As of now my extracurricular seem quite scattered. I am currently a freshmen who is taking the most challenging courses that could be taking. My extracurriculars as of now consist of Model UN, Orchestra, Random Volunteer clubs, science clubs, and the business club. I have a genuine interest in Economics/Finance(I know quite odd). Also I’m trying to create a spike that the top colleges clearly want. In college I plan to major in Econ or Finance in the future. So now I am in need of some ECs examples that could possibly pertain to my interest/future major.
PS: I was also thinking of having an internship over the summer but I don’t know if the people at accounting firms want a 15 year old in there office.
My feeling on extracurriculars is to do what you want to do. If you find your ECs interesting, then you are more likely to do them well. You are for example more likely to come up with creative ways to make the group (whatever the group is) work better. If you are in a competitive event, you are more likely to win prizes or become captain if you like what you are doing.
You are a freshman. Your ECs are supposed to be scattered. Figure out what you like to do, and do more of it. Forget about what universities want you do to. Figure out what you want you to do.
I am not sure if it is possible to “optimize” your ECs. However, this approach did work for me and seemed to also work for my daughters.
9th grade is too early to obsess and you’re off to a good start. But you don’t tell us the level of colleges you may apply to. Then again, it’s too early to fix on that, with little record.
You want to cover your bases.
You mention the “spike that the top colleges clearly want” and imo that’s can be a misunderstanding. Top colleges want the right depth and breadth. And rather than “random vol clubs,” which often just dart in and out of someplace they “help,” try looking for the one or two you can seriously commit to. Next year is fine to start that.
Miles to go.
Your ECs are for you and your development as a person. They are where you learn and do stuff which is not part of the classroom. Doing ECs to impress colleges is a losing proposition, since you will never be as good at any EC you do for this reason as somebody who does it because that is what interests them.
You should choose your classes and your ECs based on what you want to accomplish in HS, not based on what you think that college AO will want to see on an application, three years from now. When you graduate high school, you want to be in a position in which you can honestly say that your satisfaction with your accomplishments over high school is not affected by the college which you will attend.
College is not a prize for taking the “right” classes, and doing the “right” ECs in high school.
Your extracurriculars are extremely impressive, so I wouldn’t worry about anything like an internship yet. However, I do know that many colleges like to see work experience, even if it is a simple job. Try to find something next summer that will give you some experience in this area - and can be fun!
