***2018 National Merit Finalist Thread****

I was just awarded $2500/yr corporate NM scholarship!

@ski_racer congrats! Is this related to your parent’s employer?

@LOUKYDAD yes, my mama. Her startup was conveniently acquired by the sponsoring company last year

Congratulations! Those were just mailed out yesterday – you must be nearby.

@iahomeschoolmom I actually just happened to check the online application thing-- it was posted there. (I’m in Idaho so mail usually takes forever bc it needs to go through Salt Lake first and I thought I’d check)

Oooo - I wonder if the NMSC scholarships that mail out on March 22 might be posted the same way then? That would be good, that way we aren’t waiting and wondering for so long.

@ski_racer Where were you able to see it? On the first page after you log in? Was it in a banner or something across the top? We just want to be sure we’re watching the right place. Thanks!

I called NMC to see where you would find the award on the site. The very helpful young lady said that if you are in the student’s portal (not the one for parents), when you log in you will see the page that has the three steps, the last being “maintain your personal information…” She said if the student received an award, there will be an offer letter on that page at the bottom.

EDIT: I did not ask whether all of those awards are out, so I don’t know if it means you won’t receive one if there isn’t one there today.

@iahomeschoolmom what @suzy100 said. It’s at the very bottom after you log on

I was assuming that if parents don’t work at sponsoring employer, chances of corporate sponsored award are nil. Anyone know if that is a good assumption?

Yes @LOUKYDAD I don’t think there is any point for me to get excited at this point!

@LOUKYDAD Yeah there’s probably not much of a chance, especially since I had to fill out a separate application for the award.

I wish I worked at a sponsoring company. :-?? That would be so nice! Unfortunately the big NMF colleges were all just too far away for my D (not the right fit) but boy is it tough declining those life-changing scholarships. (Sigh) Congratulations to the NMF who can take/are taking advantage of the fantastic opportunity! =D>

Edited to add: I think we are literally in mourning over UCF. D is very excited to attend a college closer to home (a plane ride was just too much of a hurdle for her and for us too), but we had such wonderful visits to UCF and, well, the football, the Towers, the HC, the palm trees, etc. :frowning: If UCF was a few hours closer, it would be a done deal.

Is anyone else mourning the “what if” schools (whether NMF or otherwise)? I may ask that on the Parents of 2018 page too.

@Kayak24 I certainly am mourning some of the “what if” schools! They didn’t work for dd for different reasons, but some of those offers are amazing!

Son received corporate NM scholarship!

@Twicer Congratulations!!

How did he find that out?

Bummer. Looks like if corporate scholarships are out that S18 didn’t get the one for his dad’s company. The folks at NMSC made it sound like he was a lock when my husband called in December to make sure they had everything and he was being considered for that one.

That’s a big disappointment.

I have a son is going to UTD as NMSC , I was just wonder is that’s cover for everything?

UTD covers just about everything for their National Merit program give or take a few hundred dollars - it depends on how much is spent on books (new, used, rented?) and after freshmen year how much they choose to spend on housing (single, double, quad, on or off campus?) You still need to pay for transportation, health insurance and a parking pass if the student brings a car on campus, but everything else is covered. The are a few small initial expenses $100 housing fee, $40 math testing fee and $75 orientation but that’s trivial. Also because the scholarship covers room and board that part of the scholarship is taxable unearned income.
