Congrats to both of you Moonpie.
I am right with you mayacollegeapps. Maybe later based on the FA package, and one waitlist that he wants to stay on.

@MizzBee DD needs to make the call based on what she has on hand and then see what shakes loose from the Wait/Alternate list. So far, one has given her 25% Merit Scholarship and it is my understanding the rest need to announce their FA by mid-April. Good Luck!!
Son’s decision just got a little easier. He got the call from one of our state schools that’s he’s getting full tuition scholarship for all 4 years!!!
wow, that sounds great @momworried
Awesome news @momworried Congrats
We do finally have a decision! D is going to the local school - wants to be close to home. She started turning down her other choices today. Once she makes up her mind, you can’t stop her - she already agreed to a lease on an apartment
@arisamp - not close enough to stay at home?
After agonizing week DS committed yesterday to our state school. He just couldn’t pass up so much money. He will be close to home but not close enough to live at home. He still has 5 top schools on his wait list so we will have to see how it plays out. Just curious, after April 30 will the wait listed schools see that he has a full scholarship or only which school he committed to?
Scholarships are not listed on the AMCAS national acceptance report which gets sent out to all med schools.
It has, however, been suggested that sometimes this info does get out through other unofficial means. (As in people in various different admission offices talk to each other. Med school admissions is a small world.)
@texaspg - we never did consider her living at home. We are just glad she is back in-state! And we can drive down to see her or she can drive home for the weekend when she wants!
Have a question about “books and supplies” charge. Some schools have $1300 and some $4000. What are the supplies? Could it be the stethoscope? I know some schools provide it free of charge.
I’m sure it varies from school to school, and your son will find out exactly what he needs to buy. A lot of the textbooks listed as required on the bookstore site D didn’t actually need. And they were given a stethoscope from the medical school alumni.
DD decided on USC Keck. Now to find the money to pay for it all.
@mayacollegeapps - Great school. A Nephew had a combined admission but moved back to Texas due to medical school costs although he had a nice scholarship during undergrad. They have scrapped the combined program after 2011.
@momworried - I was looking at Baylor costs and they had 5700 the first year dropping all the way down to 2000 or so second year to almost nothing for years 3 and 4. They start rotations after 18 months.
Books & supplies vary by school.
Kidlets did have some required textbooks they needed to buy, but don’t buy textbooks in advance until your kid figures out which ones he really needs. (I acquired some older edition…um…discards from my place of employment and donated these to my kids.)
Supplies can cover a range of things. Some of the most commonly required/needed–
med student exam kits (stethoscope, otoscope, ophthalmoscope)–while some med schools give stethoscopes as white coat gifts, kids’ll still need to buy the other scopes. (Buy kits from the med school bookstore as they often offer a student discount)
white coat with name embroidered on it and embroidered hospital patch
supplemental texts/materials (both kidlets bought lots of these!)
personal tablet/laptop (schools may require require a particular brand or OS so it’s compatible with the med school’s & hospital’s software)
note-taking software or notebooks/pens
photocopying (lots of this for class research and case studies)
test prep materials for Step 1 (UWorld/Kaplan, First Aid, QBank, Goijan)
personal scrubs (Kidlets each bought 2 sets–one to wear and one in the laundry then tossed both sets once Anatomy was over because they get pretty stained and disgusting)
home internet access
lemon or eucalyptus scented shampoo and soap to get the smell of formaldehyde out of hair & skin
replacement clothing for those that will get ruined in anatomy lab (fat stains everything and will migrate even through double layer of gloves and protective outer layer garments)
Other items–needlestick insurance, disability insurance, library user fee
Son just got off the wait list from one of his top choices with a full scholarship!
Wow, congratulations @momworried
Does anyone know how the wait list acceptances work? Do you decline the original acceptance you’re holding before accepting the wait list one. Or can you accept and then decline the original?
Once your son officially accepts the waitlist offer , he must formally withdraw (via email) from his other acceptance the same day.
Best wishes for all…such great news!
