2017 Waitlist Discussion/Results Thread

@lalola

OMG

Tell us please about your financial need and scores and bla bla
a nd how did you hear about the decision? Virtual BM or email? or call

@lalola - And who your admissions officer/counselor was, hehehe! :p

Why is it so hard to write stats and financial need? And just log in ONCE, just ONCE after you’re accepted.

Hey! I’m sorry for not responding until now.

First of all, I am an international student (I’m from Germany). I got an email first from the Director of Admissions notifying me about the descision and the day after I could see the descision and financial aid on virtual Bryn Mawr.

I didn’t send in any information after I was waitlisted, but I received several emails asking if I was still interested in BMC and ofcourse I said yes.

I went to a boarding school in the US the last two years and did the International Baccalaureate Diploma so I will only find out about my actual grades in about one month.

My SAT scores were pretty good for an international student:
CR: 720
WR:680
M: 640

I was really surprised about the Financial Aid! It’s practically a full ride, which strongly influenced my decision to accept the offer.

I led a community service childrens chorus in the town where my boarding school was, I was involved with activism (social justice + environmental), MUN, homeless shelter…
community service was mandatory from my boarding school…

Let me know if you guys have any other questions!

Oh. Bryn Mawr also came to visit my boarding school (I think in November) and I had an interview which I felt went very well.

The woman who I was communicating with the last couple of weeks about my interest of attending Bryn Mawr is Senior Assistant Director of Admissions, Sheila Gillin.

Good Luck Girls! xxx

Wow your reading score is amazing. I’ve got 650 M, 690 W as well quite the same right? But my CR is 590 blah.

Well I emailed my regional counselor today. Waiting for what she has to say.

Have a great time at BMC in Fall :)

Hello,
I was waitlisted as well by Bryn Mawr this spring, and I just recently discovered this thread.
@ Bluecholeric, is it possible for you to post what your regional counselor reply to you? Thanks!
@ lalola, congrats!

I am an international student as well and am actually quite surprised that I was waitlisted.
I’ve studied in the US for the last six years and my high school is the number 1 school in the state.
My ACT score is 32 but if you superscore it, it is 33 (not much different).
I have eight APs, all 4s and 5s.
and my gpa is 3.88 out of 4.
I’ve done a research project and received an the research report badge from 2013 intel science talent search.
I’m guessing the reason is probably because I need a lot of aid, like full ride… and I’m also east asian… (-2)
Bryn Mawr is my first choice college, and I’m still very disappointed… :’(
Let’s hope that we will get off the waitlist together :)

Did anyone receive any emails or information from admissions lately?

:( Everyone got the official closure email?

Well then, see you in next years transfer thread.

@Bluecholeric Aww! Just keep working hard and everything will naturally fall into place! By the way what did the closure email say? Could you copy and paste it? Thanks!

@letshope2013

Thank you :slight_smile:
Oh and it probably wasn’t the closure email just my personal rejection I suppose.

Dear Chloe,

Thanks very much for your strong interest in Bryn Mawr College. At this time, I want to let you know that unfortunately we will not be able to admit you from our wait list. Thank you very much for your patience with this process.

We are most grateful for your continued interest in Bryn Mawr and wish you all the best as you enter college this fall.

Best,

My goodness! I forget to check this thread for a couple of days, and it spontaneously explodes with new posts! :D

Congrats again, lalola!! Great to see that Bryn Mawr is truly accepting waitlists based on their fit with the school and Class of 2017, not on financial need. :slight_smile: As an aside, Heidi Klum is now on the judging panel for America’s Got Talent—Germany should’ve booked her!

@Chloe - Don’t give up yet! You’ve wanted this for years, so definitely appeal their decision. As you’ve nothing to lose, be as sincere and persistent as possible. Best of luck!!

@Hope - Hmmm, sounds like your e-mail was different from Chloe’s. Did you happen to receive this message, by chance?

"Dear [Name],

I hope this message finds you well. I very much appreciate your patience while remaining on our wait list. I am writing to let you know that although we do not know yet how many, we do anticipate having a few openings in the Class of 2017 between now and the end of June. If you would like to remain under consideration for a space in the Class of 2017, please do let us know by responding to admissions@brynmawr.edu.

Best,
Peaches Valdes
Director of Admissions"

If so, let’s hope (hehehe, get it? ;)) we’ll both be admitted!

