***2017 National Merit Finalist Thread***

@Winky1 Ole Miss has pretty much a full ride scholarship as well and a fantastic honors college.

Thanks @crazy4info . Does anyone know if the other 3 schools I mentioned have solid honors colleges (University of Oklahoma, Alabama, and Kentucky)? My daughter will most likely be on a pre-health track so any info. about that would be helpful.

@Winky1 KY has great Honors. If you apply to KY early admissions, you’ll increase chance of admit to Honors.

@Winky1 You can find that information online but OK and Bama both have strong honors programs as well. Oklahoma has a dedicated NM staff and Bama offers a variety of research/scholar programs within the honors college.

Hi @Winky1! Enjoy this exciting journey you are on with your D. Our D accepted the NMF package to OU and is in the Honors College. It is a perfect fit for her! She will be particiapting in the OU Honors at Oxford program this summer https://ou.edu/content/honors/academics/oxford.html. One thing you also might want to look into at OU regarding your D’s interest in the health care field is OU’s Medical Humanities Scholars Program. I am not familiar with the details, but here is a link: http://www.ou.edu/honors/specialprograms/MedHumanitiesScholarship.html

Thank you @2sunny , @IABooks , and @Wlmom94!

UCF has medical honors program that guarantees admission to medical school with appropriate grades in undergrad and MCAT score - and it’s a full ride that includes honors for National Merit Finalists if you are accepted.

Did the 2017 NMFs get a certificate? I thought I’d read that they are sent to the HS, but our school says they don’t get them for finalists. (Which implies they DO get them for commended/SF? What?)

Yes, my daughter received hers at the school award ceremony last week - from NMSC

IIRC NMSC mentioned certificates for the finalists.

@stacey063 @JBStillFlying - thanks! School didn’t get them but didn’t think they were supposed to! Spoke with NMCorp and problem on its way to being solved.

College sponsored scholarships are now live on NMSC’s portal. Scholarship notification will be updated in waves depending on when students specified their first choice college. Good luck to all!

@JBStillFlying Thank you! I had been wondering if my daughter missed out on the extra scholarship due to not entering her Top choice until end of March, but she got notification of a small college sponsored one. yay!

@Momof2TX you mentioned that your D narrowed it down to OU and Alabama, and ultimately chose AL. Can you share why she chose one over another?

My D18 will be NMSF, interested - though not sure - in engineering, and we visited 2 schools with solid NMF packages - OU and TAMU. She loved OU and hated TAMU. I tried to encourage her to visit Alabama but she was adamant she is not going to school in AL and would not even consider campus visit. We are low income and with Pell grant OU would be almost full ride, so I don’t want to push too hard.

Thank you!

@Tallgrass - Nothing against Alabama but just wanted to say that my DD is currently a NMF at OU and is loving it! I’ve never seen her so happy in her entire life! She’s been given tremendous research opportunities as a freshman and will be spending this summer in Germany doing a paid internship and getting honors research credit for it:-) OU treats it’s NMF very well!

@tallgrass why did your D18 love OU and hate ATM? We Will be in a similar situation next year so looking for feedback

Wouldn’t OU be a little bit more than “solid” for NMF? It looks fairly gold plated to me.

@DavidPuddy The campus look and feel between these 2 schools is very different! There is nothing wrong with either, and personally I liked them both, for different reasons. But kids look at different things than us parents do, and sometimes we have completely different reaction to the same thing.

She primarily did not like how huge and impersonal the campus was, with wide roads and buses running through them. Also didn’t like how hot and humid (even in March) it already was. She was turned off from the very first moment, and only stayed for the rest of the day because we had meetings scheduled and didn’t want to just not show up.

OU felt very “personal” – didn’t feel big at all. It’s also very pretty, and the cafeteria was outstanding. Obviously, she liked all the attention she got from NMF office that went out of its way to arrange ALL meetings she was interested in. At the end of the day, she said I like it a lot, I can imagine myself going to school here.

Personally, I liked her decision. The thing that worried me most about TAMU NMF package is the 3.5 GPA requirement, which for an engineering major is not that easy to achieve. So if you drop below that, you – the parent – go from paying zero for tuition and fees to (as of today) $36K! That to me is a very risky proposition, so I was glad she eliminated that option for me.

@tallgrass Congrats on the confidence of your D being NMSF! D17’s class, being first year of redesigned PSAT, had it tough, waiting out the new cutoffs. We had initially visited Alabama due to the guaranteed OOS scholarships, which she qualified for even before NMSF. She fell in love with the beautiful campus and the new media center, which is where she will be spending a lot of her time, with a TV/film related major. The Honors College is also a draw. Alabama is a huge school with lots of opportunities, but feels much smaller than it is. 3.0 to maintain the scholarship takes some pressure off, too. I believe it’s 3.25 at OU.

We visited OU after finding out she was NMSF, and were very impressed with the people, and department. The dorms left a bit to be desired after seeing Alabama. I’m also pretty sure I got food poisoning after our cafeteria lunch! (Note: avoid the chicken gyro if you have to wait on the chicken to finish cooking!) OU is significantly smaller overall, and with only about 150 in her major, she decided the bigger school was a better fit. Alabama also will have a bit more diversity on campus. Over 50% of students come from OOS, with kids coming from all over the country. OU had a much smaller percentage of OOS, with the majority of those coming from TX. One of D’s roommates next year will be from Pennsylvania. Waiting to hear on other 2! She didn’t want to room with anyone from home!

I did like that OU’s scholarship covered summer terms. I would have preferred OU, only 2.5 hours away vs. a 10 hour drive to Alabama, but we let her decide. I think either would be a fantastic choice. She waited to decline her offer from OU until last week, in case she changed her mind. We never looked at Texas Tech, but recently received mail from them reminding us about their full ride for NMF. Lots of kids from DD’s school headed there, too. I would definitely recommend a visit to Alabama if possible, scheduling through the Honors College for a personalized visit. I had to drag my daughter there, and she’s glad I did! Good luck as you start the process!

where do you find the list of college sponsored scholarships?
