I didn’t find a recent thread dealing with extracurriculars as a whole, so I’m making one. Post your ECs, advice, accomplishments, etc.
Okay, I’ll start with some advice. EC’s are incredibly important for admissions to the top colleges in the US and I think this is not widely understood. My advice is that you think about how you spend your summers beginning freshman year in high school and that pack them with academic enrichment and internships by spending each January actively planning out the next summers activities with a multi-year roadmap. Take community college courses, get a job, go out and ask some company or organization to allow you to contribute in some meaningful capacity. When you look at the students who get admitted to MIT, Harvard or Stanford in many cases they have packed a full years worth of academics into their summers going above and beyond what their high school offers. This is what is meant by intellectual curiosity. For school year EC’s be very selective about what clubs you join but play an active role in these clubs. Get elected to an officer position. Lead a chartity drive. Create a club and get fellow students to join. Compete and win at the state, national or international level. It might seem somewhat overly methodical to plan out summers and ECs over the course of high school but students don’t get into MIT, Harvard or Stanford based on serendipity or dumb luck nor do these EC opportunities get handed to them on a silver platter
I’ll offer some advice and mention my own ECs, I suppose. Don’t do exracurriculars just for the sake of looking good to college. Do them because they interest you or you want to see what you enjoy doing. I wouldn’t go so far to say you should pack your academic year and summer full of extracurriculars–leave some time to have a social life and relax a bit! When you do participate in ECs, try your best to get a leadership position or something in them. A little off topic, but try to keep active during the school year too (do a sport or try to go to the gym/go for a run a few times per week.)
My extracurricars are a few clubs (academic team, Science Olympiad, and Spanish club), a sport, and an out-of school activity where I go and write reviews for high school theatre performances. t’s not much (probably) compared to other people on CC, but I feel the important thing is that I enjoy my ECs.
My EC’s include:
Spanish Honor Society
Science National Honor Society
SNAP( its a Spanish club)
Varsity Soccer
AFJROTC
and History club
My ECs are
FCCLA
Teen Court
NHS
Salsa dancing
Not much compared to people on here, but I adore my ECs, and spend a lot of time in them. I love the communities that I’ve formed and the connections I’ve made to different people. Plus, the positions I hold in each of these are meaningful and I dedicate time to them.
Nothing
Usually the lead in two theatrical performances a year. This Dec I will be Scrooge.

My ECs are:

Don’t do things just for your resume. Then you are often unenthusiastic and that can annoy other people who really care. I have been involved in class government/ student council for all 4 years. I am currently the secretary of executive board and the co-president of the National Honor society.
Mine are:
Police Explorers
Teen Court
I told a guy this earlier: Don’t do high school for college.
On the other hand, I’m going to write a Science Olympiad test for Invitationals… woot
For ECs I do…
Concert Band
Jazz Band
Wind Ensemble
Youth Development/Community Service Group
Executive of above group
It’s not like a billion ECs and groups, but I’m heavily involved in all of the groups so I don’t want to overextend myself as I’m also in all Honors/AP classes.
Don’t do ECs to pad your resume if you don’t like them or find no interest int hem, only do them if you want to.
My ECs:
French Club
Student Council
Science Olympiad
Key Club(this is the only club on list that feels like it’s there for resume padding, it’s so broken at my school)
HOSA
Art Club
Academic Team
Medical Explorers
Piano Lessons
I know they’re a bit all over the place, but so am I
I’m only a sophmore, so I may take some clubs off in the clubs I’m less enthusiastic about, and try out for officer positions in the clubs I love.
My ECs:
Debate team
Academic team
Head of programming for my school’s robotics team
Leo club (community service)
Science league
Math league
Tennis (in the spring)
Boy scouts
Only a sophomore, but I plan on joining my school’s science, math, English, and national honor societies.
@Phantomlink where do you do police explorer at?
@Soccerchic24 At your local police department if they offer it.
How is it?
Mine are
Student government (house captain - my school has a house system a lot like Harry Potter, which is pretty great)
Junior Classical League (president)
Philosophy club (vice president)
National Honor Society
Theatre
Fresh/soph year I was in Yearbook, Soph year I was in show choir. Junior year now I am in FHA for the 2nd year and Key Club for the 3rd year. I also volunteered at Boys & Girls club quite a bit last year. I am interested in Menagerie but my school doesn’t do much with it. A lot of our clubs are sports based which I suck at.
@gm0724 How is menagerie an extracurricular? I don’t mean to sound rude, but I am just intrigued by its being something one could undertake as a hobby.
