@penntousc @pomeranian4rich You guys got me worried now… I’ve finished micro and macro Econ this semester and and will do calc next semester (which I assume would fulfill the math gen ed). The only gen eds I have are intro to linguistics, polisci, and will do biology and history next semester. I’m also finishing the writing requirement…
@USofAwesome the econs, at most, will count as electives… however, counting your calc course, you should have 5 GEs completed so you’ll likely be sent an SGR. Just make sure to keep your GPA up and try to get an A in calc and you’ll definitely have a shot.
@penntousc @pomeranian4rich so I just looked thru everything and found that I’ll have six GEs, all major prereqs finished and four GEs as well as foreign language requirement (I did score 800 on German SAT subject test if that counts for anything) remaining… if I could ask (and sorry to keep bothering you guys) how many GEs did you have last year when they didnt accept you? I just want to see where I stand
thank you so much
Hello all! I’m applying to USC as a Business Administration Major looking to study at the Marshall School of Business. I’m applying as a Fall 2017 transfer applicant however I have some concerns and I’d like hear some opinions from some of you more “experienced” transfer students or from past admitted transfer students on what I might need to do in order better my chances of being admitted.
I currently have a 3.31 gpa and am enrolled in 13 units. I’ve already received an A in my biology class already as it was an 8 week course and I expect to receive 2 more A’s and 1 B (possibly 3 A’s but probably not…)
Depending on how I do at the end of this 2016 fall semester, my gpa will either be a 3.5 or a 3.66.
Spring '17 I’ll be taking 17 units and I plan to get all A’s in the courses. If I do so, my new gpa will be either a 3.75 or a 3.83. Post spring semester, I’ll have completed all general ed requirements and all major prep requirements for USC.
In my opinion, as of the information listed above, I seem to be a qualified candidate… It’s what is listed below that worries me.
I have 2 W’s, one F (biology… though I re-took it and got an A) and 1 C (IN ECON! This scares me as it’s relevant to my major).
To add to my hesitation, because of these 2 W’s and 1 F that I received, I was always one or two units under a full time 12 unit student and I know how much USC values a “heavy full time course load.”
ALSO, Fall of 2015 I was essentially taking 1 class as that was the semester that I dropped my 5 unit math class (which I later re-took and got a B in) and the only other class I was taking was a 1 unit non transferable entrepreneur “elective” type course in which I received a B in. (I plan to discuss this matter in the additional information section as I was taking time to work and pursue career based activities.)
I am hoping that USC see’s that this Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 school year I successfully took a full course load and weighs their decision more heavily on that fact (13 units fall, and 17 units spring).
So, with all of that in mind… I’d like to hear back from any of you as to how you think that I stand as a potential applicant to USC. I’d also appreciate any tips as to what I may need to do perhaps on the essay portion of the application to better my chances of getting in.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, I know its a lengthy post!
@usctransferivc well you do have an upward trend which always good from when you first started. And may I ask if the F is included in your gpa? Or did you leave it off because even though you retook it. USC doesn’t exclude these grades of classes that have been retaken.
Yeah I suppose that the upward trend is a good thing. And yes, all gpa’s that I listed above included the F.
@USofAwesome I think I had two completed
Are attendance records looked over during admission? I’ve been super sick these past few weeks and I had to miss a lot of class, and I’m scared those absences are gonna affect my chances of admission. I don’t think we’re even going to be sending any records of our attendance but I just want to be sure.
@ashurikko I’ve never seen anyone speak of attendances before lol but admissions will assume your grades correlate with attendances. Heck I even doubt they will care or ask for your attendances. Grade>attendances
@pomeranian4rich That’s what I thought. I saw that they “consider trends in grades and college attendance patterns” so didn’t know if it mean’t individual classes. Thanks!
@ashurikko By college attendance patterns I think they mean full time/part time
@Twenmi Ahh okay, thanks for clearing that up!
@Twenmi @ashurikko duh! omg that makes sense. Yeah I heard usc loves full time students lol unless you’re a parent or independent and have to work to be financially stable.
Hi y’all, I have a concern applying as a TTP transfer. I’m applying as a freshman from a quarter-system university, my first quarter GPA is 3.6 (2 A’s, 1 A-, 1B), I plan to get all A’s on my 2nd quarter. I’m worried my GPA is too low and by the time my second quarter ends and final grades (that can raise my 1st quarter gpa) comes out, my transfer application and 1st quarter transcript will be sent already. (Meaning, they won’t even look at second quarter grades?). Does USC look at first quarter grades only? and is my GPA too low? I’m a freshman so I don’t have previous courses that can help my current gpa.
@kamtea since you’re on the TTP I wouldn’t worry much. As long as you mean the 3.6gpa threshold (I forgot the min. Gpa) you’ll get in definitely. Many ttp, if not all, got in last year despite dropping a class/failing a class and without having to submit a sgr. Low key jealous right now… lol. But don’t worry too much! I hope that made you feel better! And good luck! Also TTP applicants hear back first than do other applicants
Hello all! I don’t mean to clog up this forum with posts but I just wanted to see if anyone could answer my question on page 35 as it was only partially addressed. Thanks!
@usctransferivc which part(s) of the question did you want addressed?
I would love it if everything else that was not addressed could be addressed! Hahaha
- The 2 W's are going to undoubtedly have an impact on your chances, USC (as well as most top notch schools) really does not like W's. With that said, I'm pretty sure there were at least a few applicants last year that got accepted (might have been spring though) with a W(s).
- You mentioned that one of your W's was a math class. Considering you are applying to Marshall, that also will likely hurt your chances as well. I have a question for you -- was that math class Calculus? I'm sure you are already aware that if you don't have calculus completed (likely with a B or better) your application to the business school is almost a certain rejection (unless by math you did mean Calc).
- If your GPA is a 3.5-3.6 when you apply (wait for your fall semester grades to be finalized before applying), you should have an increased chance at receiving an SGR. Finishing with a 3.7 or higher will also improve your chances even more, as 3.7 is probably the desirable GPA for admission to USC.
- My honest opinion: I think if you finish with the grades that you're expecting to finish with, you have a decent shot at spring admission. I say this because of the 2 W's (one being math), and the C in Econ. I don't think that the F in Bio will really make a huge impact on your decision since it isn't relevant to your major, and you retook it and aced it. I saw students with similar circumstances last year (W's, F's, retakes, etc.) get accepted for Spring '17 because of the upward trends they were on, and you appear to be on that trend. USC is known to be fairly forgiving in the transfer admissions process, so you have that going for you. You could definitely end up being accepted for the fall since the GPA you finish with could be above a 3.7, but my guess would be to aim for spring.
Do not by any means take my opinion too seriously, because I’m obviously not a counselor and it really is difficult to chance people since I don’t think anyone truly knows exactly how these applications will be evaluated. I’m giving you my opinion based on what I saw happen in last years thread, and based on the research I’ve done for myself as an applicant. I wish the best of luck to you with your application, finish strong and you could end up with a spot!
Hey guys! Hate to stir up the whole ethnicity controversy but I’m half black and half Asian and I was wondering would it help my chances to only mark black? The application asks for parental information so I had to mark down that my mom is from the Philippines. I’m just worried that marking Asian will hurt my chances.
