Hi Irishmom - oscar63’s reply is a good description of the process for instrumentalists too! My son plays jazz guitar (lots of prescreens for jazz) and the audition confirmations have mostly all arrived by now, with the exception of NEC and McGill (McGill’s prescreen isn’t even due until Jan 15th though).
Hi Pianogirl7! I’m in the same boat as you! Applying to Eastman for DMA in piano and haven’t heard a thing. I did call and they said we should hear sometime this week. Good luck!
We requested a new audition date from USC, stating that my son had a prior commitment. They asked what the commitment was, and we said that he had already agreed to do an audition at Vanderbilt on the same day and, since he could not count on being accepted at Thornton, we wanted to honor that commitment. Was this a huge mistake? Should we have made up a family funeral? They said (on the phone) they might not grant the request!
My son heard from Eastman today–he passed for UG cello! He is very excited to have passed all of his prescreenings (Rice, NW, Eastman) How difficult is the prescreening process? We both have no idea.
Bluemeringue, I think you did the right thing. You were asked directly and you answered honestly. Maybe the schools even share audition lists (and maybe I’m superstitious about fictitious funerals!)
I think you did the right thing, Bluemeringue. The music world can be a small place, and word does get around. Honestly, if that is how the school treats prospective students, it make you wonder how they treat “their own”. Things have a funny way of working out. Good luck to you and your son.
In our experience schools were accommodating when there was a conflict for auditions with other schools. For undergrad my daughter had to change 2 auditions and a third she had to send a DVD by mail because they had only one audition day. In each case, the rescheduling was a scramble (and one audition was rescheduled to 8:30 AM, ugh) but the sense is that these conflicts happen regularly. For grad school she also had to change one date. The best advice I can give is to be cheerful to the person who does the scheduling–she or he is getting a lot of these phone calls! Also, don’t complain to them. They don’t make the policies, so it’s not your fault. But they can help you out, so take care not to alienate them, no matter how frustrated you are feeling.

Thanks all. I’m glad I didn’t blow it for my son. I really hope he has the opportunity to do both auditions. It’s so incredibly competitive that he needs to maximize his chances. Way too stressful. Poor all of us. I can’t believe that I thought senior year was going to be easier once applications were in.
@2015Lalo – Rice, in particular, is exceedingly competitive. If your son passed Eastman, NW and Rice, I think he has every reason to be quite optimistic. Congratulations!
USC gave my son a new audition time. We’ll have to fly directly from Vanderbilt (Nashville) to USC (LA) on Saturday, since his audition is on Sunday at noon. But it’s done. Phew.
I agree too Bluemeringue- honesty is always the best policy- Could he change his date at Vanderbilt?
They changed the date! We are all set. He’s flying from Vanderbilt to USC on Saturday night. His USC audition is now on Sunday. It will be a busy weekend. Thank you so much for your kindness.

Hello, I have a question for those who got notification from Northwestern. I submitted my Northwestern application on Dec. 30th (I completed the audition registration form) but I haven’t heard anything from them yet. I’m wondering when did you guys hand in your application and does anyone know if Northwestern sends out email if you didn’t pass prescreening? Thank you!
