Summer Activities:“What’s Your Problem?” Math camp at Texas Tech, NASA High School Aerospace Scholars, Undergrads Ivy League Project (College Tours Program)
Essays: First essay I would say 9/10, talked about the restrictive environment I grew up in and how I am shaped by my culture. Second Essay 8/10, talked about the community I live in and what is good/bad about it. Princeton Supplement Essay 10/10, talked about my godfather and how his life and death really changed my life.
Teacher Recommendations: Both 10/10, my APUSH teacher had me for two years and got to know me in and out of the class, she wrote about how I motivated her to be a better teacher. My calculus teacher had me junior year and this year. I was the only junior in his class last year so he had a lot to say about me.
Counselor Rec: 8/10 I’ve only known her since the second semester of my junior year but I talked to her a lot before applying.

Other

State (if domestic applicant): Texas (El Paso)
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Hispanic (Mexican)
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: ~50,000
Assets: N/A
Property: House and car?
Extenuating Circumstances: Sister is going to medical school so it will be very expensive. My mom has some high school and was born in Mexico City, she moved here to raise our family.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Dad went to stanford

Why you think you were matched/not matched and general comments: My numbers are pretty good and I’ve done a lot of community service. My essays really showed my culture and how I have tried to achieve more than what is expected in El Paso. The letters of rec were probably the best part because the teachers I asked were super close with me.
Good luck to everyone wherever you end up. If you did not get matched, there’s still a high chance you get in to a college partner so keep the grind going!

Subjective:

*Extracurriculars: Varsity Tennis (captain), NHS, Math Honor Society (President), Quiz Bowl, National Society of High School Scholars
*Job/Work Experience: Research Assistant at a science camp where I had to design experiments for middle schoolers, help them carry it out, and help them write research papers (Summer of 2016)
Retail Associate at a Department Store…I was working about 26 hours/week over the summer, but I don’t work as many hours since school has started. Still on average about 20 hours/week (July 2017-present)

*Volunteer/Community service: Volunteering through NHS (Operation Christmas Child, events, etc.), I tutor student’s failing classes in math 1.5 hours/week, student ambassador by leading tours/talking about my school
*Summer Activities: Working mostly
*Essays: I feel that both of my essays were a strong 10/10, if not very high. I love writing narratives, so I figured out a way to write all of my essays in a narrative-like style to play on my strengths. My bio was about a few defining moments in my life… I began describing myself in kindergarten and how we had to move into federal subsidized housing. I talked about being ashamed of that fact and how my grandparents lifted me out of that rut…I then went on to describe a tragedy that happened this summer that involved the sudden death of my grandfather and how it effected me/my family. My other essay was the ethical dilemma, which was about dealing with a close family member’s addiction. Throughout the essay I compared it to a “destructive storm” and continued the metaphor throughout…ending was very strong.
Teacher Recommendations: I didn’t see any of my teacher rec’s, but I would guess that the one from my AP Chem teacher would be 7/10. I did very well in the class, but my AP score didn’t reflect that, so I feel that he might’ve had that in mind while writing my rec. 9/10 for the one from my BC Calc/Multi teacher, she knew what happened over the summer and I managed to maintain an A both semesters of my BC calc class (it was an accelerated course with AB and BC content in one year, so it was hard to do so).

Counselor Rec: 10/10, I was able to read it and it was very thoughtful and definitely highlighted my strengths and leadership.

Other:

State (if domestic applicant): VA
School Type: I attend two schools, a regular public school for half the day and a Governor’s School that specializes in science, math, and technology for the other half.
Ethnicity: Black
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: <20,000, EFC was 0
Assets: 0
Property: 0
Extenuating Circumstances: dealing with family members suffering from addiction, main contributor in household facing jail time (pending), poor
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): (black) woman in STEM, first gen university students, attend a governor’s school, valedictorian while playing sports/working, etc

Why you think you were matched/not matched and general comments: I feel that I was matched because I take my academics very seriously (shown by GPA/grades) and had strong/creative essays. I do a lot of research projects since I attend a Governor’s school and have won regional awards/mentored at a lab, so I feel that was important since I want to pursue STEM. I feel very blessed for the opportunity and congratulations to everyone else who matched/was named a finalist! Hope to see any fellow Blue Devils soon!

