@CCTransferer USC will not look at your SAT or hs gpa as it becomes irrelevant when you reach that 30 transferable units threshold. Because you will have a lot of ap credits, that will be in your favor because you can start taking your major classes once at USC and not GE classes. Make sure you completed all or most of USC GE classes at your college. USC will focus on what college courses you’re taking. Hope this helps
@pomeranian4rich hopefully the majority of applicants get decisions by mid may-June, it seemed like everyone who was waiting until July was at a CCC, because that pool of applicants obviously takes longest to review, especially with most of them being SGRed. I wouldn’t be surprised if you got your decision as early as the end of April, because your now a junior applicant with the same GPA and additional GEs… but of course there will likely be plenty of people waiting until July again, I’m just hoping I’m not one of them since I live on the opposite side of the country lol
Hey guys, hopefully I’m in the right place, because I wanted you guys to take a gander at my chances for transferring to USC this Fall (2017)
I currently attend a CC in Washington state, I have a 4.0 GPA and am receiving my Associates this Winter Quarter (meaning I’ll have 90 credits), and outside of school I currently have a paid internship as a competitive analyst at a local mid sized tech company.
I am intending on either economics in Dornsife or transferring to the Marshall school of business.
What can I do right now to really make my application better, and do you guys know how much high school grades impact admission? I did not do too well in grades 9-12…
@uwtransferguy2017 wow impressive stats! Since you have over 30 credits USC won’t bother looking at your hs gpa, they still want it to make sure you actually graduated ha tho. To make your app even better, focus on your essay and loc. One or two SOLID letter of rec are enough. They rather see one impressive letter of rec than three sloppy letter of rec. the essay and letter of rec will tell admission your story and personality. Marshall business is relatively competitive than dornsife is for economics. You wont have any problem getting in because of your 4.0gpa, unless… you’re missing some major prerequisites like math, eng,(accounting and economics which are optional but recommended for further matriculation) and their 8 GE categories. Hope this helps!
Hey guys can you tell me how I stand as a Transfer for Marshall from a community college.
GPA: 3.58 USC transferable after Winter Semester
Completed all Prerequisites for my major: with As and Bs.
Extra Curricular Activities:
ASO 2 years (Student Body)
President/CO-Foudner of the Stock Club at my school.
I’ve also been managing my families portfolio and generated a return of 11% over 2 years.
Taken business and economics courses through Coursera.
I know my GPA is under average, this is particularly due to some personal stuff I was dealing with during my first two semesters of community college. I took 10 units over summer and got a 4.0 in those classes. I currently have a 4.0 in my fall classes as well, which includes calculus. Is there a way that I can have them take a look at my spring grades.
@Warrior106 I think you have a solid chance because of your EC. You can also mention about your personal stuff in your application so the admissions can understand your situation. They’ll likely ask for a SGR(spring grade request) if you’re a sophomore applicant and taking prereq for marshall like business calc and english, but since you have completed all your prerequisites, they won’t likely ask for a sgr unless you’re taking a bunch lot of GEs in spring. With a strong essay and perhaps one strong letter of rec. you shouldn’t worry too much!
@pomeranian4rich wow already! I applied there too, did you get the acceptance through email? Cause I have not gotten anything.
I was reading over my transfer plan again and it stated that two of the 8 core literacy courses must be completed at USC. After this semester I’ll have 7 done… so was I supposed to only do 6 ?
@Pantafootball highly doubt that’d be a problem, I think they’d probably just count the extra one as an elective. I might be in the same situation but I don’t think there’s any reason to worry about it!
@Pantafootball as long as you completed many then it won’t be a problem! Oh really, csuf? I received an email from them and the letter was dated 12/07/16. I havent received the actual letter but it’ll probably come next week.
Hey! Thought I might as well introduce myself here as well.
I’m $,
I am a sophomore at Los Angeles Trade Tech
I will (hopefully) be transferring with 52 units
My EC include: Executive Board member of a undocumented immigrants organization at USC, member of a guardian scholars program at USC, volunteered with USC Caruso church down at skid row, Schools on Wheels volunteer, volunteer work at orphanages in Mexico, (still looking for one more volunteer opportunity before I submit)
GPA: 3.4 (at the moment, will be higher after grades submit this fall) so possibly: 3.5-3.6
Also will be applying to Norman Topping Scholarship.
How’s everyone’s application going?
I’ve been drowning in 18 units so I haven’t started However one more week! Then off to writing.
