What classes would be good to take before this new MCAT? Is it much different from the older one?

Well i got the answer to my own question from my premed advisor and I decided to put it up here for anyone who wants to read.

prior to 2015 mcat
-basicaly pre med requirements
-Stats

-Cell biology
-animal physiology
-genetics
-microbiology

-biochemistry

all with different degrees of importance. they are grouped from most to least important

and the 2015 and beyond mcat
-basic prereqs
-Biochemistry(more emphasized)
-cell biology(also more emphasized)
-statistics

-animal physiology
-genetics
-microbiology

these classes you will need to know but dont neccessarily need to take the class for it
-general psychology
-introduction to sociology

the new MCAT will definitely be a lot harder

Some schools are now requiring the Biochemistry, Intro to Psych and Intro to Sociology for class of 2015 applicants. I advise you check school websites to be safe as some will have different requirements.

Totally uninformed parent here. I have a couple of questions.

If the 2015 MCAT is the new version, why would those applying to med school for 2015 need the new classes that Mizzbee listed above if they will be under the present MCAT.

I ask because my DS will finish undergrad in 2015 and plans to go to med school. He will be applying to med schools to start in fall of 2015–does that put him under the old MCAT test, but the new Med school course requirements?

I really need to get smart on this stuff. Thanks

IUSM (Indiana University) is now requiring the classes for those matriculating from the 2014 application cycle, even though those subjects are not yet covered on the MCAT. That is why I said to check the individual schools. While it makes no sense to me either, I am glad to know it as it is our in-state option.

I am trying to remember which other school changed. DS has a few years to go, but he spoke to his advisor and she mentioned more than one name. My poor DS goes to a school without a sociology department so they are scrambling to come up with a solution right now, as all their pre-med students are encouraged to apply to IUSM due to their good relationship with the school.

Thread is about the mcat. Not what med schools require

The new 2015 MCAT will be required for all applicants who will begin medical school in fal 2017 or later. Those applying to start in 2016 before then will be able to use scores from either version of the exam. Those applying for fall 2015 admission will take the old version.

As for your son needing to take psych, soc, biochem, etc, VAMom–this is all school dependent. Your son will need to be in compliance with all school-specific pre-reqs in order to gain admission. He needs to check the admission websites of any and all medical schools he thinks he might be applying to (or buy access to the MSAR) to see what coursework they require. Admission requirements can and do vary by school.
