2015 Spring Semester Parent's Discussion

How frightening is this? One of the animals from the football team accused of rape on campus last June says in court:
“We was like brothers…”, and “…I didn’t want nothing bad to happen to no one…”!!!
Is THIS the caliber of “student” that top colleges are willing to admit just because he can toss a ball???
Truly a disgrace, and an utter travesty for our top schools. Disgusting, really.

I didn’t expect to see Vanderbilt cancelled class today! Maybe due to icy road condition?
Hope all the students are safely studying indoors.

I’m told that cancelling classes is a rare occurance. But last year, the first day of classes were cancelled due to snow and ice as well as the inability of students to return from winter break due to all the flight cancellations.

It has definitely been a change for my California son who only saw snow when we went to the mountains to ski and the temperature drop to just above freezing on a couple of days during the winter.

It’s crazy because I was just in Nashville the weekend before last and we sat in the beautiful sun and watched a Vandy baseball practice on Saturday afternoon. It was 66 degrees!

Nashville has terrible road conditions today. D works for one of the largest TN employers and she was allowed to take a vacation day and stay home. Her grad class which meets on Monday afternoons was cancelled, as well. So glad she isn’t driving. S was supposed to fly into Nashville later tonight and drive back home. I originally thought his biggest problem would be getting here as we have 10-12 inches of snow, but it became apparent over the morning that his biggest problem would be getting car de-iced and out of BNA & Nashville. Fortunately, flight is cancelled and he is rebooked for Wednesday morning.

Many Nashvillians do not know how to drive in ice & snow. When D moved to Nashville in February of 2011, her dad took her and her belongings down in the rented truck, rather than have her drive behind him since we it was a bad weather day. He brought her back that evening after unloading with S’s assistance (S was at VU Law at the time) and she took her car back two days later. She said there were many abandoned cars all over West End Avenue on their move-in day going out towards her apartment & on toWhite Bridge Road (where the closest Target is).

Just spoke with DD–she enjoyed the day off from school and thinks they might even cancel classes tomorrow since still very icy (wonders if profs can safely get to campus tomorrow). 2VU0609 is correct that many Nashvillians do not know how to drive in the snow and if it is like my Southern city, the city doesn’t even own many plows to clear the roads. The metro Nashville public schools have already cancelled class for Tuesday. Being a mom, I was worried that she would have anything to eat but D assures me that the major cafeterias are all open on campus, not sure what poor staff members had to brave the weather to get to campus to make sure our students are fed.

Classes cancelled for a second day! The mayor is telling people not to get out today.

The general vibe on campus (from what I can tell) is that much of this week is going to get cancelled. We’re supposed to have negative temperatures around Wednesday or Thursday, and some more snow. Not that I’m complaining, but I am wondering what they’re going to do about my Thursday Calc exam! Has anyone’s DD or DS experienced this before?

If the roads improve today, I bet you will have classes tomorrow. The key is getting your profs to campus, not the temperatures. I’m watching the temps because I’m hoping S’s flight into Nashville tomorrow morning works out and that he can get into his car through the ice build-up. D’s fiancee broke an ice scraper yesterday clearing their cars in the afternoon, so that’s a real concern since I know S’s winter coat is in his car and not with him. Afternoon temps today are supposed to hit 30 and roads will respond to melting agents if you can get temps of 28 or above. I’m not too far away and we have sunshine. I’m assuming Nashville has the same, so some road improvement should occur with sunshine and salt/brine solution.

Right now the Weather Channel is forcasting a high of 29 with the present temperature only 25. The question is can it warm up enough to clear the roads of the ice before the main thrust of the artic blast hits. The forecast is for it to stay below freezing until Thursday with lows in the negative numbers the next two day.

I sure am hoping it warms up before we arrive next Wednesday.

I’m more than a little concerned about my safety around campus. I’m hardly afraid of some cold and snow, but I’m out here about to break my neck with this ice. They salted some areas, but not nearly everywhere, and often areas that are usually heavily-trafficked have been left icy. Not to mention the number of tree limbs down.

DS and his buddies have been out and walking around the campus. In our short conversation, he didn’t mention about difficulty in walking in the snow/ice. I sure hope he is being careful. Ice is a lot worse than snow.

I spoke with D about an hour ago and she and her fiancee were headed out on a few errands. She said the sun was shining enough to melt ice off cars and the streets seemed improved. Hopefully, that will be the case for campus grounds and the maintenance staff will get some results this afternoon. It’s truly a time to break out the Bean boots/shoes and to tread carefully. Good luck, SusieAnne - with both the test and the logistics of getting to class:)

My DD fell on campus today. She’s sporting a nice bruise on her side. Poor FL girl has never seen ice!

poor kid!

Ouch! I’ve had some close calls, but luckily no falls yet! That said, my friends have learned to give me a wide berth, as I tend to grab for them in a moment of panic, haha!

@yellowgranite56, hope she is feeling better today. Unless she’s a senior and heading back south again, she may want to invest in some Bean boots. I saw a picture of a large tree felled by ice in front of Owen on Vandy’s instagram account. I wonder how many trees this event took out. Probably not as many trees as falling students, though.

Looks as if Nashville is headed for lots of warming and melting by the weekend and don’t they just have one more week until spring break? I always thought their spring break was awfully early.

It’s definitely a commonly-held sentiment that our breaks are weirdly early, especially on Commons. All of my friends back home are still in school when I come home, and get out as soon as I leave.

It’s good to know that Nashville is warming back up. How are snow days handled in college? I am guessing that they don’t have to make up for snow day, right?

@sadieshadow‌ - I have a student that lives in McGill. It’s a great fit for him, so he loves it. feel free to PM me.
