***2017 National Merit Finalist Thread***

@flatKansas we did too and my daughter’s scholarship appeared on her portal on May 1. However, they told me there may be a few more trickling out for those who specified later on.

As all scholarship recipients have pretty much been decided at this point, anyone with a question should call NMSC to determine your status.

Just had my daughter log into the portal, and it doesn’t say anything new. Just that she submitted her portion of the application. I wonder if that means she didn’t win, or are they going to announce another wave?

Just received the “Unfortunately, you have not been selected for one of these awards” letter.

The point raised by @JBStillFlying in post #544 is one for NMF 2018 families to keep in mind. My son’s friend is one of the kids who will be receiving $8K less at UChicago.

My son only applied to one school that provided NMF scholarship money so, while I was happy for him to have been recognized as a NMSF, I wasn’t factoring in getting any NMF merit $ to offset the cost of tuition. When decisions came out I for this school, I anticipated he would receive a NMF scholarship. He was awarded a presidential scholarship and we were thrilled. As I read posts about other’s decisions, there were individuals who anticipated receiving the NMF scholarship $20K/ yr that had no scholarship notification. They were very disappointed and we all thought any NMF accepted would get the $20K/yr. What seems to have happened is there were changes to what was being offered. Initially it read as any NMF admitted was guaranteed a $20K/yr scholarship. When decisions were released and it didn’t turn out that way, everyone started checking the site again and realized the wording changed on the website to say any NMF admitted would be eligible to compete for a NM scholarship. This caught some families off guard.

Does anyone know if there’s a way to check if the college has received the money?

@theglowingdragon If you’re saying you (or your student?) hasn’t had their scholarship paid out yet, we’re in the same boat. You can always call your school and ask them.

My D’s NMSC scholarship was included in her FA package on her student portal. Then when the bill generated, a pro-rata amount was netted against the payment due.

Addendum to above: she also had to “accept” her financial aid (including merit scholarships) in order for them to apply. There was a box to click by each item and then you hit the “Accept” button. That’s pretty standard, based on our experience.

Was it in the mail?

No news yet in the Greater Boston area. Anyone else in Massachusetts hear yet?

@marycave and @SMLDAL, this thread is from last year.

ETA: here is this year’s thread. http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/national-merit-scholarships/2008875-2018-national-merit-finalist-thread-p48.html

My son received his National Merit Scholarship renewal letter in the mail (home address) earlier this week. There is a deadline of March 21 so be on the lookout for the letter if your student has a National Merit scholarship.

Yep - D17 received hers and it’s been renewed. Kind of early - she doesn’t even have grades from Winter Quarter (finals next week). And then there’s Spring Quarter - we just did a best guess. She’s not planning on getting any D’s or F’s LOL.
