2014 Candidate Weekend

malkovichio…we were very impressed by Olin at the open house, but a combination of the math you highlight (we estimated the same number of openings) and some random comments about the challenges grads had faced in grad school lead us to EA at a very selective school. Luckily that worked out and we never applied to Olin.

As a bit of optimism, we left also feeling that most people invited to CW are admitted or deferred. When you consider the options many will have, getting a 40 or 50 percent matriculation rate out of acceptances is good. I would tell everyone to relax and be yourselves…I think your chances a very good.

To all those who got into CW congratulations. To those who did not make it, this year the stats were tough. There were 998 applications, 221 accepted to CW and of that 110 will be admitted before the wait list. 20 students that took a gap year are accepted into the class of 2018. If Olin is your first choice make sure they know that at CW. It is all about the fit.

Are there travel stipends/grants to CW? And is there overnight hosting on campus (i.e. possible to arrange roommates ahead of time) or will we need to find a hotel nearby?

My recollection is that due to the mandatory nature of CW, Olin covers travel costs for students…mom and dad are on their own.

Housing and meals are on-campus for the students, and they’ll arrange transport from the airport / train.

They can afford it…don’t worry.

The packet you receive will contain all the information for traveling to CW. Some space is available at nearby Babson Executive Conf Center (a hotel is part of that) that is walking distance to Olin. That is both for parents and students, although students traveling alone definitely stay at the BECC and they arrange roommates for students who are alone. Candidates do not stay in the dorms.

I just made a facebook page called Olin Candidates’ Weekend 2014 for other people going to candidates’ weekend. If you could add yourself if you got in, that’d be cool.

I couldn’t find it on facebook  Is it set to secret?

me neither!

Look up “Olin College Candidates’ Weekend 2014” on Facebook and add yourself to the group for those who got invited!

;

Can you post the link to the FB group? I searched “Olin College Candidates’ Weekend 2014”, but I can’t find it either.

facebook.com/groups/591033624307630/

go to Facebook and add that to the end of the URL to get to the group

Not sure why you want to move to the FB group (that is not able to be found by searching). It is less likely that anyone who’s been through CW before is going to be hanging out there. Reading the threads about CW from the last year or two here is certainly helpful and presumably will continue to be useful going forward. Happy to answer questions here.

Should I be concerned if I haven’t yet recieved any sort of packet in the mail?

I didn’t receive a packet in the mail, but I’m pretty sure all the information you need can be found if you click Step 3 of Candidates’ Weekend RSVP in your Olin Portal. There are PDFs of travel information, recommended lodging, and transportation options. You do not need to finish Step 2 to access Step 3. Hope this helps!

My DD was invited to CW2 and I’ve got lots of questions. What is the dress code? Are jeans and tee shirts ok or should she wear nicer clothes? We live far away so she’ll arrive the Thurs before and stay at the Babson. Where"s a good place to eat dinner that night that’s not too expensive. She’s also looking for a roommate or two.

There is no dress code and many kids wear jeans and t-shirts. Some kids wear shirts that are, say, a step up from your typical T-shirt. She should wear what is comfortable for her. It is winter so I would recommend she have a sweatshirt or something (for indoors) in case she is a bit cold. And check the weather. You can see what other kids wear if you look at the pictures of last year’s CW at <a href=“Olin College of Engineering’s albums | Flickr”>http://www.■■■■■■■■■■/photos/olin/sets/</a>.</p>

Thanks for the flickr link, I got to see my son in a couple pics. He was at CW last year in his usual attire, jeans and T-shirt.

@m0m0f3 Thanks for your great response and the flickr link. If a picture’s worth a thousand words then hundreds of pics are worth millions of words.