SUBJECTIVE:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): National Honor Society (Secretary of Education), Latino Culture Club (Co-Founder, Treasurer), buildOn, Congress of Communities Youth Council, Congress of Communities Board of Directors, Focus on Freshmen Tutoring Service (Educational Liaison)

Job/Work Experience: Summer before 11th worked as a teaching assistant at the Wayne State University Math Corps program, summer before 12th worked at a research program at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor.

Volunteer/Community service: 100 hours with buildOn doing a bunch of little service projects around Detroit, tutoring 2 hours every week with Focus on Freshmen, and monthly community service projects with NHS.

Summer Activities: Same as my work experience lol.

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Personal Essay: 10/10 -
I chose the “ethical dilemma” prompt, and I talked about the differences between myself and the 4 other kids at the research program (super selective) in terms of our socioeconomic backgrounds and how that my significantly lower SAT scores (1380 at the time of applying) served to cause them to belittle me. The issue was whether to simply accept the judgement and being passed off as a “token Latino kid from Detroit,” or to stand up for myself and worsen the relationship between us and, in essence, between our different background groups. I then talked about how, instead, I proved to them that I was an effective worker and friend, and through the bond that I created with them, I was able to help rid them of their preconceived ideas of people like me, as well as evoke a better understanding between our background groups (idk if that makes sense I’m summarizing).
Supplemental Essays: 8/10 -
None of them were as well written as my personal essay, but they all tied together without talking about the same thing. For the prompt asking to “talk about an educational thing that interests you,” I talked about the actual workload of the research program (that way, I cover both the social and technical aspects of my experience). I used my other essays to emphasize my value of education and the things that I have done to promote it (i.e. created a college workshop, my breakthrough with my students at Math Corps, etc.). Also, I used my “write a letter to your future roommate” essay to emphasize my value of culture, as well as cultural awareness, and I tried to include humor in the essay to show a bit of individuality without overdoing it.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

I NEVER ACTUALLY GOT TO READ ANY OF MY RECOMMENDATIONS
Teacher Rec #1: Probably a 9/10, written by my current Calc BC who was also my geometry teacher and Pre-Calc teacher, so I’m assuming he got to know me well enough over the years to rock the recommendation letter.
Teacher Rec #2: Probably a 7/10, written by my 10th grade Chem teacher/11th grade Physics teacher, he is a very chill guy so I wouldn’t expect his writing to be superb or moving, but maybe his “chillness” contributed to the recommendation haha. I believe that my teacher rec’s were probably valued highly because these were teachers that I had for multiple years.
Counselor Rec: Probably 10/10, I am one of her only students who meets with her fairly often and she loves me, I let her read my personal essay and I’ve pretty much told her my life story so I know she was able to come through with the letter lol.
Additional Rec: Probably 9/10, written by Professor P.C. Ku at EECS department at UMich, he was my advisor at the research program and he was a very nice guy and extremely smart, I’m sure he had some great things to say. Plus, he is a somewhat well-known professor, so the name itself adds to the recommendation.
Interview: N/A

OTHER:

Intended Major: Computer Science
State (if domestic applicant): Michigan
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Latino
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: $50000
Assets: uhhh none I think
Property: just our house which is like $10k
Extenuating Circumstances: N/A
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First generation college student, child of immigrants, lived in Detroit my whole life, maybe my sister currently attending Stanford (I mentioned it in one of the short 50-word questions) helped me out.

