trickled in since.

Good luck to all who are applying this cycle – Vamom, limabeans, camomof3! Any others?