Ugh, idk no matter how ready or good you feel to come here you still feel like something in you is saying why you? Maybe i’m playing too much into the USC front, but as a first generation college student you aren’t always going to feel like you belong really. However I do want to show that I belong here just as much as any person does, its just hard to convey that for this essay!!! aRG. I do have two questions though, how many will be submitting letters of rec? also, does anyone know how the hell to send HS transcripts???
@twostressed Hey there, I went to Trade Tech for my writing classes I think your ECs are quite interesting and should definitely help you out with the Topping Scholarship (and with USC too). I only really volunteered at my local Church in East Los Angeles, but the people that interviewed me for the scholarship seemed pretty underwhelmed by that, lol.
I wrote a very cheesy essay about wanting to find my “path” and also being a first generation college student. I don’t think they mind clichés as long as it comes off authentic. I didn’t submit any letters of recommendation, but I sure wanted to. My professors just forgot to send them in =\ You can just mail HS transcripts. I liked to mail stuff and upload it online.
@zettasyntax Oh hey! Thank you!! If I may ask, how did your interview go? Like was it pretty personable or kinda uptight, i’m a little nervous for that one but am glad that it’s due in March.
I’m always afraid of it sounding cheesy or like a sob story. However I really think its the way you convey it maybe you know? Idk I’m just trying to figure out how to make all three questions on the common app flow really. But yeah i’m having problems with that too in terms of letters of rec, I know its best to have them submit but who knows if they will & thank you!! I have another question too, idk who brought this up earlier but they said they will go by your ec’s if your gpa isn’t with average, is that true? Ugh i just hope i don’t get SGR. That would suck with housing. However I did hear the new Village might have rooms set out for transfers? Idk.
@twostressed My interview went terrible, haha. I did talk with one of the people that wound up interviewing me. She stepped out of a room and said she needed a little break and sat with me and a couple of other students in the front office, but maybe that was part of it as to relax the applicants and make them feel at ease? I’m not a very gifted speaker though, so that may have been another reason why I found the interview so difficult. It was just me and three others (the lady I had spoke with [I think she had the title of “director”], a student volunteer, and the president of foundation apparently).
Yeah, I don’t think anybody likes to hear sob stories because it may personally upset them or be like a trigger if it’s especially bad. I don’t think it’s bad to mention sad events, but it’s definitely not a good idea to focus too much on them. I have heard that they try to pay more attention to ECs when the applicant is borderline, but the whole process is really random at times too, so I couldn’t provide a definitive answer. Knowing USC, the new housing will be for freshmen and continuing students lol At least that likely/hopefully means transfers have a shot of getting housing in some of the older places.
@zettasyntax haha the new housing will be for freshmen/continuing students while we transfers get the old housings well it’s better than having none i guess!
@twostressed there are reasons why you might get a sgr. 1.you’re taking crucial major prerequisite 2. your gpa is on the low side and admission wants to see your grades before making a decision. In essence, the point of sgr is to provide them with more information regarding about your grades before making a final decision. I believe they’re trying to find reasons to admit applicants not reject them lol… and I was the one who brought up about the ec and the low gpa. Like I said, they’re trying to find reasons to admit you. if you have a low gpa but a stellar ec to make up for it, then it’ll make up for your poor gpa. But having a high gpa(3.7+) with stellar gpa is always better
@twostressed I’ll be sending in two letters of rec and the majority of people on here will be as well… get that 3.5-3.6 and I think you’d have a pretty decent shot whether it be fall or spring! Good luck!!!
Do you guys know if we’re allowed to take the required writing course during summer 2017?
@smileesarefree I asked the admission last year and they said no. They only look at your spring courses.
I have a couple questions as a sophomore transfer applicant.
-
I won’t have all of the “general ed. courses recommended for admission” finished but I will have Writing, minimum math, GE-A,GE-B,GE-C,GE-E,GE-F and GE-H completed. That leaves me with GE-G and GE-D incomplete. How does that stack up with you guys? The reason I don’t have those done is because I just decided to apply to USC not too long ago and the rest of the school I planned on applying did not require those courses.
-
How do you apply as undecided/undeclared? I keep reading that this is possible but I don’t see the option.
-
How does the Foreign Language requirement work? I took 4 years of Spanish in high school (Spanish 1, 2, 3, and AP Spanish Lang) how ever I only got a 3 on the AP Lang exam ):. Am I really supposed to still take a foreign language?
