HI all - I’ve been out of the loop a few days now preparing for the first live audition at CMU, We just got back - drove nearly 7 hrs to beat the storm. Anyhow, after this stress it was so nice to spend some time with my son & take him out for lunch afterward. It’s crazy stress for all but it will be over soon. He sounded really good through the door - regardless of the results I’m proud of him.
@bigbro96- Glad that you got home safely. Could you please take a few minutes and post about the day at CMU over in the “audition experience” thread?

One thing we can all agree on, is that being a true, dedicated musician is indeed one of the most difficult professions IN THE WORLD. I mean, being a doctor and a lawyer and all that smart stuff is definitely an impressive 8 years through school and passing boards and all, but this career… to choose it knowing the uncertainty, knowing that no matter how many facts you memorize or how much you know, you still may not be able to put food on the table, as it’s not just a test you pass and then voila, career!.. that kind of hope and dedication can only be found in the arts. Teaching music, performing music- advocating for music, administering music, these are never guaranteed careers with guaranteed jobs to put food on the table. Not in 2015. So props to the students and parents who reach for it anyway. We are the backbone of culture and we are what keeps the world a beautiful place to live in.
Crunch time is about to hit. My daughter did her first VP audition for Ithaca a few weeks ago - a regional held at the Meyerson Symphony Center where she has been singing since she was 10, with an accompanist she has known for years. So it was nice to have that first one in the least stressful environment. Now, in short order, she has UNT (Feb 7), Oberlin regional in Houston (Feb 10), Chicago College of Performing Arts (Feb 21) and Mannes (March 2). Just hoping that she can somehow avoid the colds and flu that everyone seems to be coming down with! Also hoping that her teachers will be flexible with the missed classes and late assignments that are just the reality right now! We visited Oberlin last weekend and she did a trial lesson, and I must say that for being a small campus in rural Ohio, we found it delightful. The admissions personnel, students and professors we met with were genuinely a pleasure to spend time with, and we also really enjoyed getting to know the one other applicant who was doing the conservatory tour with us.
The daunting part now, once we get past auditions, is to evaluate the cost/benefit. I have to admit that the prospect of $60,000/year is a bit scary, when you are unlikely to qualify for need-based aid. That is a huge plus for UNT, where in-state tuition is a fraction of the cost and the program is very well regarded. It is helpful to remember in the VP world that Renee Fleming came out of Crane at SUNY-Potsdam (a great program in the absolute middle of nowhere), and Joyce DiDinato came out of Wichita State (Toto, I don’t think she’s in Kansas anymore). I want my daughter to pursue her dream at the finest program that she can get into, but if, for instance, that winds up being UNT at $18k/year and Mannes at $60k/year, and the private school doesn’t put a meaningful amount of merit-based money on the table, we will have to do some serious soul searching as to what makes sense. The money may be better invested in graduate school and summer institutes to build her professional network. Anyone else have a perspective on how you evaluate this trade-off?
@FriscoFred That is the question- where do you put the money? If all things were equal it makes sense to go the less expensive school. If the more expensive program is significantly better, we would try and make that happen for our daughter. The difference you are describing is pretty significant. Furthermore, with my limited understanding UNT is a good program. I hope we are so fortunate to have these hard decisions to make. Best of luck to your daughter 
@FriscoFred I think what makes the decision even more difficult is that all of those programs and schools are very different from each other. They are all very good, though. It is also really hard to know until you see the $ for each school.
Anybody hear from McGill yet regarding prescreens?
D passed prescreen for VP G and just completed audition this weekend at Mcgill
I don’t think McGill has sent any UG pre-screen notifications out yet. We’ve been checking email several times per day. Their audition week overlaps with Mannes in New York and we really want to coordinate the travel, so I’m hoping that we hear soon.

Hello! I’ve been creeping on this forum for quite some time now, tracking notices and stuff for my own benefit…has anyone heard back from SUNY Purchase for Graduate Voice? That audition is supposed to coming up soon and I have not yet received any word in regards to the pre-screen. plan on to call on Monday, but was wondering if anyone had any idea about that school. @BCVIOLINMOM , you are correct. The only way to see status at McGill is to log in to Minerva. I had assumed they would send an email, at least one saying “log into Minerva to see a new status update.” Silly me. Turns out they had posted the update on 1/23, but we didn’t see it until we checked Minerva this week.
I know there was discussion a couple of weeks ago on this thread regarding ‘hard feelings’ between instrumentalists and vocalists. Just wanted to share a story from last night. The orchestra my son is playing in this year was in the pit for this weekend’s opera at his school. He texted me a picture of himself after the opera that someone had taken. He was in his tux but he was also wearing a red carnation. I asked him why he was wearing a carnation and he said one of the leads from the opera had given everyone in the orchestra a carnation! Now I don’t know if this is a standard thing between opera casts and pit orchestras, or even if it is something that is normally done at his school, but what a nice gesture. For a freshman who has no prior experience with opera, that small gesture will likely go a long way in how he perceives vocalists in the future.
No, VIOLINMOM, that is not “custom” anywhere, but it was certainly nice! How did your son enjoy playing for the opera? “Alcina” is one that keeps the orchestra more than busy, so it’s been trial by fire!
