Sorry to say that CMU said no. Please check your spam folder. That’s where I found the email.
saintfan,
Sorry to hear about your son’s rejection. And I am so happy to see that he is focused and working hard on his other applications. Remind him that not getting pass the prescreen is not a particularly good measure of your son’s potential or how good he is. NEC is very small. And you have no idea what specifically they were looking for this year.
And yes there is a lot of mixing of genres at NEC but that mixing is often done by students and not by the faculty.
Bluemeringue…my son did not end up attending Oberlin. He was never that excited about going there as he wanted to be in a city. But also I think he felt that if he went to Oberlin he would just be too distracted and would drift away from focusing on music. Which is why he ended up at a stand alone conservatory…NEC.
But I adored Oberlin and the admissions officer who handled my son’s application and I also know students from my son’s high school who went there and are doing really well in the music world.
We finally heard from CMU (piano UG). Pass. Sorry to those who waited so long and had disappointing news from CMU. But in the music world, Oberlin is more respected than CMU, so just keep perspective and try to focus on the good news and audition prep ahead.
Congratulations, bigbro96!! Your son deserves this. My son’s confidence is so shaken. I’m worried how he’ll do on his auditions this weekend. He has three in a row: Boston U., Stanford U., Oberlin. I’m trying to keep him focused and optimistic, but it’s difficult. He texted me: “I’m losing.”
Bluemeringue, So sorry about your son, heartbreaking. These kids are really so young and tender- the timing is horrible for him. Hopefully he can pull himself out of it and focus on the things he’s earned.
Thanks so much, Oscar. My heart aches for him. I know it’s character-building and a necessary part of being a musician … but he’s still a kid. I sure hope he gets NEC, but I’m not terribly optimistic. I’m guessing Juilliard is a big no at this point.
Bluemeringue…YOU NEED TO REMIND HIM…These prescreen auditions are NOT a measure of him as a musician. Nor can any college tell from a prescreen what your son’s potential is or how good he will be in a year or two years.
Remind your son that he is young. Remind him that college is a beginning and not an end point. Remind him that many famous academics, musicians, artists etc…were rejected or failed. They all tell stories of how that failure just inspired them to work harder at the thing they loved. BU, Stanford and Oberlin are all amazing schools. He should be very proud and he needs to go in thinking he is was just too good for any school that rejected him.
I’m so sorry your son is discouraged. If it helps. please tell him I’m a professional musician (flutist) and really, Oberlin is a great school and it’s an honor to be selected there, As I mentioned, I’m a Juilliard grad, but would prefer my son did a dual degree to prepare for today’s world. Music is a hard life - unfortunately, rejection is a part of it. Most music school grads will face very difficult odds of making it in music and many will go in other directions. If music is what he loves, he has to shut out the negative forces, though still keep a reality check on the difficulties that lie ahead for all - including the most successful and talented students.
You both are so compassionate and encouraging. You literally made my eyes mist. Thank you. I am going to share your thoughts with him. I know it will mean a great deal to him. He will bounce back. And, yes, you are right, he will continue to improve. And he is in great company – even great musicians get rejected sometimes. Thank you so much!

@bluemeringue Don’t let this badly influence you son just before the auditions. Ok, it might work. To be the most optimistic, there is only one school I can attend. So seizing the chances I already had! Good luck to your son!
Thank you so much, Steinway and congratulations on NEC!! We haven’t heard, so we’re assuming it’s another no-go. I’m sure you’ll be fantastic and knock them dead!
Opps… Missing one letter of my name…
