2014 Louie family foundation scholarship

Did anyone apply for this scholarship?

I did, but have heard nothing.

I sent mine in via certified mail (which requires a signature). Apparently nobody was there to sign for it and they didn’t care enough to go pick up at the post office, so it was returned to me. I emailed them and they said I could send it back, but it was nearly a month after a deadline so I’m assuming that I won’t win since they got it so late.

I looked on their website, and it appears winners were announced in July the past few years (or something like that - I looked a while ago) so I wouldn’t expect to hear anything for a while.

Anybody heard anything?

Looking at last year’s thread on this scholarship I don’t even know if it’s legitimate. Does anyone know anybody that has ever won this scholarship?

Heard back from them today - I won $3k.

@baileyj57 Congrats! How were you notified?

Thank you! I was notified via email.

Anyone else hear anything?

@baileyj57…so this is a legit scholarship? You did get the money?

@buckeyeinmd‌ I messaged her a while back and she said that she did get the money, but also, one of her parents was a veteran and that is mostly likely what you need to get the scholarship. That’s why most people don’t get a response. Good luck, I ended up not applying because it was geared more toward military families.

@passionforumiami. Thanks. Since I’m not a veteran guess I won’t add this to list for son to apply for next year

@buckeyeinmd‌ I applied to this this year, without a veteran parent (and therefore just so I don’t regret it in the future). Just wanted to let you know that if your son does apply, they’ve switched to online submissions so they do confirm receipt of the application.

@quijote…thanks. And good luck to you. He may still end up doing it. Right now I’m just trying to collect scholarships for him to apply to next year

@buckeyeinmd no problem, and thanks! Your son is very lucky to have someone else compiling a list for him, especially so early in the process.

@quijote, that’s because my older son didn’t apply for enough and I only have so much money so the more my kids can get the easier it is for me

Yes - I did get the money from them.

I’m not sure what they consider important criteria, but here is some info from my application - take it for what it’s worth.

 • My dad was a military veteran. In the miltary about 13 years.
 • I did have quite a bit of financial need. I used the provided space to describe my family's financial situation in addition to the required financial info
 • Neither of my parents earned a college degree
 • I do NOT have a disability
 • 3.9 unweighted GPA and 33 ACT score
 • I sent 3 recommendation letters, not just 2. My teachers did give me the opportunity to read them and they were all fantastic. Like the form suggested, none of them selected "truly exceptional" in every category and they didn't talk only about my positive qualities in the letter.
 • Anticipated major in engineering
 • My honors/awards were rather cookie cutter; nothing particularly outstanding (AP scholar, honor roll, essay contest winner). Same with activities and leadership - just sports and bit of volunteering. I didn't have a high school job so I left the employment section blank.
 • The essay topics last year were very different, but imo mine were awful. My essays for other scholarships were significantly better. I almost didn't submit the scholarship because I thought they were so bad.

So, that’s my application in a nutshell. So based off my experience, I’d say that honors/awards, activities, and essays are of minimal importance, while honest, descriptive letters of recommendation and meeting at least a couple of the “bonus criteria” (there may be extra importance to military affiliation, not really sure. I did meet 3 of the 4 so I can’t say with certainty if any of the 4 are “better” than the rest) are of greater importance.

So, take that for it’s worth, but that’s my experience with the Louie Foundation Scholarship.

Also, don’t send the application via certified mail. I sent mine that way and it was mailed back to me a month later because no one ever signed for it. When I got the envelope back in the mail (about 2 weeks after the scholarship deadline) I emailed the foundation. They said they had lots of problems with applications via certified mail and said they would still consider it if I resent it quickly.
