2015-16 Med School Applicants and their Parents

Well, it’s official. He took the wait list spot. I’m happy for him and sad at the same time. He will be so far from home. ! I was looking forward having him close if he went to our state school. And even though he’s been away at school for last 4 years, now it feels like he’s truly moving out. He does want to come back to NY area for residency. Hopefully that works out.

After really long cycle. 30 schools 5 invites and 3WL’s he finally was accepted to the place he always wanted to be. This is literally the happiest day of my life. I cant stop crying! Sometimes it doesnt come fast or easy but when it does it makes it that much sweeter!

Congratulations @GCmom415

@GCmom415, you made me teared up and my DS is only a second year premed :-S So happy for you!

Thank you! Good luck to your son!!

As I’ve said all along, it only takes one “yes” to make a doctor.

Congratulations to everyone who got their yes.

@GCmom415 I am sooooo happy for you and your son! Congratulations!!! Now you can drink wine for celebration purposes! lol

@mom2collegekids Thanks!! You know that!! Time to celebrate! Just an FYI if it wasnt mentioned before I saw a great gift idea on esty. Its a personalized coat hanger for your son or daughters first white coat!!!

So after staying on waitlists and procrastinating for months, DS is finally committing to his state school. Hopefully he will confirm that he will not be living out of his car this week. Good luck to all that made it through and patience is wished for those going through it now.

Official first day of school was yesterday for D. They had a small family welcome gathering where the deans presented data about the school and the curriculum they are going to go through. D is settling into her apartment - from here on, it should be full speed ahead! White coat ceremony is not until next month…

@arisamp - congratulations! Why is the white coat ceremony a month after first day of classes? Most schools do it at the end of orientation and before 1st day of classes.

@texaspg - no idea. The white coat is actually about six week into the program. I had looked and this was not the only school that did this - D had another school on her list of acceptances where the white coat was not until early October!

They apparently suggest asking a mentor to cloak you at the ceremony - D emailed her mentor (she has shadowed him quite a bit over the years) and despite the fact that the ceremony is on a working day and quite a distance away, he has agreed to come do it! She was thrilled!

Son’s school started a month ago. He’s sooo busy. Barely has any time to speak to us. It’s a small class so I think kids bonded right away.

@momworried - wow. I didn’t know anyone started in early July.

We are moving D to her new apartment today and she starts orientation on Monday. We will go back for the white coat ceremony on Friday. She will be less than 2 hours away, this is the closest she’s been since she graduated high school 5 years ago.

White Coat ceremony was this past weekend and classes started Monday! All pretty exciting! Good luck to everyones sons and daughters here!

Daughters white coat ceremony was yesterday… Truly a moving experience. The class ended the ceremony with Hippocratic oath, and they will end their graduation the same way in 4 years. One of my best days of my life … Classes start Monday! But studying started today!

Good luck to all your sons and daughters. D begins M2 year this week. Last year was hard but more ups than downs. And classmates do become very close.

Not much to do as parents but to lend moral support. But for those of you that live close, the most appreciated thing we did was to buy groceries and other supplies and bring them to her at the end of a block during study/exam week. Going to the store was a low priority, so her cupboards would be pretty bare. It was nice to be able to help her out and save her some precious study time.

D had whitecoat ceremony on Friday. Classes start tomorrow.

The school had a very good presentation for parents and partners for a whole morning. We came away wondering how so many students are able to stay on while witnessing life and death situations and knowing that people do die and they can’t always help. The school was prepping us for times when the kids will get really unhappy or even depressed.

D came home for the night on Saturday - basically to say bye to her brother headed off to college this weekend. We had friends over for lunch - she stayed for lunch and left with boxes of leftovers. And some groceries  Apparently, they have take-home quizzes/tests every weekend - she made sure to work on Saturday, finish these quizzes and then come home, so she could relax when she was home. First full week of classes done, she said it looks like they take a typical college semester class and cover it in one week ! Lots of work!