On another subject (and this is to everyone), how are you going to celebrate Father’s Day? We’re taking my grandpa out to a buffet! It’s gonna be extremely crowded, that’s for sure. :p

@FirstMSur

Thanks but I doubt appeal would help.
I just received my ACT scores it’s 33. Versus my poor 1930 on SATs.
I didn’t even know about ACT since like two months ago and just randomly took it, turns out I’m so much better at ACT.

I will try to re apply ED I next year while at college.

They don’t give transfers financial aid :(

@Chloe - That’s exactly why you should appeal! Show your improvement by sending in that 33 ACT score and your final grades, then write an additional, heartfelt letter! :slight_smile:

Are you sure they’ll let you reapply as a prospective freshman next year? Won’t they know about you studying at another university??

@FirstMSur

I will probably do that :slight_smile: Thank you.

Idk honestly. If I won’t ask for credit transfer and send in only high school transcript along with high school teacher recommendations and apply ED I which is by November 15 - which means I won’t even have finished a semester at college by then, why not?

They don’t offer fin aid to international transfers and BMC is my dream!

Gap year option is like doing nothing expect translating emails at my dad’s firm and it doesn’t sound appealing.

College in Lithuania is my chance to visit Paris and London and get some real college experience and solid background.

@Chloe - But you’ll have to explain your “gap year” anyway—they’ll assume you took one since you’re reapplying as a freshman. :wink: You could write about your experiences in Klaipeda, Paris, and London, but you’d have to omit everything about university and still make your travels sound meaningful (as in, you went abroad with a purpose unrelated to college). Volunteer for a cause you’re passionate about, or apply to some internships in those areas! That way, you can focus on LCC and still have reasons/activities to explain when BMC asks why you decided to “wait” another year instead of transferring from another school.

Actually, the more I reflect on it, the more wretched I feel for ever encouraging this train of thought. At the end of the day, it’d still be dishonest, so please reconsider working for your father instead. Reapply with a clear conscience as a true prospective freshman while gaining professional experience, network connections, and money. After all, it’s redundant to want a solid college experience before actually going off to college!

If you reapply as a freshman from LCC, you’ll basically be emulating the Turkish girl you previously wrote about. As you said, she pompously “settled” for BMC, which frustrated girls like us on the waiting list. Similarly, you’re technically hogging (for lack of a better word) the spot of a waitlisted student at LCC by choosing to attend the school for only one year and then deceiving BMC by reapplying as a new freshman. I understand the financial burden of international transfers, but if you’re not planning to let Admissions know about LCC and you’re not seriously committed to the university, why would you want to crush someone else’s dream of enrolling there?

If your appeal doesn’t work (and I really hope it does, so we can triumph together!), I’d suggest you devote the next half-year to strengthening your application. We all know that Bryn Mawr is an exceptional school, so I don’t think you’d truly feel accomplished if you were to gain admission by breaching your own integrity and the college’s trust in you. I know I definitely wouldn’t.

I do sincerely apologize if you found anything I said to be harsh, but I really had to get this out. I don’t want you (or anyone else, for that matter) to act upon a desperate, rash idea you’ll eventually come to regret, because once history is written, it becomes extremely hard to erase, especially with the capabilities of modern technology. The consequences won’t be worth it in the long run, so be honest and fair and stay true to your values.

Best of luck with everything! :)

Hey it’s okay :slight_smile:
I got full funding for the University of Iowa from the Ministry today. And I am definitely going :slight_smile:
So I might like it there

Good luck :)

And LCC is not selective. It admits like 90% of applicants and it doesn’t even require SATs.
So it’s pretty easy to get in.

You weren’t harsh you were realistic. And I sincerely wish you all the best !

@Chloe - Congratulations on Iowa!! :D

Thanks! :slight_smile: Let us know how your appeal goes, and don’t hesitate to holler if I can ever be of any help! :)

Thank you :slight_smile:

Actually I changed my mind about the appeal thing. Bryn Mawr still remains an option for me. I’m going to UIowa and that means I’m eligible for transfer financial aid. I’d be ineligible if I went to Lithuania. Appeal would be kind of rude and too straightforward.

I will work 15 hours a week on campus, maintain a high GPA and I hope it’ll be 3.8+, go to Milwaukee on winter break and work there at my aunts friends place and come visit for campus visit and interview in spring.

I really do hope that you get in and we may as well meet up on BMC campus when I’m there for an interview :)
