2015 Verification

I have to do the 2015 Verification, when is this due? Is it a sign of acceptance? Why would I be asked to verify if I am rejected?

What is a 2015 Verification?

It could. I’ve done three verifications for my son and they are all for colleges that he was admitted to. If it does then there would be a positive to asking to be verified. It’s a pain. When it’s due will depend on your notification. There should be instructions that tell you what you need to do to verify your financial information (documents to submit and so forth) and the time frame should be somewhere with the instructions.Vanderbilt has not requested verfication from my S yet.

@neonpinklime, what is a verification? What does the 2015 mean? Did the OP mean 2014 for this year?

Verification is a process to verify your financial data. Once a school receives your FAFSA, they select (they claim randomly select) a number of applicants to go through “verification.” The email or snail mail letter will give you instructions to login and see what documents you must submit. One of the documents is almost always a “verification statement” in which the parent and student must verify how many live in the household, who is currently enrolled in college, whether the student was employed in 2013 and whether they filed a tax return, whether the parents filed a tax return and if so whether data retrieval was used when submitting the fafsa. I’ve also had to submit w2’s of employment. And they also request an “irs tax return transcript” if you did not use data retrieval on the fafsa.

But everyone else that got this request do please note that being asked for Federal Verification is not necessarily the hint that you have gotten in or vice versa. I am not asked for Federal Verification 2015 (It is not on my online account checklist) and I still got in. So don’t worry if you were not asked about it, it could just mean nothing.

@Daddio3, yes that 2015 is probably a typo. It could be 2013 verification as it is to verify 2013 financial information but it could also be called 2014 verification because it’s happening in 2014. Our family doesn’t make much money and my son will probably be getting a lot of need-based aid, so even though they say it’s random I’m thinking they may keep picking him to be verified because they want to make sure his need is justified. Just a guess on my part. It could be that he was RANDOMLY selected at three different schools.

Is this the same as the IDOC documentation that is done through the college board?

No it’s different. But that reminds me. Wasn’t vanderbilt an IDOC school? I called them after I submitted the College Board Profile (CSS) application and asked if they needed a copy of my 1040 via IDOC because there are codes at the bottom of my receipt that indicated that Vandy used IDOC for tax returns. The woman I spoke to in financial aid said that they do request documents in IDOC and they would be requested from applicants soon. We never got a request and when I login to my son’s myappvu account and look at his financial aid it says they have his CSS profile and his Fafsa and there’s no other requests. Did anyone get a request to submit their tax return via IDOC?

AHHH OMG! I just logged into my S’s myappvu and under financial aid it says “2015 Verification” . And under that it says they need docs for: “Asset Verification-Dependent,” “Federal Verification-Dependent” “Parent 2013 Tax Transcript” “Student 2013 Tax Transcript” hahaha. I guess we just haven’t gotten the letter about it yeat. Well here comes doing it for college number FOUR.

@neonpinklime … the #'s I originally submitted through FASFA were estimates. As soon as we filed for 2013, I edited the numbers on FASFA … it was then that I received a request through IDOC for our tax return to be sent.

KaMaMom what is an IDOC request like? Is it an email from College Board IDOC saying vandy asks you to submit your tax return?

I had called the FA office with questions and this is what they told me:

Once your 2013 Federal tax return is final, you will need to go back online and make the required corrections to the original “estimated” figures on her FAFSA. This will generate a new FAFSA to us showing the actual tax return figures.
Then we will submit her name to the IDOC service through College Board (probably not until the entire freshman class has been admitted) and they will then send you an email on how to submit your tax return to their service. Once they receive your return, they will forward us an electronic copy so that we can finalize her financial aid package.

Note that while they say I wouldn’t receive anything from IDOC until after the 2018 class was fully admitted, I corrected the FASFA online on 2/26 and received the email from IDOC on 2/27.

Hope this helps!

Oh! Here’s part of what the IDOC email said:

This message contains important information about the next steps you and your family must take to complete the 2014-15 financial aid application process.

The financial aid office at one or more of your college(s) or scholarship program(s) collects additional documents, such as federal tax returns, from students and their families through the College Board’s Institutional Documentation Service (IDOC).

It then lists the steps to take to log into the IDOC website.

Thanks for the detail. I filed my fafsa with estimates but then returned to update it using the data-retrieval tool which automatically fills in figures using your filed 1040. What they told you makes sense to me because the CSS profile says (this is at the bottom of the acknowledgment page) that Vanderbilt University is an “H” for additional requirements. An “H” is “This college participates in the College Board’s Institutional Documentation Serived IDOC. In early February the student will be notified of where and how to submit his or her 2013 tax forms. Please do not mail 2013 tax forms directly to this college.” This is why I called them because my S never got the IDOC request that all applicants should get in February. The woman I spoke to said that they would get them soon. Unfortunately for me, the verification process is more. But hey, I’m happy to do whatever they need me to do so that my S can apply for financial aid.

Why would they make someone rejected do this work?

I hope you’re right because it would mean my S is in too. Thanks for the “heads up” to check his myappvu financial aid for the changes.

I want to clarify that my daughter was accepted ED1.

Here’s a definition of verification: Verification

Some students may be selected for verification by the Department of Education. SFS is required to collect specific information to complete verification in addition to those items listed under Application Requirements. In almost all cases, students must submit an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Tax Return Transcript to verify income or successfully upload tax information using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool in FAFSA on the Web. For more information about verification, including instructions for obtaining a Tax Return Transcript or using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, click here.

@neonpinklime do you feel it’s a positive sign or coincidence
