2016 Honors College Applicant Pool

The Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College received 1,318 applications by its deadline, 23% more than the previous record set last year. The application pool represents 34 states and 3 foreign countries. Admissions decisions should be out to students by late February.

Congratulations to those who have already been accepted through their Early Action application process! This is a great time to make a visit to the university if you haven’t already!

My daughter sent her application for the Honors College but has a small chance of getting in as her weighted grades are not above a 3.5 yet she did receive a Provost Scholar letter. She wants to major in Journalism which I am not sure is even part of the Honors college. Do you know how strong the Journalism and Creative Writing majors are from Ole Miss. We have not received much financial aid so we are trying to figure it out.

Ole Miss has a very good journalism school. They moved the campus newspaper out of the j-school building some years ago, and it has suffered greatly as a result. Not sure why they did this.

All academic programs are part of the Honors College @ocmom2. So, Journalism majors are part of the Honors College. All of the student media groups (newspaper, yearbook, radio, TV station) were converged into one area in Bishop Hall. They did this so that they could provide more space. The students were in favor of the decision.

@collegeguider The students shouldn’t have had to move to Bishop Hall to have space. Traditionally the DM had plenty of space in Farley, and they shouldn’t have been squeezed out during the building addition. Students who are putting out a newspaper ought to be able to walk down a hallway or up a flight of stairs and consult with a journalism professor; that’s what they are there for.

It is my belief from the outside looking in that the paper suffers from a lack of daily interaction as the paper is being published. And for what it’s worth, I have never heard of the journalism faculty interfering with the DM when it was in Farley. They were just there to help, if needed.

@EarlVanDorn As I’m sure you know, the university has been growing in size for many years. When that happens, more space is needed. Farley Hall, at the time, wasn’t necessarily the most conducive to the advances in technology that our student media outlets needed. The renovated Farley Hall is great as well! If you haven’t been to campus recently, I hope you’ll visit and see the new space. It’s amazing. The DM has an advisor who is a faculty member so they do get that support. Who mentioned that the faculty interfered with the DM? I can say all of this because I was involved with the DM and the Yearbook when the convergence happened. I was on the DM Editorial Board and served as a section editor for the yearbook for two years. I loved the new space much better than Farley as did many of my colleagues.

Nobody said that the faculty interfered. I just thought maybe you might have had that idea as being a good reason for not being in Farley. My understanding is that when Ed Meek gave them a sack of money for the journalism school one of the conditions was that the DM was to at some point be brought back to Farley. I certainly think it ought to be in Farley.

It looks like Honors College acceptances are going out so best of luck to those who applied!!