Why you think you were matched and general comments:

My essays really tied together as a whole, I managed to cover the various perspectives of a single event to really get the reader invested in my experience, and I made the value of education the theme in most of my essays without telling the same story in each one (one about Math Corps, another about Southwest CODE, etc.). My standardized test scores were alright, definitely not as good as some other applicants, but I believe me going to Detroit Public Schools gives me a bit of leniency lol. I guess it really depended on the essays for me.

  • Summer Activities: Volunteering in organizations listed above.
  • Essays: 9/10 Biographical I talked about overcoming family history to set a better example for the future. 9/10 I talked about the difficulties I faced with my Eagle Project and why I persevered. 10/10 Rice short answers: I've wanted to attend Rice since my grandfather took me to a baseball game there
about 13 years ago; I still have the ticket to the game and wrote about what the school means to me.
  • Teacher Recommendations: Both 9/10 my U.S. History teacher and my Acadec/Chemistry teacher, who I've had for three years, were very happy to write my letters. I've spent a lot of time in their classes and connected with them well.
  • Counselor Rec: 8/10 I had a new counselor for this year, so she did not know me very well; however, she did everything she could to change this.

Why you think you were matched/not matched and general comments: I think I was matched because of my ambitions, my connection to Rice, and my work with the special needs community. I was surprised that I was match due to being at the “higher” end of QuestBridge finalists.

[] Essays: Biographical Essay: 6/10. This is because it covered too much of my life, rather than focusing on a recent event, a case study of my life, if you will. I did write a pretty good section about my view on the reservation and how I believe it’s my obligation to be a role model for those trapped in its vicious cycle of birth-alcoholism-babies (switch the last two if you want)-death.
Problem that keeps me up at night: 9/10. Not gonna lie, this essay was the bomb. I basically wrote about my experiences trying to determine the area or volume of a blob as my math abilities grew from 9th grade until the present, with my compounding knowledge adding new ways to approach the problem. Kinda cliche ending stopped it from being a 9.7/10 (I don’t believe in perfection)
[
] Teacher Recommendations: 9.78/10 from my chess coach and Literature teacher in 9th and 11th grade. I read a rough draft of it, and I don’t think I’ve ever deserved such praise.
9.25±.5/10 from my Calc BC teacher and chess coach, who liked me so much that he was my source of food while he worked at my school and gave me a bunch of his clothes before he moved away.
[li] Counselor Rec: 9±.5/10 because she was my teacher in 6th grade Latin for Babies, all the way up to AP Latin. My only worry is that because this is her first year as college counselor, she may not have had an idea of how to write the most persuasive letter. She wrote my letter first, which is always a plus.[/li][/ul]

[] Essays: Biographical essay deserved a 7/10 because I foolishly didn’t look at a case study from my life, instead opting to look at it holistically. I did have a nice section on my perceived role in yanking kids from the cyclic birth-> poverty->alcoholism->kids (switch these last three as you see fit)->death.
Problem that you want to solve essay deserved a solid 9.4/10 because I felt that it conveyed my intellectual vitality and problem solving through finding the area or volume of a blob, and how my methods evolved from 9th grade to the present as I learned more math, always returning to solve the blob problem. Kinda cliche ending stopped it from achieving 9.75/10 status
[

[ b]Why you think you were matched/not matched and general comments:**

I think that I wasn’t matched because my EFC is too high (my parents estimated their income wrong). I also think that my essays are a bit too radical and polarizing. I’m planning on using Commonapp so that I can work on that. I thought colleges like unique students.

@Waitwhatss, I just read your comment on here. I do hope you received help with your essays. If not, please try again. Don’t give up!

I have a quick question that I would love any perspective from. I’m not sure if this is the best place to post, but here goes: can I apply to NCM through Questbridge for colleges and also apply Early Action to other colleges that are NOT partnered with Questbridge? If so, how would that work? Has anyone done it? Thank you for any help!

@MangoLover11223 I think only if it’s non-restrictive because if you get matched you have to drop all of your other apps but I’m not sure. Check NCM website and videos; I’m sure they have answers to that.
