2015 Best Colleges Preview: Top 10 Public Universities

Thanks for the link and for the fact not a single word of Ivy was memtioned. :D

Guess our “beloved” Nitany Lions… I am from PA… have fallen out of favor this year…to UCSB. Most probably Penn State will go down in the overall National Rankings as well…#37 last year.

The University of Casual Sex and Beer is all grown up. :)

PSU should be ahead of UCSB, UCSD, and UCSD. Rankings are majorly flaw

Well, I’d replace UCD & UCSB with UW-Wisconsin and UT-Austin. Pick one from UCSD/UIUC/IU/PU/UDub.

But this is USNews, so really, who cares.

Here on CC, probably lots of people.

UCSD is legit. It’s problem is that it’s overshadowed by Berkeley and UCLA. Any other state would be thrilled to have it as a flagship public school. I am surprised at UCD and UCSB being on the list, although I can easily see them being in the top 15 or so.

When I lived in Seattle in the late 80’s, UW had a fantastic reputation and viewed itself as one of the top four publics, along with Berkeley, North Carolina and Michigan. What the heck happened?

Looks like the only change(in the top 10) is PSU dropping out (it was 8 last year) and UCSB moving up (last year it was 11th).

UW is ranked just outside of the top 10 publics. No complaints with UCSD’s ranking, but I wonder what’s putting UCD and UCSB into the top 10 (ahead of UIUC, UW-Madison, etc.). I’m thinking it’s “Undergraduate academic reputation” (survey data that makes up 22% of the ranking). Both are excellent schools, but in Faculty resources (20 percent), Retention (22.5 percent), and Student selectivity (12.5 percent), the other schools are just a bit better.

“UCSD is legit. It’s problem is that it’s overshadowed by Berkeley and UCLA. Any other state would be thrilled to have it as a flagship public school.”

It would be a step down in Michigan. ;-)

“When I lived in Seattle in the late 80’s, UW had a fantastic reputation and viewed itself as one of the top four publics, along with Berkeley, North Carolina and Michigan. What the heck happened?”

The top four have been considered UCB, Michigan, UCLA, and UVA for decades.

Indeed. Of course, it still has a ways to go to catch up with the University of Constantly Bragging!

U Washington is a top 5 public in both the AWRU ranking (along with Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, and Michigan) and the THES ranking (along with Berkeley, UCLA, Michigan, and UT Austin). It seems like it’s doing just fine.

“The top four have been considered UCB, Michigan, UCLA, and UVA for decades.”

UNC-CH objects.

It really depends on what coast you are on (if any) and whether you value business over engineering, liberal arts over research, etc. or vice versa, though.

Come on. If there’s anything hanging out on CC should teach people, it’s that there’s no accepted consensus on any ranking.
